Governor Appoints Kristin Conzet to Legislature

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds has appointed Kristin Conzet, Rapid City, as a District 32 Republican member of the South Dakota House of Representatives.

Mrs. Conzet succeeds Rep. Brian Dreyer, who resigned from the Legislature because of his pending deployment to Afghanistan with the South Dakota National Guard. Dreyer is scheduled to begin active duty next spring as a member of the 196th Mobile Enhancement Brigade.

“I’m pleased that Kristin Conzet has agreed to fill the vacancy in the South Dakota House of Representatives on such short notice,” Gov. Rounds said Wednesday. “I’ve known her for well over 20 years, and I believe she will be a great addition to the state Legislature.”

Mrs. Conzet, a Fort Pierre native, owns Conzet Consulting, which provides grant and technical writing, along with fund-raising services. She is a University of South Dakota graduate, with degrees in English and Mass Communications.

“Having been raised in the area, I am very much aware of the significant role of the Legislature, as well as the dedication of state workers,” Mrs. Conzet said. “I look forward to representing my district.”

Mrs. Conzet is married to Steven Conzet, vice president of business banking for Wells Fargo in Rapid City. The couple have one daughter, Katherine, 7.

I didn’t put two and two together until I went looking for a picture, but I actually know her from college. Kristin’s maiden name is Fischer, and she’s the daughter of Karl and Eileen Fischer of Ft. Pierre.  Kris is an extremely nice gal, and I’m sure she’ll do well. Congratulations from the SDWC.

We were just talking about how there aren’t enough women legislators! Good to see! I don’t know anything about her though as conservative or moderate.

Is that maiden name Fischer as in Century 21 Fischer-Rounds?

Good to see a young kid come up through the ranks.

Anon:

Yes it is. I don’t know if your comment is intended to cast aspersions on the appointment or not. But as a Pierre boy myself, this is a very good appointment. She is bright, industrious, and independent (ask Karl and Eileen :) ) She will represent her district very well.

I wish she had run, as opposed to having been appointed.

Unfortunately, thanks to Rounds, we now have the situation with him appointing his business partner’s daughter. And she’s going to have that shadow chasing behind her legislative career.

Of course, while rumors have Rounds about to slash state employee salaries and have forced unpaid days off while will cut services to old people like me, he is going to appoint somebody he knows to the job. Why would he appoint somebody he doesn’t know?

My goodness; a few weeks ago PP was wailing about Senator Johnson’s son being appointed this state’s US attorney. Now we have Rounds appointing the daughter of his business partner to the state Legislature. Wait, this is okay because it involves Republicans.

Anon, Are you admitting that it wasn’t ok for Senator Johnson to anoint his son?

Because if you dems are finally admitting it, let us know how low you’re going to set the bar for right and wrong. Because Senator Johnson’s naked nepotism makes it pretty easy to beat in terms of honor.

Hey 10:44. Love the moronic hairsplitting.
Either both are ok, both are NOT ok or none of it matters.
Period.
Naked nepotism…naked cronyism.
Or not.
Pick one or the other.
The gerrmandered lines on these issues dictated by the need to justify the actions of one political party or another is just plain stupid. Not to mention dishonest.

gerrymandered. It’s early.

10:35, you have a point but it works both ways. Some of the same folks who are carping about this were the ones defending the Johnson guys.

Besides, there is a difference. If she wants to stay in the job she’ll have to stand for election. We are stuck with Johnson the Younger until Obama is defeated. But then again, US Attys kept their jobs for years when Bush was elected. So who knows.

What I 1st read this I thought so what. I can see the Dems point on this. The big differnce is she is not Gov. Rounds daughter as opposed to TJ son. To be upfront TJ and his son didn’t bother me either.

Rounds’ appointment of his partner’s daughter is no big deal in itself. It’s a limited appointment and she has to get reelected on her own. However, in typical Rounds croney-speak, he didn’t disclose the relationship during her appointment. No big suprise with that guy and that’s what’s wrong with the appointment. What is further disturbing is the non-disclosure of the relationship was encouraged by Conzet herself. She wanted to be judged on her own merits. That’s dandy. Her only merit that I see is that she’s Round’s partner’s daughter. Disclosing that upfront would have been much better than acting like the white knightess that wasn’t. What the hell is wrong with saying “Hi, I’m smiling Mike and I’m appointing my partner’s daughter who I’ve known and respected for 20 years and I think she’ll do fine.” Much better approach then continually assuming that we’re a bunch of bucket drooling morons automactically ingesting all of the slop being dished out.

TJ’s appointment is vastly different. First, it’s his friggin kid. Second, US Attorney position at $140K+ is a little different than a state rep hauling in a whopping $8-9K per year. Third, TJ said he’d stay out. He lied.

In sum, being a dirtbag politician isn’t limited to one particular party.

good morning thc, hope you are more awake now. you opine that i’m splitting hairs but that doesn’t mean you’re right. to ordinary south dakotans not in elected positions, rounds appointment is just another example of the good old boy’s club in state government.

and when did i state i thought johnson’s son being nominated and appointed US attorney was right or wrong? That’s just a moronic assumption. Have a great day!

Troy, which district do you mean, Pierre or Rapid City?

Rapid City. She intends to run and that is who she is answerable to. If you knew her, she is her own person. There is no lapdog in this gal.
