Larry Diedrich is in the hunt for 2010? Naaahh….
Angie over at Dakota Women is talking about the field for 2010, and dropped a name that I hadn’t even heard was approaching the radar:
So I guess that only leaves Lee Schoenbeck, Dennis Daugaard, Dave Knudson, (I’ve heard rumors of) Larry Dietrich, and probably 847 people I’m forgetting who have talked about tossing their hat into the Republican Governor’s race.
Read that here. Larry Diedrich’s name was possibly being bandied about for the GOP Nomination for Governor in 2010?
I keep my ear extremely close to the ground on this stuff, and this wasn’t one I’d heard. Since he last ran for office, Larry’s personal situation has changed a bit, not to mention the fact he’d be coming off of three losses in a row. Unless someone cares to fill me on on where they heard this, and from what circles they originate, I’m a bit of a doubting thomas. Its improbable, but not impossible.
Otherwise, those Republicans who I think we can safely say are in the hunt are Lt. Governor Daugaard who has been running for some time, Brookings Mayor Scott Munsterman who has formed an exploratory effort. and Dave Knudson who is rumored to be speaking with media companies. Lee Schoenbeck (who has been polling strongly as informal benchmarks test the field) is a likely contender. Ken Knuppe had material printed up and distributed announcing his bid for governor, but has otherwise been quiet about it.
And there are the others out there who are rumored to have an interest in the contest, such as Chris Nelson and Gary Hanson, but niether have they been directly asked, nor pointed out their intent to run.
So, does anyone have a credible source on Larry considering the race? And are there any other serious GOP candidates who I’m overlooking?

My girlfriend’s brother’s best friend’s cousin heard it at Baskin Robbins 32 Flavors that former U.S. Senator James Abdnor is going to run for Mayor of Sioux Falls in 2010.

Just so you know, PP, this came out of a conversation I had with a legislative candidate the week before the election. I’m not saying it’s likely…just passing along the word on the street.
C’mon Todd, everyone knows the best place to hear political gossip is either at Black Sheep or Michelle’s coffee in SF.
Jim might be in his mid-80’s and showing some signs of it. But, the old legislator is still going strong. This summer I stopped by Jim’s apt. After doing what I’d come for, I noticed a “book” that I well recognized from my days as his aid. It turned out to be the 2008 Farm Bill. From front to back, Jim had yellow stickies and on the pages various comments. He had read from the entire 1,000 page legislation and had alot of comments. Some positive and some negative. I asked about them and we ended up talking for another hour. It was almost as if we were back in D.C. and in his office.
Because Jim Abdnor had a speech defect that worsened as the day went on or he got tired, most people’s perception of him is that he was a good guy and hard worker but not that bright. Few people ever got to really grasp his mental acuity which was world class.
P.S. I’ll give you an Abdnor secret. Part of his reporite (I know it is mispelled) was that he played the “country hick” to his advantage. He always told me, “It is better to be underestimated than overestimated. They never see you coming until it is too late.”
P.S. While not making a statement about the merits of Daschle (who I think will do a good job), what everyone is dismissing is that Obama criticized McCain mercilessly for lobbyists that were campaign advisors and promised that NO lobbyists would be in his administration. Where is the hew and cry similar to “Read my lips”? The guy can’t even wait until he is inaugurated to start breaking campaign promises.
FYI: I thought the promise was stupid. Like his tax plan, his Iraq plan, his trillion dollars of new spending, and many others. So far, he has back-tracked on most of what he promised. Not that I’m not pleased but I do have some disagreement.
I’m just surprised that Dakota Women are talking about Republican candidates without making snarky and snide remarks about them.
As for Dakota Women, it could change if certain people try to run, they would not let out all their cards now.
Dito to Troy’s comment. Abdnor’s a great guy and sharp.
My grandfather always shared this, (I can’t quote it has been to long) however, if younger people would take the time to listen they could really learn something. Just because someone is older does not mean they don’t know anything, infact it is opposite. Besides there are some cool/kewl older people out there!

First I’ve heard of it too. Seems extremely unlikely. He tried to win his old state senate seat
back and was soundly defeated. Larry’s a nice guy but I’d be shocked if he has even thought of this.
