WE THE PEOPLE!

Steve Hickey is motivated to restore representation in government. Like many South Dakotans he’s tired of the elite’s disconnect from the reality in America and with the American taxpayer. On every issue, Steve Hickey represents the mainstream of South Dakota values.

A COMMON-SENSE CONSERVATIVE

Principled, consistent, rooted in faith and guided by values. A stark contrast to what we see in Washington – the rushed, corrupt, open bribery of elected officials with tax payer money. Steve Hickey won’t participate in that, or be quiet about it, regardless of who benefits.

BOLD AND BALANCED for South Dakota

Steve Hickey is focused on what improves life for ordinary people and makes society better. He’s not so much beholden to the political right or left but understands elected officials work for the people of South Dakota and answer also to God. Steve is accessible, easy to talk to and articulate. He has demonstrated he knows how to represent those not being heard and, that he’s not timid when it comes to saying what needs to be said to those who need to hear it, even when it’s unpopular.

STEVE HICKEY believes in SELF-GOVERNMENT & PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Civil people governing themselves by living lives consistent with the Judeo-Christian ethic of our Founding Fathers.

LIMITED GOVERNMENT and STATES’ RIGHTS

As much as possible, government should be limited and local, closer to and more accountable to the governed. The purpose of government is to protect us not provide for us. At its best, government empowers individuals, families, churches and communities to assist people. Steve is concerned that some government expansions presently on the table in Washington are unconstitutional especially as they violate the 10th Amendment and usurp states’ rights.

STEVE HICKEY is a voice for the HARD WORKING MIDDLE CLASS

It’s about jobs for ordinary people! Cut taxes and regulations on job creators and the middle class so more people are succeeding not just surviving. Steve started a large church and daycare in South Dakota that currently employs 52 people! That’s job creation! He’s spent a couple decades caring, listening, serving and he stands apart as one with a pulse on the struggles of the working poor.

STEVE HICKEY is strong on TAX RELIEF/REFORM & SPENDING CUTS

Common-sense solutions toward fiscal restraint and a government that lives within its means; a FairTax and sound money advocate.

RIGHT ON stimulating the ECONOMY

Bailouts are irresponsible, fundamentally wrong, and even immoral as they dump debt on our grandchildren. The government should not be “using Mastercard to pay off Visa.”

STEVE HICKEY is right on SMALL BUSINESS & FARMING

Encouraging small business as our economy’s backbone; agriculture as South Dakota’s heritage.

HEALTH CARE REFORM

Move toward consumer-owned insurance policies that are as portable as employees are. Shift from a disease care system to a health system. A patient-centered, free-market health care system.

STEVE HICKEY is strong on ENERGY INDEPENDENCE & THE ENVIRONMENT

Explore! Conserve! Committed to South Dakota becoming a leader in renewable and fossil fuel energy; wind, solar, bio-fuels. Energy independence coupled with caring for creation.

STEVE HICKEY is committed to RIGHT WRONGS with Native Americans

Picking up the George Mickelson reconciliation mantle, Steve Hickey is the only candidate working to right wrongs with Native Americans – beginning with national acknowledgement and greater awareness to partnership in economic and community development.

STEVE HICKEY is a LIFE & ADOPTION ADVOCATE

Pro-life from conception to natural death. Adoption advocate. Steve has put his money where his mouth is supporting women in crisis pregnancies and has rallied people statewide with the message on women and the unborn… Why can’t we love both? One of the first places to cut spending in Washington is the $335 million taxpayer dollars that go to Planned Parenthood every year.

STEVE HICKEY has stood up for CHILDREN, FAMILY & MARRIAGE

Moms and dads raise kids better than government. Government should undergird not undermine the basic family structure.

STEVE HICKEY on HUNTING & GUN OWNERSHIP

Member of the NRA, life-long hunter and gun owner. Support 2nd Amendment rights.

STEVE HICKEY is for STRONG SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES

Married to a former public middle school teacher; started a large daycare. Raised three kids in the public school system – active in school and community life.

STEVE HICKEY on FAITH & FREEDOM OF RELIGION

Concerned our enemies (i.e. radical Islamists) are starting to enjoy more freedom here while the Judeo-Christian tradition is increasingly muzzled. Understands the wall separating church and state was intended to be a one-way wall – prohibiting the state from restraining the free exercise of religion, not meant to expunge religious expression and influence from the public square. Faith has a central place in our national and public life.

STEVE HICKEY on LAW ENFORCEMENT, MILITARY & VETERANS

Peace through strength. Veterans benefits. Grew up in a military home. Has served as a Sioux Falls Police Chaplain since 2001.

RIGHT ON AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM

September 11th birthed a new wave of patriotism in America and a re-awakening to our national identity as the most good and generous nation on the planet. The United States occupies a special place and position among the nations of the world.

STEVE HICKEY has been married to Kristen for twenty-one years; together they are parents to Caleb (20), Thomas (17) and Kaitlyn (16). Steve is the founding pastor of Church at the Gate and GO KIDS! Daycare & Learning Center in Sioux Falls (1994, 2004), Sioux Falls Police Dept. & Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain (2001), he’s the current president of the Siouxland ministerial association, author of two books, past Cubmaster/Boy Scout Leader and small business entrepreneur.  Steve has studies and post-graduate degrees in political science/history and religion/divinity.

Sounds like a great guy. I like what he thinks should be done. How are his fundraisng skills? Good Luck!

But ask him what he thinks of our “fiat currency”.

Oh great. Just what we need, another candidate to drain resources while Hidey sits it out.

He is running for CONGRESS–What does that have to do with Hidey??

Steve Hickey? The nutjob from the Voices Carry blog?

Hahahahahahahaha! Awesome! Without that Thad guy, I was worried that this race would be dull. But Hickey is sure to bring some entertainment and craziness to this race. I can’t wait!

We have three Rock Solid South Dakota candidates in Blake Curd, Chris Nelson and Steve Hickey. South Dakota will be well served with any one of these candidates. All three have integrity and South Dakota values. All three will give Rep. Sandlin a very serious challenge.

I 2nd that Al! This is a trio who will bring civilized politics to the table. Any of the three would be true statesmen in DC. This brings new energy to my party loyalty in seeing GOP candidates that meet my standards for the party.

What about the Daugaard commercial that made it’s debut on the olympics? I have not seen it yet.

Yah! It shore looked like a really expensive ad paid for by lots of state employees who want to keep their $90,000 jobs.

What about Hundstad? I think he’s the force that will have to be reconed with here. Hundstad!!! Hundstad!! Hundstad!! If you haven’t met him then you don’t know Hundstad!!

The Daugaard commercial that hit the airwaves tonight is available on his website. I just found it at http://www.daugaardforgovernor.com/

Oh great. Now a guy who thinks the earth is 5000 years old is running for Congress. My only consolation is that Hickey will free the other candidates to have intelligent discussions by tying up the vote of the Krazy Kat Wing of the Republican Party.

Is how old the earth is something that they vote on in Congress?

I won’t be surprised to find out the Steve Hickey believes that global warming climate change is not worth doubling my energy bill in an attempt to lower the earth’s temperature less than one degree.

Reminder: The global warming climate change debate is over. I don’t have any facts to prove this but please take my word on it.

Did you catch the article in the New York Times that documents that all this snow is caused by global warming climate change

I have noticed that the candidates will just about say and do just about anything to get in to office. Even the Democrats sound more conservative, some even more conservative that their Republican counterparts.

There are three good candidates. They all talk the talk, now let’s see if they can walk the walk

Sorry, meant Herseth. No difference. :-)

Nick you should run for the US House, take a De-Cap and Trade-Em bill tied in with a Bureaucrat Methane Gas bill along with you and get rid of all those coal slamming methane belching buggers who have it out for us NORMAL guys here in fly over country. How bout it?+-

Sorry Steve, I prefer the separation of church and state.

Steve is a great guy and

Steve is a great guy! I wish him well!

Nice photo! Looks like he’s being lit by the fires of Hades and that Van Dyke he’s sporting on his chin doesn’t help matters either. I’ve no doubt that Steve is a swell guy and doesn’t really sit at the left hand of Lucifer, but, judging by the photo, it certainly looks like it. Not that you should judge a book by its cover, but maybe he should throw a few bucks at a photographer to help him improve his image a bit. It certainly couldn’t hurt, and considering how the economy’s been for the last year or so, it wouldn’t hurt the photographer either!

Photogenic 10:51, Tune up you laptop or get a new monitor, he looks just fine to me. To give your point the measurable weight it should carry in SD, I guess looks is what put SHS in offic so I see we have come no farther than to elect by looks. Thanks for your Herseth vote on looks and your Johnson vote on sympathy. I appreciate where this is taking our state!!!!

Big AL Novstrup @6:10AM

It wouldn’t matter if they voted on the age of the Earth in Congress. Such a vote wouldn’t change the fact that the Earth is billions of years older than the 5000+/- years that Mr. Hickey claims it to be.

But, if enough people of his mindset are elected to public office scientific education in this country will suffer. That alone is enough of a reason to fear his election or the election of others that share his views.

NO CHANCE FOR HIM ID BET ON IT.

Nick perhaps you have Hickey confused with Bob Ellis. I’ve known Steve for years and he’s stayed away from the fray on the young earth debate. He believes God created the heavens and the earth as do most South Dakotans. Quit with the fear.

So we have Nelson, Curd, I already forgot his name (tarn or something) and Hickey?

What about Dusty Johnson? Come on Dusty the rumors are really swirling that you would walk away with this thing!

Nick,

Do you know that Steve believes the world is only 5000 years old or do you assume he believes that the earth is 5000 years old because he is a self-proclaimed born again christian?

Not all born christians believe that the world is 5000 years old. I know evangelical christians who believe otherwise, but they still believe that God created thee earth.

Unless you have heard Steve say that he believes the earth is 5000 years old your statement is just demagoging.

Nick, the character respect you’ve built with me, diminishes with your last post. I won’t argue with you on the age of the earth, I don’t know. What I find interesting is, how positive you are in knowing the facts of the earths age and trying to diminish others with your so called knowledge or expertise however you wish to phrase it. You go so far as to say how different beliefs will affect our future in science. I say you are no different than those given the serum over the past years, willing to diminish others based upon your beliefs of somehow sharing a higher common ground, exactly as you hypothesize on Steve Hickey. Good luck in your future.

Is it true that Rounds still has over $500,000 in his campaign fund? That is what someone told me recently.

Wouldn’t some of that money really help the SD GOP?

I always have a deep suspicion of folks who claim to have family values, but don’t value all the varieties of wonderful families there are.

We now have three great candidates. With respect to this whole issue about how old dirt is, I spent my time in the social sciences and don’t profess any expertise. But, my friend Nick, I can say with absolute certainty that we can’t have people in congress who don’t understand where the money they spend comes from – or that it has to be paid back. That is an issue that they vote on every day and we need to replace our current congresswoman who is really bad at the sciences of math and economics.

Lee I think your way off on your picks.

Another back-water hillbilly that makes South Dakota a laughing stock to the rest of the world.

Hmm,

It looks like some folks just can’t resist knee jerk Christian bashing as anti-science, backwater hillbillies.

To say that religion and science are incompatible is to ignore hundreds of years of history. The two spheres of science and theology should complement each other without intruding unnaturally.

Please read Comment by Lee Schoenbeck on February 13, 2010 @ 6:47 pm
Then read todays article in the Argus Misleader..

Lee you just said we have three candidates…but in the Argus Liar today when asked about Rounds entering the race, you said two is enough…what is it? Two or three??
Lee you just lost a lot of points with me with what appears to be, you talking out of both sides of your mouth(not that my points mean anything..lol)..I wish the argus liar or SDWC would call you out on this…
Nothing personal..but when I read on SDWC you say we have three great candidates then on the MSM you tell everyone two is enough!
What is it Lee??
If it where up to me…we would see as many candidtes as possible until we beat Stephie…

PP: not sure if this is the proper way to link back to a news story…sorry….

http://www.argusleader.com/article/20100214/NEWS/2140328

“We’ve got two really good candidates right now, and we don’t need a third,” said Lee Schoenbeck, the former state Senate president who retired in 2006.

Interesting….

I think the argus story predates the announcement by at least a few days.

I guess I just don’t see the conflict with what Lee’s saying. Saying that 2 candidates is enough, doesn’t negate the fact that with the announcement of a third, he acknowledges we now have 3 GOOD candidates.

I would agree with Lee that the 2 candidates already in the running were enough but that doesn’t mean I don’t think Steve Hickey isn’t a good candidate.

I think that there is always room for more. Personally I would like to see Schoenbeck enter the congressional race.

How is it that we don’t need more candidates? I can see quite a few flaws with Curd and Nelson. I can see flaws with Herseth but she is the incumbant. It is going to take a very motivated individual to win the race in 2004.

If Mr Hickey had asked me, I would have told him that we had two good candidates and we didn’t need anymore. Now we have three, and if anybody asks me about another one – I would say we don’t need 4. Man, I remember when we couldn’t get one. I like primaries – I think they help challengers get name-id, build organization, and gain the experience of a statewide campaign —- but we really don’t need any more candidates for this one.

Is Hickey going to leave his pastor job at the church (or is he still going to remain a pastor there?)

Anyone know?

Pastor Do Hickey has about as good of a chance winning as good ole Janoct Ajda, who’s running for mayor in SF (2nd time).
One thing both of these guys bring to the races is entertainment!

Well both Nelson and Curd have been running since October and I have yet to hear hardly anything from either.

What I would like to know is why they both announced in October at the SD GOP Dinner rather than on TV or something else?

If I wasn’t active in the party I wouldn’t know who the heck they were and that scares me!

I wouldn’t be too concerned yet, pickles.

They’ve both been getting their organizations together, getting their petitions circulated, raising money, getting their message out to folks that are active in the GOP.

Unless someone is active in politics, it’s unlikely that they’re paying a lot of attention to politics, at this point.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

How does it work with a lead pastor of a church running for public office? Doesn’t that present some issues with the tax exempt status for the church? With all of his campaigning in the months to come has anyone heard if he’s going to resign his position?

Why on earth would that pose an issue with a tax exemption for his church? The church isn’t running for office.

I’m certain his campaign headquarters, staff, etc. will be based somewhere other than his church…

I gave no doubt his campaign office will be somewhere other than the church, it’s just that there’s a fine line between what clergy in tax exempt organizations are allowed to do in regards to politics, there is no law prohibiting him from running, but if he had flyers for his election in the church, used church frontage for ads etc, it would nix the tax exempt status for the church.
On a second note, is he taking a pay cut with all the campaigning he’ll be doing, it’s not like he’ll be preaching every Sunday.

A real conservative – awesome!

Anon 10:30p
I’m sure that as a candidate, Steve Hickey is aware of the legal requirements to separate his church from his campaign. I’m sure he expects a lot of scrutiny and will run his campaign accordingly.

As to his pay, I can only assume that his church board has the final say on his salary.

If he continued to receive full pay during the campaign couldn’t one make the assessment that the church is “funding” his campaign? They would be PAYING him to be a candidate, not their pastor

Anon 11:35a

I am in no way involved in Steve Hickey’s campaign, but I assume that the pastor and his church are fully aware of the campaign laws and the campaign has a legal adviser involved in its operation.

Particularly, since some people appear to be extremely concerned about having an actual ordained minister running for political office.

Ordained ministers in the US Congress are not particularly uncommon as there are currently at least 3 I can think of; Emanuel Cleaver, Ed Towns and Bobby Rush.

Anon, If you did some research, you’d discover at least one active pastor and several retired pastors signed the Declaration of Independence, not to mention the majority of those signed having graduated from seminary . You would also find out that congress began many times in that era with all on their knees in prayer asking the Lord for wisdom, direction and blessing on our nation. It might be the reason we became the greatest nation on planet earth.

Guys, I’m not trying to rip Steve apart, I agree with everything he’s saying.
I do however take issue IF he continues to take a full salary during the campaign. I’m all for pastors in leadership, but let’s be real, if you worked anywhere else and told them you were only going to be able to work a week a month, they’d either fire you , or pay you less.

Anon 11:43p

That may indeed be the case, and I’m sure that’s an issue his church has addressed.

Maybe I’m wrong, but given the fact the Steve Hickey does indeed have a bit of a high profile in this state, I can’t imagine that the issues you’ve pointed out have not been addressed before he made his announcement.

Despite some disparaging comments (Do-Hickey, et al) most people that know Steve Hickey know that he’s no dummy and realize that his campaign will be “under a microscope”.

All I can say at this point is that SHS has an interesting blend of challengers and she’ll be in a race unlike any she’s faced before.

The ultimate GOP challenger for her seat will have to debate and win over the voters for their challenge like never before.

This man is truly a grounded leader. I am very excited about this. He represents EVERYTHING that is important to me and my family.

I’ve known Steve Hickey for years and he is a good man. His common-sense conservative principles represent our South Dakota values and he would serve our state very well. Any attacks on his credibility are unmerited and reflect the lack of knowledge from which such critiques originate. Go get ‘em, Steve!
