American College of Pediatricians releases position statement that “Gender Ideology Harms Children”

The socially conservative American College of Pediatricians released a position statement this past week that would appear to give ammunition to conservatives in the South Dakota Legislature who had proposed and supported House Bill 1008, otherwise known as the “transgender bathroom bill,” which was ultimately vetoed by Governor Dennis Daugaard after passage by the legislature.

As noted in the position paper…

acp

2. No one is born with a gender. Everyone is born with a biological sex. Gender (an awareness and sense of oneself as male or female) is a sociological and psychological concept; not an objective biological one. No one is born with an awareness of themselves as male or female; this awareness develops over time and, like all developmental processes, may be derailed by a child’s subjective perceptions, relationships, and adverse experiences from infancy forward. People who identify as “feeling like the opposite sex” or “somewhere in between” do not comprise a third sex. They remain biological men or biological women.2,3,4

3. A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking. When an otherwise healthy biological boy believes he is a girl, or an otherwise healthy biological girl believes she is a boy, an objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body, and it should be treated as such. These children suffer from gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria (GD), formerly listed as Gender Identity Disorder (GID), is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V).5 The psychodynamic and social learning theories of GD/GID have never been disproved.2,4,5

and…

5. According to the DSM-V, as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.5

Read the position statement here.

Do you agree or disagree with the position paper?  Coming from a group of pediatricians, does it have merit?

And If this information had been widely available before session, would it have made a difference in the final vote, as well as the Governor’s response to the measure?

  1. It would be very difficult to argue against their position. My instincts are to agree, but that is probably because my instincts were pretty much stated by ACP. Is there another organization? And does that organization have a position? I would be interested in hearing what they have to say if there is a different organization.

  2. Flying flags of a different color have become the politically correct uncorrected activity because of a lack of Huevo’s of the Common Cored American Public. This one certain flag flying will awaken the silent majority. I guarantee it.

  3. Only fools consider facts matters of opinion. Men are men, women are women; those who think they’re something else/in between/opposite they’re biology are confused/dishonest.

  4. Because living a miserable life where you hate your body is healthier than having gender reassignment surgery……..?

    1. A male or female surgically altered to be a female or a male is not a transformed male or female, it is a butchered male or female.

  5. “The socially conservative American College of Pediatricians “?– That is being polite to a group of right-wing wackos…..

  6. The information from the ACP would not have made a difference. The physiological and anatomical facts reiterated by the organization were never in question. The issue was entirely political.
The bill was based on the belief that:

No child should be forced by the government into an intimate setting – like a restroom or locker room – with another child of the opposite birth sex.

Protecting the privacy rights of students is of utmost importance in order to foster a safe and ordered learning environment.

Parents have a reasonable interest and expectation that schools will not implement a policy that allows their children to be viewed in various stages of undress by a member of the opposite biological sex.

I thought it was a simple, common sense and straight-forward bill. Unfortunately our efforts fell a little short. We’ll try again next year.

    1. — I thought it was a simple, common sense and straight-forward bill.

It was and is a good bill.

Don’t expect hate groups and zealots from the LGBTQAAA community to care much about common sense or science.

      THAT’s the real problem.

  7. So I looked it up: The American College of Pediatricians has about 60 members. The American Academy of Pediatrics has 62,000 members.

    1. So does AAP recognize GD/GID as a disorder? Apparently the American Psychiatric Association does. Are they a right wing group too?

      1. ” Apparently the American Psychiatric Association does.”?– “apparently”?— They either do or don’t. You either know or you don’t. Perhaps you should know before you post?

        1. Yes, apparently. I am going by what another organization has said. I have no reason to doubt what they say, but since I have not read it for myself, there is a possibility the position that the ACP does not accurately represent what the American Psychiatric Association has stated. So it is apparent to me, but not sure. So instead of answering the question, you pick on one little word.

  8. Someday I expect that gender dysphoria will be considered a form of Cotard Syndrome, which is the “delirium of negation.”
In its most severe form, the sufferer believes he is dead. Other sufferers believe they are immortal. In between, people believe they are missing body parts or are convinced they have a disease (hypochondria.) In all cases the afflicted person believes something about himself that is not true.

If a patient presents with a complaint that he is missing his heart or has two brains, the doctor would immediately diagnose him as mentally ill and treat him for it. When the patient says he or she has incorrect or missing genitalia, the doctor is supposed to agree with the delusion.
For now, that’s where we are.

  9. I’m going to lunch today with six friends. We are all college grads. We are going to form a think tank, call Gordon Howie and start issue position papers. We will call ourselves the Eagles forum or perhaps the morals majority.

    1. “I’m going to lunch today with six friend……We will call ourselves the Eagles forum or perhaps the morals majority.”

      Good for you 6!

Then you can debate the 6 LGBTAQUAA folks who claim to speak for all LGBTAQUAA folks in SD.

  10. The actual pediatrician specialty society is the American Society of Pediatrics. The American Academy of Pediatricians is not a thing.

    1. Correcting my statement above. The actual pediatrician specialty society is the American Academy of Pediatrics or AAP. The American College of Pediatricians is not a thing. See — this is their goal – to confuse people!

  11. LOL – you do know that the American College of Pediatricians is classified as a hate group by the SPLC, right? ACP is not the scientific hook to hang your labcoat on.

    1. — is classified as a hate group by the SPLC

So, that’s a GOOD reason to listen to the ACP, right?

        1. Ask the LGBTAQUAA zealots–they know how to intimidate unbelievers into kowtowing to their hate-filled agenda.

          1. I’m asking YOU. You’re the one with a problem with the SPLC. That pointy white hood on your head is just to cover your dunce cap, right?

            1. A lotta of informed people have problems with the SPLC, including the FRC. You seem to have a problem with the FRC so take it up with them.

Really, who gave a license to the SPLC to label groups as “hate”? NO ONE!

And, as the leader of the SD Poverty Law Center, I hereby label crossgrain as a racist, sexist, homophobe, and a hater.

I know that you won’t have any problem with the SDPLC labelling you as such.

            2. –That pointy white hood on your head is just to cover your dunce cap, right?

I’m not trying to fill the closets now empty of gays with folks I disagree with–as LGBTAQUA zealots are.

              Take it up with them.

    2. The Family Research Council has labelled the SPLC as a “hate group”.

Lotta hating goin’ on out thair…
