From the Argus leader, we find out that US Senator John Thune has some serious money in the bank, and for Congresswoman Herseth Sandlin, this cycle marks her lowest point yet at this time for fundraising:

Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin has raised slightly more than $315,000 since winning re-election in 2008, the smallest amount at this point in an election cycle for Herseth Sandlin since she won office in 2004.

Sen. John Thune, meanwhile, reported having more than $5.5 million on hand after raising more than $6.6 million in the five years since winning his seat in 2004.

and…

Herseth Sandlin’s campaign reported $226,582 cash on hand at the end of the third quarter. At the same point before her most recent election – October 2007 – the campaign had $500,219 on hand and had raised $150,000 more than in the current cycle, federal records show.

At this point in 2005, Herseth Sandlin had raised $683,337 – more than double the amount in this cycle.

and…

Justin Brasell, Thune’s campaign manager, said Thune’s successful fundraising is indicative of the strong support he has in the state.

“We are prepared for a competitive election and look forward to discussing John’s work for South Dakota with voters and once again earning their confidence and support,” Brasell said.

The least amount of money, and the toughest competition she’s ever had in the race. Plus, massive unrest with the liberal democrats in Washington.

This could be the time for a perfect storm against Herseth.

Thune raised $6.6 million in 6 years…

$1.2 million of which came from the insurance & pharmaceutical lobbies in the past 6 months.

Peel the onion; most of Thune’s money, like that of any national politician from South Dakota, comes from out of state.

It appears many maybe waiting for a democrat to run for US House. Since Herseth cornered the republican “just-say-no” on the big five issues. http://dakotaday.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=102:congresswoman-sandlinbeware-the-roar-of-butterfly-wings-&catid=2:the-edge-catigory-1

Who can raise more money? Curd or Nelson?

I don’t think that is the main issue but it is important in the general.

Where do you find your numbers Tommy Paine?

According to Open Secrets, you’re pretty far off the mark. As a matter of fact, the category “Retired” tops the list with $590,720. I imagine many of those retired folks live in South Dakota.

Of course, out of state donors ARE a factor in any race for a national seat, but his ratio of In-State vs Out-of-State looks pretty good, too.
