Powers Wins!!
Woo Woo!! Powers Wins!!
Well, A Powers won. But not me.
My oldest daughter Paige did something totally out of character for her. At 15 pushing 16, she has the sullen teen thing down to a science, and at a moment’s notice can leave my wife and I checking for additional gray hairs after we’ve dealt with the aftermath of whatever her latest episode is. (THANK GOD we’re out of the pink hair phase.)
Anyway, that’s why you could have knocked my wife and I over with a feather when one of her teachers suggested that my largely apathetic and non-involved child run for student council for the Brookings High School Sophomore Class. And she did.
What? My #2 child went after joining and participating in Teenage Republicans with a passion. But #1? Not so interested in politics and civic affairs until recently. But, ok. I’m not complaining. I’m always open for my kids being interested in politics. So, being the busybody dad I am, of course I offered some help.
“Do you want help with t-shirts?” No. “Do you want help with posters? I can….” No. I don’t want to do that. “Would you like some help with your speech.. you know being entertaining and engaging their attention is a good way to…”
DAD LEAVE ME ALONE! I CAN DO THIS MYSELF!
And darned if she didn’t. She couldn’t wait to tell me when I picked her up after school that not only did she win, but she’d beaten out three long time incumbents to the council. She did it, and she did it almost all by herself.
So, tonight I’m a pretty darned proud dad for my daughter doing something I thought was completely outside the box for her. Even better, I hope it was completely outside the box for her. Because it might actually be her way of telling me that she’s edging ever so closely to becoming an independent young adult.
And at the end of the day it leaves me wondering… Does this mean that someday I might need to ask for her advice on running?

Good Job Paige!! And yes, PP, you will soon be asking your daughters for advice on how to run a campaign.
Way to go Paige! Good to see that she can stand on her own two feet. Isn’t that what all parents truly want for their kids.
Congrats Paige…Pat, please pass that on to Paige from me.

Congratulations!
