Accolades continue for Daschle vs. Thune: Anatomy of a High-Plains Senate Race
“Jon Lauck’s account of one of the hardest-fought elections in the 2004 campaign should be must reading for Democrats as much as Republicans.”
– MICHAEL BARONE, Senior Writer, U.S. News and World Report.
As I finally get a chance to crack the cover of my copy of former SDP Blogger Jon Lauck’s book Daschle vs. Thune: Anatomy of a High-Plains Senate Race, it’s fun to watch Jon get the attention this book deserves.
The latest? Jon is in an audio interview over at National Review On-line:
Go check it out here, as well as on the NR Blog:
Laucking Back to 2004 [John J. Miller]
If the 2008 Senate races have you down, perhaps it’s worth looking back at what may have been the most important Senate race of 2004: Jon Thune’s victory over Tom Daschle.
Otherwise, even just flipping through the book, it’s fun to see some of our local SD personalities quoted such as my friend Todd Epp (”We got our assess handed to us.” – page 189).
And here’s one that sounds EXACTLY like Daschle’s recent e-mail pleas for campaign money for Tim Johnson:
A Rapid City Journal reporter noted that the Daschle Campaign, in response to criticism, would send out calls for more funds with “the ink smeared by tears over the deplorable ads.” (Page 160-161)
I can’t stop laughing now that I’ve seen that one, because even after losing, DASCHLE IS STILL DOING THAT. For god’s sake, didn’t he learn that schtick stops working after a while?
Ah. Good memories.
I’d better quit typing. I have work to do, a book to read, and a dinner to attend tonight.
Oops. Almost forgot – Go buy the book here at Amazon.com where is ranks as follows:
Amazon.com Sales Rank:
#145,232 in Books (See Bestsellers in Books)
#4 – South Dakota Books and
#98 in election books.

Lauck’s book is really quite fair. It’s mostly factual and about what happened. Some people, like Kevin Woster on Mt. Blogmore, can only envision a book that is a Daschle love-fest because that’s all they’ve ever known. It’s nice to actually have somebody who will call as they see ‘em. It would have been dumb for Lauck to just write a book which was one-sided and therefore quickly forgotten, so I think he did it right, whatever the squawkers like Chad Schuldt say.
Someday TD will throw down a flamethrower and a layer of preventative political chemistry across all the dickweeds that have sprung up and taken root in his absence, and they will be gone in a twinkling.
Meanwhile we have to feel the pricks of their unwelcome, shortsighted stupidity.
Every dog has his day, as they say.
so US News and National Review are covering this book but the Argus Leader can’t be bothered to?? pathetic
I simply cannot believe that with all the attention this book is getting nationally that the Argus Leader is pretending that it doesn’t exist??? how obnoxious is that?
Good grief, don’t you guys know that the rightwing books are bought by the thousands to distribute free and give away for fundraising and the purchases drive up the apparent sales numbers to make it appear that a lot of people in a lot of places are buying the book.
That said, the Daschle campaign literature and ads sucked from day one and never did get better. Daschle should have been fully aware that he was going to be the target of a dirty campaign and have been ready to respond with attacks that shredded Thune.
Daschle would be on the road to the presidency right now if he had voted against Bush’s unconstitutional illegitimate war against Iraq. Daschle underestimated the intelligence of South Dakotans and he underestimated the GOP slime machine.
Great analysis of the race! Of course the Argus isn’t going to mention it. One of the main themes was the Argus Leader misdeeds and control over the years and how that was bypassed in the 2004 election.
I would like to start trading on Forex and i have heard that they are robots that do this really well. can anyone share their experience with such. I don’t want to waste my time or money. Please share any other business opportunities you may have as well. thank you.

Very cool, PP. I just got my copy of the book and there is loads of history and other interesting asides. I’m sure the Daschle team will slime Lauck and the Argus Leader will ignore the book, but that only makes his point!
