Thumbs up or Thumbs down from Kirby on Monday?

No Gravatar

There was word posted here on my blog, and as initially confirmed through another source that supposedly Steve Kirby will be making an announcement on Monday morning at 10 AM at the downtown Sioux Falls Holiday Inn.

I don’t have anything first hand yet (to see if it’s worth driving down to cover it), but as I know more, you’ll know more.

If it is actually an announcement, it could go either way. The Democrat smear machine is in full gear in anticipation of an announcement, but any announcement is on Kirby’s time line, and not theirs.

Stay tuned.

Come on, no one schedules a press conference to announce that they are not running for something.

He’s in.

And you guys won’t be able to hide behind the “private citizen” label anymore.

Your’e wrong about that, 4:16. RINO Senator Chuck Hagel did just that a number of times..called a press conference to announce he would make an annonuncement…then the announcement was that he’s not running for anything. And the lib media hung on every word and covered each non-announcement.

You’re right, we won’t be able to “hide behind the private citizen label” anymore. Because SD voters think its perfectly fine to stalk an announced political candidate…

The Big Race is on people!!! get your popcorn

there are Kirby petition people going around the west side of Sioux Falls

will the poodles be in the announcement photo?

Timmy is shaking in his boots or he wouldn’t have “masked” men following Kirby around. I hope Tim gets what he deserves: RETIREMENT!

Iggy you bring the popcorn, I’ll bring the refreshments.

Fifty point to go to tie Johnson!

I think he has a legitimate shot to win… the primary.

But then again, I thought that in 2002 as well.

Kirby Says Voters Should Pay Attention To Health Matters in GOP Race
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Questions about former Gov. Bill Janklow’s health means voters deserve closer scrutiny of lieutenant governor candidates in the race for the Republican nomination for governor, Lt. Gov. Steve Kirby said.

But Janklow, who faces Gov. Walter D. Miller in the June 7 primary, dismissed Kirby’s comments about his health as “ridiculous” and said the accusations show the Miller campaign is in trouble.

“The Miller-Kirby campaign has been spreading this all over the state,” Janklow said. “It tells me when people are behind and they have no issues they can discuss with the people, they resort to this.

“As for Steve Kirby, who talks about all of his religious affiliations, he should know better than to bear false witness against his neighbor,” said Janklow.

“People are saying Bill’s health has never been worse,” Kirby said Saturday. He said he has no evidence about Janklow’s health other than personal observations…

First, Clyde: Kirby’s dogs are Newfoundland Sheep dogs (newfies) They’re basically black St. Bernards. You dems own pets? If so, what’s the problem?

Second, Anonymous (#?): Apparently Janklow’s health was an issue then as it was 6 years later when he flatted an innocent motorcyclist up by Flandreau.(Ironically, it’s still better than Johnson’s is now) Quoting Janklow on anything related to honesty, integrity or loyalty is flat out a contradiction in terms. I’ve seen first hand and you’ve all witnessed that Janklow said, did and acted anyway he wanted regardless of the consequences and is one of the main reasons that the state GOP is short on leadership. While Jank was King, if anyone in politics wanted to work their way up the ranks, to aspire to greater positions, they were ceremoniously pitched by Janklow. He was never a republican, he was a populist a Janklowite. Where’s he at now??? Representing people AGAINST DM&E and against SD businesses. He’s a paid/unpaid moron who will do anything to keep in the limelight. He originally was speaking for the Mayo Clinic on the DM&E issue, but I heard they canned him.

You don’t want Kirby, then go find a more viable candidate. You got 19 days. I’m waiting…… If you want him then get behind him and help. Or just be content with Johnson, who is about as effective as anyone who’s had a major brain injury. 90th out of 100 Senators and bombing….

So, 4:53, you saying Kirby should’a been a witness for Janklow’s “my health made me run the sign” defense?

To the Anonymous 4:16 p.m.:

Just so I have this straight, after he announces will it be ok to stalk a candidate’s home and family for gratuitous purposes and make innuendo attacks with no basis in fact?

To Anonymous 4:45 p.m.:

As a person who worked a short time for Governor Miller, I supported Miller-Kirby and like a lot of people we expressed our displeasure at this attack on Governor Janklow. In my opinion, it hurt their campaign immensely.

Regarding the other advertisements from the 2002 GOP Governor Primary, when Kirby launched his negative attack, I told a person very close to Steve that he would get third place. When Barnett responded in-kind, I supported Mike Rounds.

Steve Kirby has borne a significant price already for those mistakes. If he has learned nothing, Dem’s have nothing to worry about.

But if these attacks possibly meant to goad him into responding in kind do not work, the Dem’s will have done a good job in highlighting that Steve Kirby is going to be a mature, measured effective U.S. Senator.

“A man’s errors are his portals of discovery.” James Joyce

“Things could be worse. Suppose your errors were counted and published every day, like those of a baseball player. ~Author Unknown

I guess I’m glad Steve has the courage to get in the game.

I suppose Democrats in South Dakota will take their marching orders from a Virginia based smear machine.

Good analysis, Troy.

Troy, your support for Kirby is commendable and wise, however, your above comment on the Kirby attacks is factually innaccurate. It was Barnett who started them with the skin stealing stuff that is now the fodder on the Dem websites. Kirby’s attacks, if they were attacks at all were defensive in nature. Barnett also sent people to colorado to take pictures of his house as well as disseminating false information on his investments (remember the cute little plane flying all over the country landing at his supposed out of state investments, the ad that said Kirby exported 190 million dollars and 1 million jobs?) If one were to read one of the last months’ issues of Sioux Falls Business Journal, it rates the top venture capital firms. In ranking Bluestem, it printed that 70% of their investments are in SD.

I’m sure the Johnson camp is swelling with anticipation.

No pun intended.

Duh, nothing like clearing the air. It is good to be reminded from time to time.

Always remember that Tim Johnson started smearing Kirby and spying on his home and doing so to raise money…Tim is a dirty campaigner and his been forever…Tim will throw mud all over

There is word that Kirby has been doing some filming…can others confirm time and place?

Maybe Mark Barnett will endorse Tim Johnson since they have something in common…they are both brain dead

Let’s take a step back. Kirby is a smart, competent guy who fits conservative South Dakota well. Tim always skated by and now he’s simply not functional and performing for the state. So I’m voting to switch to Kirby. No real offense to Tim, but he’s not doing the job

check out the photo of Clinton hack Paul Begala at the Johnson rally where Johnson compared Republicans to the Taliban

nice guy that Timmy!

we all need to take a deep breath and read this critical article before the campaign gets along too far and remember how Johnson “won” (stole) his election last time:

Bad Lands, Bad Votes: Putting Tim Johnson over the top, by any means necessary

National Review, Dec 23, 2002 by Byron York

The big-city attorneys were part of a force of 10,000 lawyers deployed nationwide by the Democratic National Committee, ostensibly to ensure that voters’ rights would be protected. But there is compelling evidence to suggest that at least some of the lawyers did just the opposite. According to the testimony of dozens of South Dakotans who worked at the polls, the out-of-state attorneys engaged in illegal electioneering, pressured poll workers to accept questionable ballots, and forced polling places in a heavily Democratic area to stay open for an hour past their previously-announced closing time. In addition, the testimony contains evidence of people being allowed to vote with little or no identification, of incorrectly marked ballots being counted as Democratic votes, of absentee ballots being counted without proper signatures, and, most serious of all, of voters who were paid to cast their ballots for Sen. Johnson.

seriously, read this article, then consider what you think of Johnson:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1282/is_24_54/ai_95056787

from the New York Times, December 15, 2006

Even if Mr. Johnson is unable to vote in January, the Democrats would have a 50-49 majority in the Senate, which would allow them to pass a series of resolutions awarding them chairmanships and majority membership of committees.

Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, appeared before reporters and cameras on Thursday morning and said that he had just visited Mr. Johnson in his room and that “he looked great.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/15/washington/15senate.html?_r=1&ref=politics&oref=slogin

remember that Harry Reid LIED…Johnson was in a coma at that time. He didn’t “look great” but the Democrats were desperate to hang onto power, so Harry Reid lied

Lots of static from the democrats. They’re scared of Kirby. He’ll run circles around Tim Johnson and they know it.

Kirby for Senate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Napalm, you probably didn’t know that some voters had “special” escorts into the booth to help them “properly” vote. The same thing with Daschle v Thune.

In fact the Kerry and Daschle campaigns and the Democrat party surrogates enjoyed campaigning inside the polling area until I challenged poll workers to stop the illegal activity.

And…

A Democrat surrogate called Four Directions set up a copy machine inside the polling area (about thirty feet from the ballot desk) and was giving voters instructions on how to vote.

And…

Voters would stop by the GOP office asking if it was the place that paid for votes. They were looking for Daschle and the Democrat office.

And…

My cousin spoke to me about how she worked for the Democratic Party as a paid head hunter and was given cash to pay voters. She didn’t see anything wrong until my attorney partner helped her thinking.

I can go on.

This is shaping up as a great race for Rounds to win. Kirby and Johnson will beat each other up. Rounds will say “Can’t we just get along” and slip in.

Here’s my bad attempt at injecting a little humor. I’ve updated an Elvis classic: Suspicious Minds (from the dem’s perspective)

Kirby’s caught in a trap
He can’t walk out
Because Blogs Love him too much baby

Why can’t Blogs see
What we’re not doing to Steve
When you don’t believe a word Tim says?

Tim can’t go on forever
With suspicious minds
And Tim can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds

So, if a politician I know
Drops by to say hello
Would Blogs still see suspicion in Tim’s eyes?

Here we go again
Asking where Tim’s been
You can’t see his tears are real
He’s crying

Tim can’t go on forever
With suspicious minds
And Tim can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds

Oh let our Senator survive
Or dry the tears from Tim’s eyes
Let’s don’t let a good thing die

When honey, you know
Tim’s never lied to you
Mmmm yeah, yeah

Tim Johnson looks and sounds terrible. I saw him in Pierre. It was ridiculous. He needs to preserve what little dignity he has left and retire

Johnson is like Castro…hanging on way too long, much longer than one’s health would indicate, much longer than a person’s prime

oh, and they are both socialists too

Napalm: I read that article on voter fraud and it was very scary. Tim Johnson is another version of Castro (to keep the string alive) when it comes to rigging elections

The Democrat liberal socialists are absolutely APOPLECTIC over Kirby running against TJ.

Pun intended!

blogger tgrindadams is bill fleming?

Quite Apparently, Jared forget his medication today.

Kirby better be in. I thought Dykstra but NO!!! He is in it or himself. I thought Kephart. NO he’s odd and not Ron Paul odd/cool just odd.
If Kirby gets in the nomination is his and we’ve got ourselves a race in the general.

If not and we have to put up with DYKSTRA – Johnson might aswell run unopossed!

Does anyone else think Rounds is a terrible Governor and regret voting for him?

It’s disgusting that he doesn’t do anything to support our county GOP. He’s letting us wither away.

I should have voted anyone but Rounds!

Daschle Dead Zone | Mar 7, 2008 2:02 am | Reply

Rounds Sucks! Wish he’s run for senate so we could get a class act like Daugaard.

I’m looking forward to 2010.

I agree if Rounds and Thune would get their butts out and support the lower levels we’d be one heck of a party.

Too bad Thune is out with Mac so much and not in SD igniting Kirby’s base.

Kirby your the man!!!

I love Thune and am mixed on Rounds but they do need to show more gratitude to the local parties.

Niether would be anywhere without all of us.

I hope Kirby doesn’t lose site of that after he takes the gold.

tgindadams,

And if he doesn’t, it will be illuminating. “Revenge is often like biting a dog because the dog bit you.” Austin O’Malley

He has no need to crawl into the pig pen.

This did prove to be true. Didn’t Bill Janklow claim it was his diabetes that caused him to have that accident?

I thought that it was an allergic reaction to stop signs…

DUH, you’ve contributed some biting yet rather entertaining comments, and are obviously close to the Kirby camp. Newfoundland Sheepdogs? Really? Do you get to dogsit when Steve’s out jetting around? I don’t drive that part of town anymore but last I knew Steve lived off a fairly well traveled street in west central SF, and with a passing glance you could see if his porsche or whatever was in his driveway. I think it a bad move what the dems have done with steve unannounced, but the point being you don’t have to stalk him to see if he uses a grooming service. Maybe some junior staffers have been watching him, I don’t know. Johnson definitely has some issues, I don’t know that I’m sold on his return, and Steve presents some problems if he enters. Each will at times play a contestant on “Who’s the victim now?” What makes Stevo qualified? Because he can self fund, according the RNC? Because he’s increased his family’s wealth? Because west river Walter Dale picked a east river guy with money and ties? Because he did a half-ass job touting the conservative line on First Monday? Because he served up Pierre to Smiling Mike? Steve’s going to have to show me he is more than God’s gift to country clubs to gain my attention. I’m sure he eats well enough he can do without lunches in the Senate dining room. He’s got to overcome the perception some carry that he won’t just be a self-interested seat warmer. When he can articulate his plans for improving the current dismal state of affairs that is the GW experiment, I’ll give him a listen. Until then, your buzzing around like captain of the flying monkeys isn’t doing him any good.

Once again the repubs are going to serve up another born again freak who believes the earth is 6k years old. Way to go!

Anooner 10:32. “captain of the flying monkeys” I like that one. Nonetheless, good points other than your constant oftentimes subliminal references to his wealth which are irrelevant, but obviously an issue for some reason. The only way to see kirby’s qualifications is to first witness his immense and long term dedication and loyalty to the Rep. party. Who else is there? Frankly, no one.

It is also fair to check his record as Lt. Gov., his business successes in creating jobs and wealth for those associated with him and promoting SD and his ability to convey his beliefs and the many commitees and state boards that he’s served on. Everyone has an agenda, problem is, there’s NOTHING there with Johnson, never will be. Is Kirby being faulted for being persistent in his attempts to serve this state? I guess and I can’t figure out that one.

Kirby never served up the office to “smiling” Rounds, the voters couldn’t see through the negative b.s put out by Barnett. It’s the state’s loss. 6 years of unbalanced budgets, airplane trips for the Rounds clan, no vision and now $2 million less in HP funds. I guess that cuts the Pierre to RC trip down about an hour.

That brings up another point, who really is qualified??? I suppose that first criteria on the list is the ability to communicate and advocate for your ideas. Something Johnson can no longer do.

12:10, a most unchristian comment. Just whose side is God on in this one anyway?

Tgrindadams – I don’t believe DUH is Stevo, but I wouldn’t be suprised if it is one of his newphews. I understand a couple of them are a little brash. It doesn’t really matter to me, but I’ve been wondering also how Steve, if he enters, or anyone is going to play that delicate campaign card about Tim’s fitness. I suppose the R’s will try to engage him in public often, and hope they don’t come off looking like a bully. I prefer a campaign about what a candidate’s vision is, and what he can do, not one about what the opponent can’t. As it stands now, both Stevo and Dykstra are far too “right” to sway this centrist. It’s a bit of a paradox for the Ultra R’s – they need to soften their rhetoric enough to sway some moderates without appearing like they’ve compromised their core principles. Because as we all know, after election it all becomes about re-election. Johnson normally is a very savvy campainer, but I don’t think this first gaffe bodes well, and eventually voters are going to need to know that he is up to the task.

p.s. Dear Troy Jones: can you believe I’ve managed two relatively thoughtful posts that were more than a one or two line zinger?

Duh is not Kirby, never was Kirby, never will be Kirby. Just an informed, open minded republican who can recognize a good deal when he sees one. That an extremely well-connected, successful, likeable and inflential individual wants to be a Senator of the State of South Dakota.

His opposition, two lesser known rep candidates who probably don’t know two people in DC and less individuals with power to change lives in SD. One incumbent demo Senator who neither has the abilities or idealogies to continue representing SD. It’s that simple. If Kirby doesn’t run, Johnson will win and God help this state. With the good chance that we will have a Demo President, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone on our side keeping him in check. If I was his mother, what difference would my points make? None. Actually, I’m one of his dogs waiting for one of Johnson’s henchmen to come into my yard for another picture. WOOF!

We’ll see on Monday whether SD will regain some stature or succumb to being represented by the 90th Senator in the 51st ranked state.
