Drinkin’ on the rez’ with the Frugal Traveler?

The New York Times has a bizarre article from their contributor “the Frugal Traveler” where he tries to romanticize his sneaking liquor on to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

But stop I did, for there was one place I had to see: the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This is the home of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, historically one of the worst-treated Native American tribes, as well as one of the most romanticized (see “Dances With Wolves”). Poverty is endemic, along with diabetes and alcoholism. And its struggles with the federal government have been storied and tragic. As an American citizen, I felt a certain duty to witness the effects of my government’s actions. And as the Frugal Traveler, I figured some time on one of the country’s poorest reservations wouldn’t hurt my wallet.

and…

Toward evening, J. T. and I drove into the town of Pine Ridge to pick up dinner from Pizza Hut — the first national chain I have visited this summer — then skipped across state lines into Nebraska to buy two cases of Hurricane malt liquor, which we hustled into the back of my Volvo and covered with a blanket. This subterfuge seemed so normal, so routine, that I didn’t quite realize I might be breaking the law. I wasn’t being too frugal either. I’d paid $21 for the pizza, $42 for the beer, and I offered J. T. $20 for his tour services. Back at J. T.’s house, we ate with his wife and youngest son, and watched the privileged blondes of MTV’s “Laguna Beach” coo over a new Mercedes S.U.V.

Read all of the article here.  Am I the only one seeing the contradiction about his lamenting the alcoholism and diabetes of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation - at the same time he’s picking up pizza from Pizza Hut, and buying 2 cases of Hurriciane Malt Liquor - A high alcohol beverage which I’ve only seen available in 40 oz cans?

I’d hate to see what this guy does when he interviews heroin addicts.

Typically among false-Republican neo-cons, PP sees only the words on the page and misses the story.

It’s unlikely PP would even have seen this story had he not been clued in by Mt Blogmore.

Of course, there’s a contradiction. Duh. But it’s not the same sort of egregious contradiction PP exhibits when he promotes neo-con policies that are anti-personal sovereignty and anti-liberty.

Typically among boobs who spend too much time in the marijuana culture, Bob’s synapses didn’t bother to fire as he typed causing him to contemplate that two people each might read the NY times on-line edition.

I picked it up from my Google news alert, which piqued my interest to write my article. I’m always happy to give Blogmore credit when I pick something up from them - I have lots of respect for both Kevin and Bill, and the RCJ is my #1 newspaper.

I just hadn’t caught that one on Blogmore, which interested parties can certainly read at http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/politicalblog/?p=2137

Boobs, eh? Now who’s posting “drug and sexual content” on War College?

PP, are you sure the Frugal Traveler isn’t writing for the Onion?

Hurriciane Malt Liquor comes in 40oz Glass Bottles, not cans.

Maybe where you shop, but in my store, they do have a huge can available. In my college days, I even tried the stuff…. My reponse? Blech. It serves no purpose other than a cheap buzz.

Blech. It serves no purpose other than a cheap buzz.

Oh, hi. Didn’t see you standing there. I was just “trying out our new ad jingle for Hurricane. What do you think of it?

I think it really separates the Hurricane customer from the uppity folks who claim their expensive buzz tastes better.

For TV ads, we’d have a buncha people in torn armless t-shirts, each staggering with a single 40-ouncer in hand, laughing at the suit-and-necktie fool who has to drink a sixer of expensive Budweiser to be able to face the evening.

In a week, we’ll have millions of folks grabbing a “40 of H” on their way home from the office. Genius. Pure genius.
