SDGOP Calls out Tim Johnson on breaking his vow for the sake of nepotism
From KELOland tonight, the South Dakota GOP calls out Tim Johnson for breaking his vow to not be involved in the US Atty process:
When 34-year-old Brendan Johnson applied for the U.S. Attorney’s position, he made it clear to KELOLAND News, his father, who is the ranking senior senator in South Dakota, would stay out of the process. But last week when Brendan Johnson’s nomination was delayed, Senator Johnson contacted Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy to find out why.
South Dakota Republicans feel Johnson broke a promise.
“The reality here is Senator Johnson made a commitment earlier this year to steer clear of being involved in the appointment of Brendan Johnson, clearly the Republican Party feels the decision should be based on merits and qualifications, not what your last name is or who you know,” executive director of South Dakota’s Republican Party Lucas Lentsch said.

Why can’t the newspeople simply say: “Johnson Lied.” He did. He said he would stay out of his son’s coronation. He didn’t. He called the Judiciary Committee to intervene. He lied.
How many Rounds are employed by the State, and how did Hunter Roberts get a job…..hhmmmm….they all must have earned them.
I have to give you a hand PP!!! You really lined everything up for me on this!!! All I had to do was click and this story was a great read all day!!! It just keeps on giving!!!
By the way the DNC has turned Tim Johnson into a disgrace!!! I don’t believe that the Tim Johnson before the health problems was the same as this one.
I need to agree with pickles first point. i have not watched a more entertaining story unfold. it certainly has been a very interesting read. The most entertaining aspect by far though has been on how no matter what the story was saying at the time, you twisted it up in your own imagination to mean what you exactly wanted it to say. Even here where the article you are directly citing, you leave out key parts that would definetly help clear the question up of how much of this Senator Johnson was sticking his nose in. Also in the article,
“Senator Johnson is only doing his job on behalf of the people of the state to make sure all of these nominees are getting through and being filled and has made inquiries on other positions that remain unfilled just as the U.S. Marshals are being filled in”
“It turns out Brendan Johnson wasn’t the only South Dakotan who applied to be the state’s next U.S. attorney. Beadle County States attorney Michael Moore also applied. Moore says he thinks it was a fair process.”
So Johnson wasn’t checking up solely on his son’s campaign for attorney, he was checking up on the status of the appointments. Also interestingly enough, his direct competitor says he felt it was handled fairly. Now if there was severe corruption in this appointment, don’t you think it should be Michael Moore waving his red flags waaaay before you. The truth of the matter is no matter what the circumstance, Johnson earned his position. We can always rely on you to make assumptions and pass them as fact. I’m really curious to see what else will unfold in this story, but I have yet to see on any of the posts you’ve made Johnsons direct influence on the appointment. From what I can see, he was overseeing what he would have been whether or not his son was being considered, and that he was chosen fairly. If making assumptions makes you feel better, go for it, but realize your leaps of logic usually don’t fall so neatly into place.
Hey Carmen- the problem with your logic is that Michael Moore is WAY more experienced than Brendan. So much for merit and qualifications. If Brendan’s dad wasn’t a Senator, Michael…or someone else would have gotten the job. And of course Michael isn’t going to cry foul on a fellow democrat.
Carmen is right on the money. I think PP and these other guys are still angry and bitter that their party picked such a huge loser to run against Senator Johnson last year. Dykstra didn’t have a chance and they’re all still upset about the election. So they’re scrapping the bottom of the barrel for any lame way to attack Sen. Johnson. This whole thing isn’t about Brandon at all, it’s all about their bitter, childish attacks.
Sorry. Its all about Senator Johnson naming his son to the job, and lying to South Dakotans once again.
You Rounds bashers never cease to amaze me. There is one (2 at most) more Rounds family member working for state government post 2002 than prior to 2002 yet you have been attacking Rounds for seven years on nepotism. Now that your guy is guilty as sin your try to justify it by claiming Rounds did it too. Give me a break.
John, it would not have mattered who the Reps ran against Johnson last year. It was not a fair election – no debates, no open meetings, no Q&A’s of Johnson other than a few scripted meetings. And any criticism of anything relating to Johnson elicited an immediate response of “unfair,” “not nice,” “remember he’s been ill,” “trust me, he can do the job,” “he’s a nice guy, how dare you criticize him,” yadayadayada from his campaign staff. The Pope couldn’t have won against Johnson last year. And now we have what we have.
10:34 — I never have understood how when you point fingers back and forth, your side automatically comes out on top. The Rounds did it, but we’re supposed to turn our heads in that case while you sit here and point fingers of the corruption on our side. If you want to call us hypocrites, go for it, but have the maturity to admit you’re just as guilty.
grudznick: Hunter Roberts is your Energy Policy Director in SD State Government. I am not sure what that means aside of a cubicle in the SD Economic Development building and a steady paycheck with benefits but hey, it’s a title for a new kid out of college!
