Raising taxes AND expanding government. All in the same piece of legislation.

You know, I hate this part.

What part am I talking about? The part where I have to give a fellow Republican a hard time because they feel that people aren’t being taxed enough, or that they don’t have enough government.

Tonight’s recipients of a mild tongue lashing? Senator Dempster and those who signed on to sponsor his terrible bill; Senator Duenwald and Representatives Kirkeby and Van Etten. And it’s all as a result of Senate Bill 61 – An Act to increase the tax on alcoholic beverages, to dedicate the revenue from such tax increase, to create the South Dakota Teen Court Commission, and to create the South Dakota Commission on Equal Access to Our Courts.

The thing is, I know at least one or two people on this list. And they’re not bad people. But what in the world has gotten into them that they think we need this? Why would they think we don’t pay enough in taxes? If they’re feeling guilty about it, they’re welcome to pay more. But they shouldn’t take their guilt out on the rest of us.

The rest of the attempt to set up two state boards, “expanding government by government taking over the role of the teen court association”, and “setting up some other nonsense?” That’s great – a successfully and independently organized group to help troubled kids. And as opposed to government letting them do their thing – they have to take it over. Great – just great.

Raising taxes and expanding government – bad. Deferring this matter to the 36th day – good.

The successful moderate movement in the republican party may be the key to democratic success in 2008.

Democrats, you can’t possibly need any more campaign fodder than what the republican taxers are providing, can you?

If I read the bill correctly it is a tax increase of 447% Seriously 447%

good point, #1. this kind of big-government republicanism is hurting the party and sinking our state.

I don’t mind telling any party member to quit wasting my money.

What do you not understand about “NO NEW TAXES.”

Remember we have elections coming up and I hope all tax and spenders get voted out of office!

It’s easy to label something a new tax and say no to it. It’s much less easy to find funding for our juvenile and criminal justice systems – which now operate almost solely on the backs of county-level property tax payers. However, I’m not sure how difficult it should be to look at by far the biggest catalyst for criminal and often juvenile problems, alcohol, and conclude that its users should pay more for curative juvenile diversion programs, adult jails, etc. than our teetotalers.

How do I make a dictionary search of “Adelstein Republican” link back to this post?

Speaking of Stan, he said something of actual use to PP the other day. When PP is on TV, he should wear a looser tie. Stan said the outfit the other night accentuated his jowls too much.
