Sioux City Journal: Send Dykstra to Washington

The Sioux City Journal comes in with a big endorsement for Joel Dykstra from the Southeast corner of the state:

Possessed of international and domestic private-sector experience in energy, agriculture, and economic development, along with multiple terms of service and leadership in the state Legislature, Joel Dykstra offers voters a diverse, impressive background and an accomplished record of achievement.

Today the Journal endorses Dykstra’s candidacy for the U.S. Senate from South Dakota.

Through his three terms in the state House – where he is assistant majority leader – from nearby District 16, we have gotten to know Dykstra. He strikes us as a man of integrity, conservative principles, and intellect who reflects the priorities and values of most South Dakotans and understands the complex challenges facing America.

and…

We will be honest, though. Factored into our endorsement decision in this race were our reservations about whether Johnson’s health will allow him to maintain the schedule and discharge the demanding duties and responsibilities of a United States senator for the next six years at the level South Dakotans need and deserve. That isn’t insensitivity; rather, it’s an honest question about an unfortunate reality that has existed since Johnson underwent emergency brain surgery due to a congenital condition nearly two years ago.

This decision was not altogether easy for us, but a combination of his credentials as a candidate, his position on the important issues of our time and our concerns about

Johnson tipped the scales in favor of Dykstra. South Dakotans would do well to send him from the Statehouse in Pierre to the Capitol in Washington.

Oh, those crazy Iowegians. They’re still NW Iowa, not SE SD right?

You read right folks, straight from Sewer City, an endorsement for the flip-flopper on the bailout and former oil executive Dykstra. Say, can someone tell me how the Republican Karl Mundt managed to remain South Dakota’s Senator in Washington for three years after he suffered a stroke on 11/23/1969? And he didn’t attend any sessions of Congress through the end of his term on 1/3/1973? Anyone?

The Dems will whine like little babies. Tim Johnson is going to get beat and it’s clear because the Dems are getting negative which is a sign they are feeling and seeing the numbers slip.

Speaking of whiners Walt, what’s up with Dykstra calling in the “Swift Boaters” — The Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America? Talk about getting desperate.

Iowa should mind its own business. They have their own kook – Rep. Steve King.

Seems like some of the posters don’t know things work in the south east part of the state. Figures.

Besides the fact that Johnson can not debate on the floor of the senate. AND>>>>>>>>>>>> America is not what it was in 1969! America is not what it was 10 years ago. We need many, many new faces in DC across the board!

Anon @ 6:54 – Hopefully we’ll learn from the past. It wasn’t right in ‘69, and it’s not right now.

Tim has served honorably for our state, but it’s time for him to enjoy retirement. I wish only the best for his continued recovery.

Well, you know what they say IOWA stands for…idiots out walking around.

Tim will win by 20%.

To be completely honest, this isn’t much of an endorsement.

“This decision was not altogether easy for us”

Thus meaning, we really don’t want Joel Dykstra, but we’re concerned about Tim’s health. Which, if the Sioux City Journal was paying attention, they would realize is improving more and more each day.

So Dykstra has picked up an endorsement from an out-of-state newspaper that really said they’d rather have Tim, but…

Oh sure, send Dykstra up there. How long will it take him to achieve the level of respect and effectiveness of Daschle and Johnson? 5 years? 10 years? Will we be shooting ourselves in the foot because we are pissed at Thompson at the moment?

Thune ain’t done much for SD since he’s been in office and Bush’s ear will no longer be available for Thune to whisper sweet nothings on pork for South Dakota.

Correction:

That should be Johnson, not Thompson in my post above.

Patti, Thune has a highly favorable rating from most SD’ans, except certain Dems that are still “pissed” (your word, not mine) that he dared to beat the saintly Daschle. News flash, everyone, even Daschle and Johnson, were once the newcomers on the Hill. And they seemed to work out fine in your opinion and the opinion of many others. If we followed your line of reasoning, there would no reason for elections as we would just simply keep the same guys forever.

Candidates stand for election every so many years, and it is their responsibility to campaign fairly with an opponent. Johnson has not done this, has played the victim with anyone who dares criticize him, and this is not fair to Dykstra or to the voters of SD. If the shoe were on the other foot this election, you would be head of the line screaming unfair.

springer,

Where has Johnson played ‘victim’? I don’t believe I’ve seen it anywhere. Interesting that Republicans are whining about ‘not playing fair’. When has fairness ever mattered to Republicans?
