Dick Brown trying to make a comeback?

Here’s a curve ball in the legislative races that few people, if anyone, had been expecting.

In today’s Rapid City Journal, former Sioux Falls State Representative Dick Brown is trying to ‘go west river’ as he makes an announcement that he too is a candidate for the legislature in the already crowded District 30 race for the two open House seats being vacated by “the Gordo twins.”

Brown, 63, is a former Republican state representative from Sioux Falls and a current member of the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Commission. He and his wife, Sue, moved from Sioux Falls last spring. They live on 10 acres outside of Custer.

and…

“I think the fundamental issues are the same out here as they are in Sioux Falls, or in Chamberlain or Dell Rapids,” Brown said Friday.

Brown served as chairman of the House Education Committee for four years, chairman of the House Taxation Committee and was a member of the House State Affairs Committee for five years. He assisted in drafting the original school-aid formula and property-tax relief legislation passed into law during the 1995 legislative session.

Read it all here. Can a Sioux Falls legislator successfully run in District 30? Or are they going to think that’s like a Texan eating salsa made in New York City?

And, we add Dick’s name to the already crowded field:

District 30 Republican Don Young
District 30 Republican Galen Niederwerder
District 30 Republican Lance Russell
District 30 Republican Mike Verchio
District 30 Republican Dick Brown

Simple answer: yes. Dick knows everybody out there and is a classic retail campaigner. He deftly helped mediate some of the issues between GFP Sec. Cooper and west river landowners. They know and respect respect him. Will that turn in to votes? We’ll see.

It’s entirely possible that Dick is going to take one of those two open seats. Aside from Dick, Lance Russell is the only one with any significant campaign experience.

Two vets of the campaign trail and three newcomers? I’m going to give an early advantage to the vets.

does he lean too far to the left to appeal to voters, there?

Lex,

Brown is to “liberal” for the district only if he supports big government intrusion into the private behavior of individuals (like you).

Referred Law 6, for example, lost HUGE in Custer County with 1341 Yes votes (34%) and 2578 No votes(66%). That’s Herseth/Whalen territory. Even your gay marriage amendment lost in Custer County.

The most recent country registration numbers show that 60% of the country is Republican, versus only 24% Democratic, there were an awful lot of Republicans who voted against the abortion ban and against the gay marriage amendment.

If your contention is that Brown is too liberal for Custer County, you might want to take a closer look at what the conservative voters out there define as conservative. They seem to have a different definition than guys like you that want an activist government on religious issues…

Contgrats to Dick, He will make a great Represenative. At least there is one Credible person running for Dist. 30.

I think most west river voters think Sioux Falls has more than enough legislators in Pierre already.

There aren’t too many landowners who are thrilled with anything Game, Fish and Parks has done in recent memory. This guy sounds a little too liberal for a west river primary.

You go Girl… I love carpetbaggers like Hillary Clinton.

okay 12:07, it was just a question. maybe that district is, indeed, liberal enough to elect someone like brown. i won’t argue with you.

Brown (Dick) is amazingly arrogant, wickedly wealthy and legendarily liberal. He’s right at home on the GF&P Commission, and he is undoubtedly on the short list for the Board of Regents. A legislator from Dist. 30 though? Not likely. Especially if they get to know him.

10:56 is an amazingly awesome aliterater, although angry arrogant attacks are almost always annoying.

What’s next, 10:56, you gonna throw down some onomatopoeias? Maybe get crazy with some homonyms?
