Roll Call on the Democratic and GOP Bench
I wish I could just reprint the whole darned thing, as Roll Call has a huge article on the potentials in South Dakota’s federal campaigns. But that’s bad form, so here’s just a snippet from the democratic side of things:
If and when Herseth Sandlin ever vacates her House seat, look for Brendan Johnson (D), a Sioux Falls attorney and the son of Sen. Johnson, to run to replace the Congresswoman, say Democrats with knowledge of South Dakota politics.
State Senate Minority Leader Scott Heidepriem (D), a former Republican from Sioux Falls, also is thought of as a top-tier House candidate — though both he and Brendan Johnson could be tapped to run for Senate if Herseth Sandlin declined to do so, either in the event of Sen. Johnson’s retirement or when Sen. John Thune (R) is up in 2010.
Also talked about as potential Congressional candidates are state Sen. Nancy Turbak (D), of Watertown, and Rapid City’s Eric Abrahamson, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in 2006.
One Democratic strategist familiar with South Dakota referred to Heidepriem and Johnson as the “consensus top guys” among state Democrats to run for Congress the next time an opportunity arises.

Just a question. Why do Democrats keep touting Eric Abrahamson? I’m sure he’s a nice guy and all. But I’ve never known a stint on the state library board to ever make anyone a political tour de force.
Hmmm.

I’m not sure how Abrahamson got himself on the gubernatorial ticket last year. Nobody east of Rapid City had ever heard of him. And with that campaign now behind us, still nobody east of Rapid City has heard of him. He did not effectively use that opportunity to build his profile statewide. Nor did he seem to contribute much of value to the Democratic gubernatorial ticket.
Besides being unknown, Abrahamson is apparently a very recent transplant to South Dakota. He should not be included within the top tier of congressional candidates.
RE: Eric Abrahamson.
Spend an hour with him.
You’ll see.
Spend a day with him
and you’ll be handing
out bumper stickers.
4. Is that you, BF?
As for Abrahamson, he’s the darling of the RCJ lib reporters and DIA (the liberal — uh, sorry — “progressive” women’s group). Enough said.
There were three of them and I still did better statewide for the buck than Abrahamson, Billion and the Argus Leader.
Who are these crack pot “Democrats with knowledge of South Dakota politics”?
Bruce, give it a rest. Your candidacy and campaign were a joke. Any marginally warm body on the R ticket is going to get votes in the low thirties. Rounds had the R-election machine well oiled and well funded. Your party sent you out into the night in a squeaky rust-bucket. How much did Herseth spend to throw you on the dust heap? Bet is was less than Mike’s two mill. Your party propped you up and abandoned you almost simultaneously after the viable candidates ran for cover cause they didn’t want to lose to Herseth. You can bet the R-posers for the house in this cycle are hoping she runs for senate cause that is their only hope at not getting beat.
Abrahamson is engaging, smart and articulate, and has ties to SD – I think his grandparents lived in Wessington or Wess. Springs – unlike Kephart who has his puppet masters back in California.
I do not doubt that Abrahamson is engaging, smart and articulate. But he’s unknown and not from around here. If there is an open seat for congress, you will see any number of Democrats who are from South Dakota, who are better known, and who have been elected to more than the school board getting into the race. I don’t think Abrahamson stands much of a chance.
Eric is kinda funny lookin’, and the only kinda funny lookin’ guy around these parts that stands a chance of being elected to anything is PP.
What about Turbak. She won 52% against a political new comer in Watertown. Now that is a force to contend with?
The last two weeks of the legislative session when she found out what it is really like to get beat on every vote as a minority party member. Then her potty mouth really came out in the halls in Pierre. Everyone in Watertown has heard this story.
Once the little old ladies see the true Turbak they will run and hide and she has no chance of winning statewide.
Another question, on the national level, who are the five gutless Republicans in the US Senate who refused to reinstate the Habeas Corpus laws in America that date back to the Magna Carta?
Turbak hyphenated her name like…what’s her name and married a guy from Nantucket or some such place. The democrats should definitely run her!
Abrahamson seems to be a good guy, but he can’t even win back his own district (where people know him).
Commodore, Rapid Creek Yacht Club
It is with consternation that I observe frivolous behavior on the part our our proud yacht club members. On behalf of our charter members and other dignitaries, it is with great sorrow that I must condemn a remark made by one of our Vice Commodores of the Rapid Creek Yacht Club about coming in the closet.
Commodore
I don’t believe that you have a Yacht Club on Rapid Creek. Next, you will tell me that O.J. is innnocent. Are you a Democrat?
Abrahamson has about the same name recognition as Dykstra does for the average South Dakotan. I’d rather have a guy like that running for Congress then the Senate.
16. I can’t use my own name, I had myself banned. (Other posters were using my name, so I asked PP to shut us all down.) Anyway, it shouldn’t make any diff to you. You always find me out, regardless… which is, in and of itself, curious to me. I can see how you do it, but I don’t get why. I mean, who cares who I am in the eternal scheme of things? I don’t. Why should you?
25.
Happy to provide you with some levity then.
Do you remember “Annoying Man” from Saturday Night Live? He was kind of like the toothless guy you’ve seen lately standing behind OJ’s layer. Cool customer, actually.
26 and 27. No. I was not an SNL fan. But I think I get the picture, and I gotta say that I kinda like it. :- )

Abrahamson supported a state library website link to a Planned Parenthood teen sex site (teenwire.com).
That makes him a hero to Democrats.
