Conservative Action Council seeking members

I was kind of surprised to see this announcement in my e-mail box, given my previously expressed reservations regarding a conservative version of the MAINstream coalition. But, I cover them, so I’ll certainly cover this:

South Dakota Conservative Action Council Forms

GROUP TO PROMOTE PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS, EDUCATION & SPENDING REFORM, GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY

Pierre, S.D. – November 05, 2007 – South Dakotans looking to protect their rights as property owners, take charge and make a better educational future for their children, keep more of their hard-earned tax dollars and make their government institutions open and trustworthy will have an aggressive new advocate in the South Dakota Conservative Action Council (SD CAC), which announced its formation today from the State Capitol, Pierre.

Calling the organization the “A new voice for conservative reform in South Dakota politics,” Steve Sibson, founding board member of the SD Conservative Action Council, said that the SD CAC would “lend organization and support to the common aims of conservative South Dakotans who feel government needs to be kept in check by citizen activists.”

“You can call it empowering the silent majority, energizing the forgotten middle class or giving a voice to the frustrations of voters who question whether their core conservative interests are being respected,” said Sibson. “The bottom line is that common sense conservative beliefs are prevalent among South Dakota’s citizens, but it takes more to make sure those beliefs translate into sound public policy.”

Our state must guarantee liberty, prosperity and security to its citizens, and we can do better.

The SD CAC’s mission is to advance private property rights, education reform, tax and spending reform and government efficiency and transparency at the federal, state and local level by supporting the electoral, legislative and referendum processes.

“The SD CAC is going to harness and channel the enormous energy that exists in this state for conservative change,” said Lee Breard, State Director SD CAC. “We’re going to raise money, organize volunteers, train activists, target and mobilize voters, run ads and do all the things a modern grassroots organization can do to make South Dakota better.”

For more information, please contact Lee Breard at (605) 430-7629.

They do have a website up at http://sdconservativeactioncouncil.com, which you can look at, but there’s not a lot of meat to it just yet.

As I’ve said before, this is a tough one for me. To their credit, I certainly certainly agree with the conservative bent. Much more so than what the MAINstreamers represent. But that also takes us back to what the MAINstream coalition represented – a division of the GOP.

I didn’t like what the MAINstreamers did when they divided the GOP. And I consider what they did as poor justification for conservatives to divide up the party in a similar manner.

As my dearly departed mother always tried to impress upon me – we should be better than those we criticize.

What else can I tell you about this group being a bad idea? FOr starters, we also have a quote from Steve Sibson. Steve notes that “the SD CAC would lend organization and support to the common aims of conservative South Dakotans who feel government needs to be kept in check by citizen activists.”

Somehow when I think organization and support, an image of Steve Sibson is not what enters into my mind.

As the a founding member of the MAINstream coalition, Stan Adelstein spent some of his time calling people extremists because they disagreed with what he said. And as far as the SDCAC is concerned, apparently they’re putting up Steve Sibson in response. Who will of course act with equal sibbility. (err… civility).

You know – I’ll leave Stan and Steve to divide up the turf among liberals and conservatives.

And when the smoke clears, I’m going to vote for the Republican. Because that’s what matters to me.

*UPDATE*

Yes, Steve took the bait. He’s too easy. I’m waiting for him to change his name to Makita, because he’s such a tool. And see… I told you Steve’s organization was just like the MAINstreamers….

Heh. Silly Morph amusement this AM courtesy of Squirlz Morph. Photos from Mt. Blogmore.

(And BTW, apparently it still burns Sibby that people on both sides of the aisle found when SDBWM skewered him, it was hilarious.)

PP – I’m shocked that you continue to make statements like “And when the smoke clears, I’m going to vote for the Republican. Because that’s what matters to me.”
It doesn’t matter if you agree with the candidate, it doesn’t matter if the candidate is a person of character it doesn’t even matter if the candidate is capable of holding the office they are running for, if they have an R behind their name they can count on a vote from PP. That is just ignorant. People who put the party affiliation of a candidate above everything else are just lazy voters.

Anon, did you ever think that’s why we have primaries? We separate the wheat from the chaff.

Pat,
Thanks for the coverage. The SD CAC was not formed to become the counter to the MAINstream, we formed to bring important issues to the forefront of conversation. As you can see we are not focusing on social issues; we are focused on being the limited government leader in SD. We are non-partisan and issue focused. We look forward to continued fair future coverage from this important media outlet. The SD CAC is building a grassroots network across the state and will prove that action trumps politics. Our website will be updated in the coming week, stay tuned.
Fellow Conservative Activists,
If private property rights, education reforms, spending reforms, and open government are important to you please contact the SD CAC. lee.breard@gmail.com 605-430-7629

MAINstream also claimed to be non-partisan and issue focused, and to not be focused on social issues. Just saying.

I heard Lee Breard on the radio this evening – on View Point University and was not at all impressed. The guy didn’t have any understanding of eminent domain jurisprudence – he simply said people should get a chance “sit down with the big corporations.” The Supreme Court has clearly – over a century not just in the Kelo decision – that “public use” has a rather liberal (not political but ‘generous’) interpretation. Eminent Domain is critical for the improvement of the public welfare – from utilities to highways to economic development. This blind disdain for eminent domain is not only foolish but uneducated and ridiculous.

In addition, Lee B didn’t have a clue about what he was advocating when he said the organization was in favor of “competition” in education through vouchers – before they took a commercial break so Lee could either review his notes or call a lifeline (who wants to be a millionaire reference) he could not distinguish his “voucher” idea from South Dakota’s open enrollment laws.

I’m sorry, but give me a break. While I’m not as rabidly anti-disagreements in the SD GOP has PP is, I would like to see intelligent and educated discussion – not some splinter group without a clue. It makes everyone look foolish.

point of order, PWT…

I’m not anti-disagreement. Heck, I’m happy to spark them.

BUT, I don’t think disagreeing and going over to play in a different corner is productive. I’d rather fight it out to the point where one party faction wins, loses, or we agree we can’t agree… and we move on.

I heard Breard on the Radio as well. Where’d he get that accent?

I think a more honest name for the organization that would appeal to the same membership would be the Gun Nut Xenophobe Action Couple. Truly, what these guys believe is all over the map. Makes one nostalligic for the John Bircher’s.

Freedom, prosperity and security eh?

Does that include secular humanist, anti-American, pro-choice, commie people like me Steve? How about citizens who are homosexual? How about immigrants in South Dakota? How about those who believe in Allah?

Steve must support gay rights and women’s rights. Glad he’s seen the light in that respect.

PP,

Quit picking on Sibby. He’s had a very difficult time of late. I heard his house was burnt to the ground, and he lost all his belongings. His computer, his clothes (obviously), and his most prized possessions – his books.

Yes, Sibby is especially cranky because he lost his entire collection of books in the fire.

And some of them weren’t even colored yet.

pdq, that’s silly. Sobby wasn’t mad about a fire destroying his books.

Sobby was mad because his beloved computer broke down, and it took him six hours to fix it. Why? Because the clerk at Walmart wouldn’t put the batteries back in his See-and-Say for him.

Take your paws off of me you damn dirty secular humanists.

Do you have a link to the Skewering?

Your comments regarding the use of eminent domain demonstrate the very problem that needs to be addressed in it’s abuse by liberal judges. Eminent domain has it’s place and was meant to be used for “public use”. not public good, not economic developement, not public welfare. To support that agenda and call anyone that doesn’t uneducated and foolish is truly troubling.
When we reach the point that local governments can take private property any time for any reason, we will then start to understand what the “original intent” of the framers of the constitutuion really was.
Fortunately for South Dakota we still have a conservative Supreme Court that still recognizes the importance of property rights, and a state legislature that has taken steps to protect those rights.

Why are we piling on Sibby? He may make a mistake once in a while, unlike the rest of us, but his heart is in the right place. He truely cares about our country and the sharp left turn it has taken. He has absolutely NOTHING in common with Adelstein and the leftists in the MAINstream. I’d much rather have the our state headed in Sibby’s direction than traveling down the left side of the road with Stan.

Adelstein – “Let’s take our toys away from conservative extremists, and go play over here.”

Sibby – “Let’s take our toys away from liberal extremists, and go play over here.”

Republicans – “What happened to our party? Everyone went away.”

#15 – Sibby is EXACTLY like Adelstein in his rhetoric and what he does. He even has the same bad beard.

Maybe if those jerks would quit trying to ruin the party, we could get some Republicans elected. Unless Sibby’s goal is to put Democrats in charge, just like his threat to be a spoiler in the District 20 race.

I think that you and South Dakota Mac have it right, these two guys are a joke. Sadly Conservatives are going to be the punch line

Mr. Powers, stop picking on Steve. You are dividing our Grand Ol’ Party with your caving in to the Democrats (Fleming and Epp) and moderate extremists by pandering to them. Let them rot!

If we don’t stand straight, loyal and strong for family based, Christian conservative values, we will keep caving in until Kate Looby and the homosexuals are in control of our party.

That’s why I say give them the boot. That’s why Steven won’t give up. I’m proud of Steven’s work for SDCAC. It’s the right mission and he’s the right guy for the job. We should rally around him instead of these abortion lovers at the MAINstream coalition.

We got a choice. Voters deserve one too. The war is coming and we need to pick sides and stick to it. Stay the course with OUR values and you’ll do more to help Republican candidates stay in control than anything.

P.S. – I like the way Larry Rhoden sounds here. I hope he isn’t one of those former Democrats who switch their public views to get elected. Was he ever a Democrat? If not, I’d like to see us consider the GOP ticket of Bill Napoli and Larry Rhoden for 2010.

From the press release:

“The SD CAC is going to harness and channel the enormous energy that exists in this state for conservative change,” said Lee Breard, State Director SD CAC. “We’re going to raise money, organize volunteers, train activists, target and mobilize voters, run ads and do all the things a modern grassroots organization can do to make South Dakota better.”

As Bruce Whalen’s campaign manager, Lee Breard forgot to “raise money, organize volunteers, train activists, target and mobilize voters, run ads and do all the things a modern grassroots organization can do…” The campaign Breard ran made Jan Berkhout’s campaign and Jeff Moser’s campaign seem like Lee Atwater was at the helm.

So long as Lee is in charge (with Sibby as their public face), this groups will accomplish nothing. It’s too bad. I would love to support an organization committed to conservative principles in SD. But Lee Breard couldn’t manage Sibby out of a paper bag (and he proved that in 2006).

Why couldn’t they find anyone qualified to run the organization?

anon#20- maybe Bruce was unmanagable and probably impossible to sell to big donors. I thought the campaing did ok considering the fact that they raised and spent less than $150K

The Old Coot,

A road paved by Sibby leads to hell.

Kate Looby and her cronies are lunatics who currently run the conservative asylum.

Who the hell is Jan Berkhout?

21.

Patrick Davis was my paid political advisor. He said I held my end of the bargain up for the campaign plan he prepared.

It is a good indication that something is wrong when volunteers call campaign offices and are turned away. By the time we knew this was frequently happening it was too late.
