And more Rick Weiland awfulness. Where are the donors?

As I do battle with a bout of insomnia, I turned to something surely guaranteed to put me to sleep – Rick Weiland. But what I actually came up with was a glimpse into the dismal situation that comprises Weiland’s campaign finances.

And I invite you to join me in checking out the awfulness, as the FEC finally has some hard data up.

What did I find? Out of his contributions, only 1/3 are from South Dakota. Individually, only 35 South Dakotans invested a total of $23,759 into his candidacy.  And there are so, so many big name Democrats who are still hedging their bets.

Who from South Dakota gave?

Why, I don’t see anyone currently in elected office in there, and barely anyone who had been an elected official, except for Linda Lea Viken & Scott Heidepreim. There is a tremendous hue and cry of no confidence in and of itself.

And PAC donations? Not much better.

COMMON GROUND PAC ALEXANDRIA VA 22301 6/24/2013 $1,000.00

TO ORGANIZE A MAJORITY PAC (TOMPAC) DES MOINES IA 50303 6/30/2013 $1,000.00

Out of $23,500, Weiland received over half from Tim Johnson for ‘taking one for the team’ (I wonder if that was written in the check memos?) But otherwise, donations were few and far between.  No wonder he had to loan himself 100k!

But, it’s not as if he’s spending much either. Check this out in terms of where his campaign dollars are going:

Payee Name Purpose Amount
ACTBLUE TECHNICAL SERVICE TRANSACTION FEE $7.00
ACTBLUE TECHNICAL SERVICE TRANSACTION FEE $0.00
ACTBLUE TECHNICAL SERVICE TRANSACTION FEE $126.00
ACTBLUE TECHNICAL SERVICE TRANSACTION FEE $11.00
ACTBLUE TECHNICAL SERVICE TRANSACTION FEE $266.00
ACTBLUE TECHNICAL SERVICE TRANSACTION FEE $55.00
ACTBLUE TECHNICAL SERVICE TRANSACTION FEE $323.00
MC COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTANT $2,120.00
NISTLER, ZACHARY STAFF SALARY $1,216.00
PANTHER GRAPHICS DASCHLE MAILING $1,195.00
US POSTAL SERVICE POSTAGE FOR MAILING $583.00

MC Communications is former Daschle staffer Michael Cole, doing business out of Sioux Falls. Zachary Nistler is (or was) state director for the Obama “Organizing for America” office in Sioux Falls.

What grabbed my attention here relates back directly to the previous South Dakota donations. Note the line item for Panther Graphics – “Daschle Mailing.”  They appear to have done a mailing in conjunction with Weiland’s old boss, DC Resident Tom Daschle.

And based on the response, it appears that only a few of the old guard answered the clarion call of Tom Daschle on behalf of Weiland. Only 35 South Dakota donors stepped up to the plate for Weiland when called upon to do so.

Compare that to a reported 1400 for Senate Candidate Mike Rounds.

If you’ll recall, back in May, after Daschle got his fingers in the pie, and pushed out any chances of Democrats being competitive, DSCC sources told Politico “This is [Daschle’s] race. If he wants to encourage someone to get in, if he wants to endorse someone to get in, he should be prepared to raise all the money necessary to support them.”

And if what happens when Tom Daschle get involved is that only 35 South Dakotans care to listen, it’s going to be a long, bleak campaign for Rick Weiland.

  • bill thompsom was an elected official too, and reknown beer maker

  • You’re right. That still only makes 3.

  • I wonder if he is going to try a grassroots/internet campigan?

Just checked his site. Nope. Maybe the donors can ask for a refund.

  • Right now Weiland has no competition to need to spend his money on. Mike Rounds may raise nine million dollars, but he is going to need to spend a lot of that money fighting off Rhoden and Nelson. He is also going to need to spend a lot of money to turn the campaign to a slightly more moderate bent to the regular election.
While Rounds deals with his competitor and spends money like he is still governor, Weiland shows good fiscal policy by building his war chest for the time he has an actual candidate. I also think at that time, you will see a lot more national parties getting interested, especially if the GOP primary gets nasty and exposes some weaknesses. Weiland has taken a page out of Santorum’s run in Iowa and is meeting all sorts of real people and not those just dedicated to the party.

  • With the general election more than a year away, this is nothing more than blatant spin.

  • Kinda early don’t ya think?

  • A few cool things to note about Rick Weiland’s FEC report:

    1.) A single donor submitted a $9.00 amount.
2.) Why hasn’t the campaign listed its expenses for pieces of pie?
3.) Is Weiland paying himself a salary as he campaigns?
4.) How much did he spend on the cards he hands out at his pie parties listing his proposed constitutional amendment?
