Kephart complains that Dykstra is too conservative. But is his challenge is that he’s too liberal?
US Senate Candidate Sam Kephart had an interview with Tony Mangan at KCCR Radio recently where he points a finger at US Senate Candidate Joel Dykstra, and says that he’s “too conservative to get elected.” But then turns around and admits that he’s got his own problems:
Kephart says his big challenge will be winning the June Republican primary where traditionally the most conservative Republicans vote.
To get his name out to more people, Kephart plans to do more media, marketing and internet efforts. One of those will be an internet radio show called “PointBlank”, which he says will go beyond the campaign and will include a variety of guests.
Sam is right that his challenge is going to be the primary, especially if his tactic is going to be painting his opponent as “too conservative.” Obviously he has studied South Dakota History. If all things in the primary campaign are equal, it is usually the most conservative candidate who wins.
But he’s ignoring a basic tenet – the conservative voting block in the GOP doesn’t really respond well to having their viewpoints painted as being negative. Right now, the conservatives in the party are somewhat napping. But poke at them enough, and you’ll awaken a sleeping tiger, as others have found out before.

Kephart is a legend in his own mind. A California carpetbagger who probably moved here because he knows pretty much anybody can run for pretty much anything in SD. Come on, people. Can’t we do better than Kephart, or Dykstra, for that matter? Neither impresses me.
How about Warren Buffett? He’d be a great GOP Senate Candidate. He’s a really rich business man. Only catch is he’s FOR repealing the estate tax. His idea of CEOs shouldn’t pay less then their secretaries is out of whack with the GOP so maybe he’d be a bad choice for South Dakota conservatives.
Please GOP bring on the most conservative candidate you can find. We need another Char Haar.
PP- When I read that on the KELO website, I thought the exact same thing. I could not believe that he was saying that in South Dakota. Dykstra is not that conservative, especially compared to many others that he has served with during his tenure in the legislature.
I had the opportunity to listen to Sam and was not impressed by what he had to say. I think that he may be out of touch with the South Dakota community.

Are you serious? Not in touch with the South Dakota community. Wow. I can’t believe you feel that way. Sam has more innovative ideas of his own than Dykstra does. Ideas that were well thought out, and already have a plan for success. Joel has the same old boring vision of every politician. Kephart has plans for the state of South Dakota and Black Hills Areas to make it better. Kephart answers the questions without hesitation and doesn’t give individuals the feeling that he’s beating around the bush like Dykstra. So what do you mean he may be out of touch with the South Dakota community. If you vote Dykstra, you vote for just another politician who will just sit there and do nothing but enjoy his couple of years forgetting to give you want you want. I will vote for Kephart because he will challenge D.C. and be straight with you.
5. Sam er I mean Adam,
You have got to be kidding. What issues are you talking about? Go to Kepharts page and its just asking for money. Listen to Sam speak and he rambles on about Thelma and Louise. If you saw him at the GOP convention you saw a pro-life candidate. If you have listened to to him campaigning he is against the war in Iraq.
If you want to see issues go to:

#4 is correct, Sam is not in touch with South Dakota. Sam is a nice guy but he is definately not on the RIGHT side of the issues.
One more thing, I am tired of out-of-state people moving here and deciding that all of South Dakota needs to be fixed. You see it year in and year out. The funny thing is they are usually from one of the coasts and always RINOs.
If South Dakota is so bad move back to California.
I recently had the pleasure to sit down with Sam at a local eating establishment while he was in Aberdeen speaking to college kids. The personality and down right honesty of Mr. Kephart is unbeatable.
His stance on the issues is anything but liberal, and the people that are making these assumptions have little to go by. I would encourage anyone to listen to Sam speak and ask him questions about what’s good for the country and the state of South Dakota. Not only will you be impressed and like what you hear, you will also realize the Joel is another politician that thinks it is his right to be in the Senate, even though he has little to no record to stand on.
Must be pretty tough for Joel, answering all those pesky questions about SD issues when he can’t go to Rhoden or the Governors staffers on how he should answer.
5, 6, 7 whatever. In case you haven’t noticed, the mad dog syndrome has permiated this website. It’s one of the reasons I show up here. Just to see if I can help in some small way.
Because, hey, republicans are good people too, you know?
Check it out. But hang tough.
The ending moments are the over the top best
I promise:
The problem is Joel is a talking points Republican that wants to manage DC politics. He will be a standard reliable vote for the GOP national agenda and will bring home the standard expected pork that Thune already brings home. But wink, wink, Democrats don’t make us feel guilty (so we prefer them in DC).
We don’t hear Joel’s plan for the most pressing economic issue facing South Dakota today and years to come. The issue is having the poorest counties in the United States right here in South Dakota. Even Thune doesn’t know how to tackle this issue. However he is the most capable of drafting feasible solutions if it weren’t for the judge and jury attitude of certain of his staff toward this issue.
If we want to reverse the exodus from South Dakota “Indian Country” will need to replace big government with private business. And farmers shouldn’t have to wait to see what to plant according to big government programming.
The greatest divide between wealth and poverty is here in South Dakota but it is the best kept secret. How this got this way is all written in English and kept in US records.
We will settle for the status quo of accepting our role as a welfare state. The standard federal redistribution of wealth in exchange for votes will make sure of that.

It doesn’t matter what he says now. I won’t vote for him! Party leadership had the same attitude last year. It gave up on conservative candidates too.
This isn’t Saddam’s Iraq where 20 percent of the his people controlled the rest.
The RINO’s will not control the rest of us.
