I’m sorry. Did a big news story just happen?
I was waiting with anticipation this morning to see what angle the Argus was going to take on Chad Schuldt being named as the alleged embezzler in “Hildygate.”
If you recall, Steve Hildebrand himself pointed the finger (at the RollCall.com website).
So I’m thinking, national level political firm, embezzlement of over $100 thousand, mysterious accused person finally being named, etcetera, that’s going to at least be worth a blurb in the paper as a story which continues to develop.
But today, there’s nary a mention in our state’s largest newspaper. I didn’t note it in the regular articles on-line, and Kranz is busy writing about a basketball game. The Voices weblog is spending most of it’s time talking about Harry Potter (which I just bought last night for my kids, BTW).
But, no update on “Hildygate?”
I find that odd, given the attention they’re giving to Tapken’s embezzlement. And how many stories did we hear about the gal taking money from the country club? Don’t even get me started on stories they did about Republicans who were not charged with anything, but somehow, they were intensely newsworthy.
Yet, here’s someone accused of a more than a petty crime, and it was deemed newsworthy for a national publication. Yet, when we get a story that’s more fully ripe for reporting, what are we getting from our state’s flagship newspaper?
Crickets chirping in the silence.
When the embezzlement involves one of South Dakota’s highest profile Democrats, and he points the finger at another very high profile Democrat, we get nothing? The silence is almost deafening.
I take no pleasure in reading about Chad’s problems, and I’m sure he’s miserable enough. But there have been people grousing in the comments and on other blogs that the Argus’ reporting can be a bit biased against Republicans. Not being a conspiracy theorist, I try to discount that kind of stuff automatically.
But in this instance, when the story is finally ripe, people are naming names, and we get…. nothing? What evidence do we have to refute the gathering accusations of bias?
Nothing.

Dude, this is news to you? c’mon. The Argus Leader has been the public relations firm for the South Dakota Democrats for about 2 decades now. All conservatives should cancel all advertising with the Argus Leader, should cancel their subscriptions, and not talk to Argus “reporters,” i.e. Democratic operatives.
Am I missing something here? Liberal or not, the Argus isn’t the only news organization in the state but yet they broke the story and none of these other MSM organizations have said a thing regarding this other than a short Harlan post on Blogmore. So why is all the wrath suddenly aimed at just the Argus?
Kranz is Schuldt’s buddy.
And Schuldt used to work at the Argus.
Someone should ask them about this.
The Argus will magnify and embellish any Republican stumble into the next Watergate.
The Argus will minimize and bury any Democratic stumble.
ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS.
the Argus DID break the story, but yeah, it was a weak effort on a big story and they haven’t done anything since. they probably figure they can ignore it now. i bet that woman at the country club wishes they would have ignored her story.
Bob -
My point is that the story just became much bigger, with a bunch of new information, such as the identity of the accused.
And they’ve gone farther with less on Republicans.
I was just looking for their take on the big development in the story, but we get nothing, as if it hasn’t happened.
PP,
I understand your point and even with the obvious issues with the Argus’ reporting or lack thereof, I do not understand how $100,000 missing from such a high profile company doesn’t make it’s way on to any other MSM outlets even without naming names.
Who cares about the “other” news orgs, who just report on local garage sales etc. the Argus bills itself as THE source of news, THE newspaper of record, THE end-all, be-all of journalism.
The fact is that even those of us who think the Argus isn’t as bad as everyone believes — we completely lose faith when they do dumb things like this (and last week smearing Dan Scott).
I think you would all be surprised if you knew how many democrats don’t like or respect Hildy. Chad received much of the same because of his close association with Hildy.
Don’t remember which President it was, but the saying still holds true, “You could fill volumes with the stuff they don’t print.”
All these Argus conspiracy theories. Even though they broke the story, and even though the tv news stations have done little to nothing with it, IT’S ALL JUST A BIG ARGUS COVERUP!!!???
You folks really are pathetic. Hildebrand didn’t give Schuldt’s name to the Argus, so how could they run the name? That’s the difference with the country club woman - Westward Ho gave the press her name.
O.K. So now Chad Schuldt’s name is out there after the Roll Call story. Is Kelo covering it up? Is KSFY covering it up? Is KDLT covering it up? Just the Argus you say - and everyone else gets a pass?
And unlike Tapken, Schuldt is not a public figure and he has not been charged. He has not run for or held public office, and the public has no idea who he is. Outside of blog readers and political party activists, Schuldt is unknown. He’s certainly not the “high profile democrat” PP wants to make him out to be. More of a back room technocrat - just like PP.
Yeah we get it already, you hate the argus. Pop a few downers, tune in Rush and try and calm your asses down. Here’s a suggestion for all you argus bashers - don’t buy it and don’t read it. Then we won’t have to listen to your incessant bitching and whining re: argus content.
Pick up the neo-con daily if you’re jonesing for a shit sandwich from Bush and Co, who by the way, have blown about $500B entrusted to them.
PP - why don’t you call up the Argus and ask em why they’re not giving this a run. You just claimed a few post back you make phone calls.
And here’s a Post idea for you PP to kill some time until the Agrus delivers you a pound of CCK’s flesh - How bout write something on that disgusting embarrassment that is the Gonzales affair, or are you too much of a blind idealogue to touch it.
Is this really news? Sure to the few political junkies that read this blog and others it is. However the average Joe in Sioux Falls, Tea or Harrisburg, this doesn’t matter. If you want news, where is the coverage on the Tea/Sioux Falls/Harrisburg versus Lincoln County Rural Water lawsuit. Now there is a waste of our tax dollars.
PP,
The only bias I see is yours.
Why aren’t you calling out all of the SD newspapers who are not carrying this (which I believe is all of SD’s newspapers) for not reprinting the Roll Call item?
I love how all the liberals do everything they can to defend the Argus Leader….the liberals know where their bread is buttered!
Maybe no one at the Argus looked at Roll Call.com yesterday. I know I wouldn’t have heard about it if PP didn’t point that article out to us.
Chad Schuldt, who liked to try to get people fired: “I’ve tried to step back from attacking Thune on a daily basis, even when he deserves it, to give this era of bipartisanship we are enjoying between Senators Johnson and Thune, along with Representative Herseth a chance to flourish. But you have decided you want to fuck with my livelihood, Quentin? You want to screw with the income I earn to support my three kids? If that’s where your idiotic game leads us, then bring it on. I’m ready to fire back if necessary. To answer your question, yeah, I work for Hildebrand. And I’m proud of it.” Nutso.
One key difference with the Westerward Ho case - the country club filed a lawsuit against her in court.
That hasn’t happened in this case.
Maybe that’s the real story - why no charges filed yet in this case ?
i’m not an Argus basher, but they really need to do a serious story on this matter…it is clearly justified and there is clearly much reader interest.
Hey 17., who’s going to defend the Rapid City Journal for covering up this story? Evidently they’ve switched their bias to liberal?
And the Watertown and Mitchell and Pierre and Aberdeen and Huron papers? All gone pinko?
All the Argus bashers claiming the “liberals” are defending the Argus.
No, commenters (most of whom have not identified any political slant of any kind) are actually just pointing out the double standard of those who bash the Argus without bashing any other newspapers or tv stations. The Argus coverage has actually been more than most other news, but you don’t let that get in the way of your bashing, do you? Just because I call out your double standard doesn’t make me liberal - which I am not.
Don’t be surprised to see a more detailed story in the Argus at some point, but your constant whining will have nothing to do with it.
26: It just not the Argus. It is the AP, the TV trinity…it is the whole Drive-by media. In other words…the ruling elite.
Still waiting to see the fair and balanced story on fox. Will it name Schuldt? Will it blame the victim?

The Argus newsroom is run by liberals. And liberals protect their own. They only see Republican scandals at legitimate scandals. This is why most people think the Argus Leader is garbage.
