He’s Baaaack……
It takes a lot of ads to spend 100k in a legislative race. And it looks like Stan is getting an early start.

Personally, I would rather attend a local cracker barrel with people who are actually legislators. It makes no sense to meet with somebody who doesn’t have a vote and never will again.
Stan is so far over the hill, he thinks he’s starting fresh again. Sorry Stan, you have so much baggage to tote, and dirty deeds to answer for, that your days in Pierre in your gold-plated Cadillac are doomed before you start. What’s the old adage about a fool’s errand…?
This guy is going to rack up so many supporters from his new house on the hill, it actually scares the shit out of me. This guy needs to be stopped, now!
This guy’s ego is bigger than Wisconsin. The only reason he’s running again is to satisfy his personal need to be in control. He thinks using his inheritance from his dear old dad to buy political influence is okay. To the rest of us, it’s a feeble attempt by a tired old man to try to buy respectability. If only he could see how pitifully irrelevant he is to everyone. If he had something positive to offer in office, voters might be able to overlook the personal flaws. But he is nothing but a hallow shell, desperately trying to buy salvation. Learn to flip a burger while you’re at McDonald’s, Stan. That’s the best job you can get from this silliness.
I wish PP would run. But since he is not in Dist 32, we’ll settle for him being an east river senator instead.
Bruce Allen –
Because I don’t want to run. I just want to bang on these drums all day…
(apologies to Todd Rundgren)
Seriously Bruce, I’ve been an political activist in the GOP for 20 years now, and I have run for office before. And I made every mistake I had told people not to do, and learned a tough lesson for the next time. Why?
Political campaign workers sometimes suck as candidates because we don’t like to let go of the reigns, and let someone else do that cool & fun campaign type stuff, while we perform in the role of candidate.
If it gives you any comfort on this cold winter day, for your info, even though my wife and I just had kid #7, I actually had been giving it very serious consideration and even had my better half’s permission.
BUT.. in the last 10 months, I started two jobs (managing a non-profit and selling Real Estate), so that gives me two employers I’d have to clear it through.
PLUS, I actually like my incumbent legislators. They’ve been pretty decent to me on helping me with one of my pet issues (reforming the SD Restitution system), and I don’t have any huge beef with them, aside from signing onto an occasional nanny state bill. Why would I run solely for the sake of running? That’s just egotism.
As opposed to the family and job related headaches, and the fact I don’t have a good reason to run against my incumbents, I’d rather put my energy towards helping good people and new candidates who are running for a good reason. Not to mention that I put most available moments towards building my Real Estate business (which would help me pay for my 7 kids).
If you think running for office is such hot stuff, please be my guest, and get your announcement ready. I’m even happy to critique it for you.
But make it after 1:30 today. I’ve got an open House from noon until then.
Stan knows that one of the most emotional, talked about issues in South Dakota is education and following in its coat-tails is teacher pay. This is his way of trying to kennel people in..to get them to band wagon around him. He will try to portray a sensitivity toward these issues. Some will be vulnerable; most will know that he has never “been there, done that.” The meetings, in my opinion, are about him, sucking people in, not about our schools at all.
7 and 12. So why don’t you go to the meeting and tell him that? There’s still an hour left.
Again, always with the presumption of knowing what someone else thinks.
You guys could make a fortune reading people’s minds for them.
#13…it is called upper level thinking skills. I live 9 hours away…no jet at my place! Won’t make it; sorry I won’t get to see you there.
So you’re an Adelstein mind reader from a distance then? Wow. That’s even more impressive. Do you just specialize in Stan, or can you tell me what my next door neighbor is thinking right now as well? Just curious.
Hold on there, Stan, Troy Boy the Perfect is coming to your rescue after the hundreds of anonymous insults you’ve endured here. C’mon Troy. It’s time to cowboy up!
In an effort to stay on subject of the thread, I have absolutely no problem with anyone spending their own money to promote political thought and their own candidacy whether it be George Soros, Mitt Romney or Stan Adelstein. However, I believe that they should disclose the magnitude and nature of their expenditure and always put their name on it.
With regard to some aspersions against Stan on this thread, I don’t think that the references to Stan’s home or age is a fair way to criticize his thoughts or actions. I think it ironic that Pat probably gave Stan free advertising of his listening session at McDonalds. I think that Stan is a smart man whose business acumen makes him over-qualified to flip burgers. I think that Stan has a big ego which is a common and valuable trait for people pursuing political office.
With regard to the general past threads about Stan, I think that any alleged activity or donations to defeat GOP nominees is fair discussion in a primary. I also think that his past work and financial support on behalf of GOP nominees and party over the past 40+ years is fair discussion in a primary.
18. Stan is my friend. He’s also Rapid City’s friend and South Dakota’s friend.
Any other questions, friend?
p.s. …oh yeah, I don’t know what’s in store for literature this year. Time will tell. Watch your mailbox.
“because we don’t like to let go of the reigns”?
PP, after you jumped Sibby for asking you to “here” instead of hear, I’ve got to nail you AGAIN for using “reigns” when you mean to say reins!!
Reigns are the terms during which sovereigns rule. Reins are those leather straps connected to the bit on a bridle that you use to control a horse, to rein the horse in, if you will.
Stan’s money can apparently buy anything, including B. Fleming’s suspect support. Stan has funneled stacks of cash to Mr. Fleming et al. Of course Mr. Fleming is a self-described liberal Dem, so its no wonder he thinks Stan – Mr. RINO himself – is “South Dakota’s friend”. But what has Stan done for SD ? Not much that I can recall. He is simply using his late father’s hard-earned fortune to try to put himself in the limelight. Morris would be embarrassed.
19. He’s not my friend, BF. I had a conversation with AdelHanks one time. It was the first time I had met him. We hadn’t been chatting for 10 seconds when he let it be known that his mission in life is to give money away. Well, that’s just peachy, but you don’t do charitable stuff because you want everybody to know about it. He was a first-class jerk, and it turned me off completely.
To Katie…that’s probably why Bill has so much time to blog. He’s living off Stan’s money. But hey, I’m a capitalist…and business is business. I’m just sayin.’ Although I hate to.
My one time meeting of Adelstein left me much to be desired. He came down asking how our organization could do something for so much less than the state. I offered to let him watch. He said he would. I made arrangements for him. He was a no-show. Then we never heard anything more from him. I figured he was just another politician and forgot about him until I saw his name popping up. I don’t have to worry about voting for him so I figure he is someone else’s problem. I had no sorrow for him when he was defeated. But then again, whether he is elected or not will not change my life any.
26. That’s right, duggersd. If by some miracle he is elected, it won’t change our lives any, thank God. Stan’s ideas on legislation often went nowhere because they are usually unworkable, and because his colleagues pretty much ignored him.
And if anybody want so try and paint Stan as a principled guy, think again. He had a real cute habit of changing his vote at the end of the roll call after he saw which way the wind was blowing. Kinda like Obama voting Present in the Illinois legislature. You don’t know where they REALLY stand.
I have never seen BF at Stan’s big new house on the hill any of the times I’ve been there. So if BF is getting money from Stan, it’s not being doled out there.
However Stan is one of the best friends South Dakota has. Right behind T. Denny.
Check the semi-anonomous dirty work Mr. Flemming has done for his friend Jody Severson, Stan’s behind-the-scenes political advisor. (BF actually admited to the infamous wingnut flyer for Mayor Hanks). Plenty of bucks have – and probably are right now – flowing in their direction.
Dear John,
The only reason you’re still pissed off at BF is that he designed a dam clever mailer and beat them at their own game.
It’s funny how it’s only dirty if it’s the other guy.
There’s a reason that BF gets alot of work, he is dam creative.
PS – John, get over it, the election ended 6 months ago.
33. I hate to disappoint anyone, but the wingnut artwork was created by a kid in the San Francisco Bay area.
I asked his agent for permission to reproduce it because I thought it fit the assignment.
We agreed on a price and there you have it.
Please don’t give me more credit than is due.
Any of you could have done what I did, and would have if you had the assignment and knew how to do your job well.
BF
35. How about giving that same “get over it” advice to your Dem friends who are STILL whining about 2000 and 2004! And by the way, as a REAL Repub capitalist, I’ve got no problem with the fact that AdelHanks is rich enough to afford a big house on a hill, or that BF makes a living by propping up liberals with dam (sic) creative campaign mailings. I don’t even care that lib John Edwards lives in a mansion, or that Al Gore uses more energy in his house in a year than I will in a lifetime. My feeling is, they earned it, and even libs deserve to live it up (while feeling guilty about it at the same time, ha).
I agree that politics is a contest of ideas, and there are a myriad of ways to introduce those ideas. But BF saying he was simply doing his job is disingenuous at best. Admitting to dirty tricks al la Katus over Ellie is sad. I’m glad he can sleep at night, knowing he was just “doing his job”. How pathetic.
37. So a design shop shouldn’t lay out a flyer following a set of given instructions?
And I suppose a TV station shouldn’t run an ad unless they agreed with the content?
You are from what planet again?
And what country on that planet?
I help my clients express their thoughts as per the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
And I make no apology for it.
Your suggestion that I should is what is pathetic.
The point is, Mr. Fleming, that you see nothing wrong with your mean-spirited, win-at-all-costs approach to political advertising. Yes, we know it’s been going on for ages, but does that make it okay ? You seem to be saying that you can grin as you plot with ol Stan and cash your dirty tricks checks. Now that IS pathetic.
PS The only reason TV stations can’t pick and choose which TV ads to air is because Congress had to mandate that if they accept one political ad, they have to accept all. So much for the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
40. So what’s the answer? Should I get a different job? Or just stop doing my job well? Or keep doing it well and hate myself for having to do it?
Believe me, there are lots of ad people who make lots of ads for products they don’t like and would never buy. Do you think they should all have trouble sleeping at night because of it?
What’s your job, by the way? Do you ever do something you wish you didn’t have to do?
And when you get paid for it, do you feel crummy?
Give me a break.
40. p.s.
Newspapers can refuse to run any ad they so choose, and printers refuse to print it. Same with websites. Broadcast media also has some discretion in the matter, as do outdoor advertising companies.
My point is, if you worked for one of those companies, and they ran or printed an ad you didn’t care for, but you had to put it on the air or in the paper or in the mail or up on line anyway, would you quit your job?
Or just go to confession? Or what?

so will he be unopposed?
