April 15th is tax day – AND Tea Party Day in Sioux Falls
South Dakota Tax Day Tea Party
April 15th, 2009 – Noon – 1:30pm
Sioux Falls, near Covell Lake @ Terrace Park
The Tea Party protests, in their current form, began in early 2009 when Rick Santelli, the On Air Editor for CNBC, set out on a rant to expose the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress. Specifically, the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and pork filled budget.
During Rick’s rant, he called for a “Chicago Tea Party” where advocates of the free-market system could join in a protest against out of control government spending.
A few days later, grassroots activists and average Joe Americans began organizing what would soon become the Nationwide Chicago Tea Party effort.
On February 27th, an estimated 30,000 Americans took to the street in 40+ cities accross the country in the first nationwide “Tea Party” protest.

People are weary of the massive spending bills passed by Congress and the massive levels of debt being tallied up. I’m glad people are finally fighting back.
Pat:
Argh, Matey Powers, mighten April 15th also be Talk Like A Pirate Day!? Shiver me timbers!

The Tea Party continues to grow!
The website for Sioux Falls area information is http://www.teapartysd.com
If you are Taxed Enough Already put a teabag in an envelope and send it to Washington!
Silent Majority NO MORE–Wake up America –before it is too late!
John, I am not involved with these “idiotic tea parties” but I would like to Thank every one involved. I am sick and tired of paying these high taxes when the Government wastes my money!
I encourage everyone to attend a TEA PARTY!
John, these tea parties aren’t idiotic. You probably would have thought the original tea party was idiotic too.
The gov’t is spending money we don’t have, getting us farther and farther in debt to other countries. Essentially the gov’t is and has been stealing from our kids and grandkids. Funny we haven’t heard anything about the broke SS system lately, isn’t it? They don’t have money to fund that either but probably don’t dare mention that right now. I have a right, actually an obligation, to speak up and be heard, and so does every other taxpayer in the country.
Obama is going to have to fess up and own this mess after awhile. He inherited some from Bush, but the present is all his. He claims he doesn’t want us dependent on foreign nations for oil etc. This is even worse. China owns our debt, essentially owns us lock, stock, and barrel. Which means they can dictate to us, and that frankly scares the ___ out of me that any country could have the means to dictate how we run our own nation.
John, you have a right to do nothing about the bankrupting of our country. But I have a right TO DO something too.
Oh yes, by all means. Draw attention to yourself through the Postmaster General, the postal police and the FBI – all for a stupid stunt. It’s never too late to start your very own investigative file husbanded by the feds. And if you’re not directly involved, perhaps you can merely be an aider and abetter or encourage nefarious behavior in disrupting commerce and the US mail. (If Santelli or these folks had a brain, they’d be dangerous.)
Before you remove the spec from your neighbor’s eye, pull the log that’s stuck in yours. Mike Rounds and the Republicans got their asses bailed out this year because of the Democrats’ stimulus money. What if the money didn’t come? The boobs in the GOP caucus were prepared to increase sales tax 50 percent … and still spend down the money. There is nothing phonier than a Pierre Republican self-proclaimed fiscal conservative.
30,000 protesters in 40 cities? 750 people per protest? Is that just in SD? LOL..let your voice be heard! I’m not sure by who, but keep wasting your time on this important issue that no one cares about…well not enough to show up for anyway…LOL
It’s funny how every fake left-wing protest organized by tax-funded professional “protestors” like ACORN get all the love from the liberal media. but when real people get together to stop the out-of-control welfare state that isn’t “news”
“Democrats’ stimulus money” said Anon 12:27 and there you have in a nutshell the problem. Annon probably believes that statement, but the fact is that it was not the Democrats in Congress’s stimulus money – as Anon said. If they were making those large and foolish expenditures with their monies I would say godspeed to them (on their way to their favorite Chapter 7 bankruptcy attorney). Spending others’ money like you own it and have the right to it, is at the heart of the complaint about the reckless spending. People are entitled to speak out against that – in fact, we should hope they do. In fact, Anon, I think you should be more bipartisan in your description of the ownership of this rechless behavior – I don’t think this is a uniquely Democrat misdeed.
Where were these people during the last 8 years while Bush Jr. squandered the budget surplus he inherited and ran up trillions in debt? This protest is more about sour grapes than any real concern about the budget.
projected surplus that is!
It was called 911 and the war on terror along with spending
money on democrat ideas in the name of bipartisanship.
A lot of good that got you Bushy!
No there was an actual surplus. Then massive tax cuts for the very richest and a war against a country that had nothing to do with 9-11.
Nick is right: There was an actual surplus.
Nick is wrong: The biggest contributor to the deficits was the tech bubble of 2001.
Nick is wrong: The Bush tax cuts reduced taxes for the lower and middle taxes at a greater percentage than for the upper class.
Nick is wrong: The Iraq War (which I opposed) was initiated because Iraq failed to abide by UN resolutions with regard to nuclear proliferation.
More importantly, in two years, the Obama deficit will exceed eight years of George Bush. In eight years, the CBO projects that the Obama budget as currently laid out will double the total US Debt which took 230 years to accummulate.
Troy is going to eat his words, along with all the other clowns drinking the dumbdumb koolaid on the stimulus. Rounds and the legislature spent the stimulus allocation to South Dakota as fast they could. They were fully prepared to raise the state sales tax 50 percent. Obama, the Democrats in Congress plus a few Republican Senators bailed their asses out.
The money is averting a major catastrophe and the only point worth debating is if it was enough money delivered quickly enough. There is no such thing as a fiscal conservative republican in Pierre.
Instead of throwing perfectly good tea into covell lake, just have the tea party at my house. My wife wants us to start drinking less pop, and tea is quite the healthy altenative. And I’m sure my baby daughter would be delighted to have some people who actually have time to have a “tea party” do it in our kitchen. You bring the tea, I will bring the stuffed animals and princess belle disney dresses. Fun for all ages….
Anonymous 5:04: I’m sure enough of my position such that I have the exposure to “eat my words.” Sign your name and I’ll take your challenge. Otherwise, your words mean nothing.
Troy I’m glad you opposed the Iraq War because it was a mistake. Too bad there weren’t any GOP members of Congress that shared your insight. Too bad that so many of my Democratic Congresscritters were so scared of being labeled wimps that they went along with that boondoggle. The money sunk into that rathole would sure be nice to have now. If Saddam was still in power he would keep the Iranians focused on the kook next door. The biggest winners of the Iraq War are the Iranians, they didn’t have to lift a finger and were able to see their biggest enemy overthrown by their second biggest enemy.
5:04: There were five fiscal conservative republicans in Pierre, who voted against Obama and the general appropriations bill. Representatives Cutler, Curd, Peters, Russell and Van Gerpen. Ah, there are a few conservatives out there after all.
And, it’s Talk Like A Pirate Day as well! Argggh, walk the plank, you scurvy socialist Obama! Argghhh!

“During Rick’s rant, he called for a “Chicago Tea Party” where advocates of the free-market system could join in a protest against out of control government spending.”
Was that before or after he told people they should invest in Lehman Brothers? The point is, this man is CLEARLY an expert.
2:07, good point. And the media loved the way the union-and-ACORN sympathizers amassed to harrass private citizens (AIG people at their homes). But when some folks get together to voice their views against the policies of our new government, it’s deemed silly.
Silly is in the eye of the beholder, John. There are MANY people who are fed up with out of control spending. If you are comfortable with the way the gov’t is spending your money, that’s fine. We aren’t. Even the CBO says Obama’s projections are wrong.
Pat: You obviously don’t like my talk like a pirate day jokes. They keep getting removed. Have I been “Newlanded”?
Todd
We have every right to throw tea bags into a lake to protest a stimulus bill that will keep us from spiraling into a depression. Just look at the mess FDR left us when HE did the same thing in the 30’s! HE was so crooked HE got re-elected three times!
One of the few rights we have left after George W Bush gutted the Bill of Rights is the right to free speech – and so we can protest anything Rick Santelli tells us to!
And Santelli should know – he’s a millionaire hedge-fund manager and worked for Drexel Burnham Lambert – so he KNOWS who the losers are! The LOSERS are those people that are LOSING their houses!
We can help those people save their homes or we can throw tea bags into the lake! SO leave us alone! We know what we’re doing!
Although I forget what tea bags have to do with spending – the original Boston Tea party was a bunch of guys that got drunk and threw tea into the Boston Harbor – so that’s what WE’RE gonna do: get drunk and throw tea into the lake!
And YOU SHOULD TOO! Before Obama and the Democrats take away our guns and march us off to their re-education camps and take away our money and make us use Yens or Pesos or something like that.
This is a grass-roots thing done by us free Americans just like it says we should at American Solutions/Tea Party funded by the RNC and chaired by Newt Gingrich himself! So THERE!
So if YOU don’t want to come and throw tea into the lake then DON’T. See if we care! (We don’t)
The original Boston Tea Party was a protest against a tax levied by a Parliament (British) in which the colonists had no representation.
Hence the phrase: “Taxation without representation.”
The Omnibus Budget bill, Stimulus bill, and bail out is going to cost our children, grandchildren, and maybe our great-grandchildren higher taxes. Where is their representation?
PP:
My bad. I just can’t read. They all seem to be there. Disaster averted, matey!
Drink some mint medley for me at the tea party!

Way to go, John. Trashing people’s right to assembly and free speech as “silly.” The tea-bag thing might be a gimmick, but it sure beats blowing up buildings to make a point. And he protests are voicing a legitimate concern among a lot of people.
2:36, I have no problem with the right to assembly and free speech. But it is my opinion that these tea party protests are silly.
Though I will agree with you that these protests are much better than violence.
It’s settled then. Throwing tea into Covell Lake is far better than blowing up women and children in random acts of anti-government violence. Phew. For a minute there I wasn’t sure which option would be agreed upon.
Well I for one will be there with my sign because nothing good can come from a spending plan like Obama is proposing. I mean, look at the last time we had a depression and the socialist FDR spent all that money – what did we get out of that, hunh?
Well… I guess the Hoover Dam, I guess THAT is still supplying electricity to three states and has paid for itself like, a hundred times now, but other’n that, what’d we get? Hunh?
Well, yeah, I guess we got the Agricultural Adjustment Act that, for the first time, paid farmers a subsidy… but other’n THAT what’d we get for that outrageous stimulus spending?
Well, sure, we got Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to insure our bank balances, and Federal Crop Insurance Program – who needs THAT nonsense, hunh? What a waste of money THAT was!
And the Tennessee Valley Authority! Put all those people to work to do what? Hunh? Bring electricity to Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and parts of Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia! Where’s the benefit in THAT? Hunh? Just because THAT stupid program paid for itself a hundred times over doesn’t mean it wasn’t a socialistical idea!
And all of that other stuff like Social Security! Why… I’d WAY rather be having my mom live with us and supporting her whether she likes it or not – rather than her living off on her own Social Security, free as a bird, runnin around with her friends and such, red-hat ladies, buncha nonsense if you ask me…
I don’t believe in giving poor people money – cause all they’ll do is SPEND it. I believe the system should benefit the rich people cause a rising tide raises all boats.
…course, that assumes everybody HAS a boat…
So if YOU don’t like the idea of us tea-bagging on tax day then don’t show up! We don’t NEED you! And for those of you that DO believe in what we’re doing – I’ll see ya there! Show me your tea-bag and I’ll show you mine!
Lookin forward to it!
Braden at 8:22, you are confusing Rick Santelli with Jim Cramer. Santelli doesn’t make stock recommendations, he just reports from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Cramer’s the one who makes stock recommendations.
It’s true: Rick Santelli’s “Tea Party Rant” in early 2009 really WAS spontaneous…
And the Tea Party effort that sprung up really WAS and IS a grassroots effort, spurred on by people just like YOU and ME.
…and Eric Odom, who was prescient enough to register ChicagoTeaParty.com in August of 2008 – a full six months before Santelli’s “spontaneous” tea party rant. You can find him over at the “grassroots” dontgomovement.com.
…and WOW! Cool beans! The logo over at dontgomovement.com is EXACTLY the same as the one at sdtaxdayteaparty.blogspot.com !!! What a coincidence!
…and Dick Armey over at freedomworks.org – that’s another good “grassroots” place to go get information about how to organize your “grassroots” tea party. As well as great “grassroots” articles like “Rush is Right, now Let’s Move on” and articles about how Keynesian economics don’t work.
…and the good folks over at americansforprosperity.org
another great place to get your marching orders for your “grassroots” teabag party. Folks like – hey! There’s Joel Arends name! Hi Joel! As well as James Miller – James worked for the Reagan administration – he was Executive Director of Vice President Bush’s Task Force on REGULATORY RELIEF! Hey! He’s one of the guys that helped get those pesky regulators off the backs of the bankers and the wall streeters so that they could create the economic crisis we’re in right now! HI JIM!
OH! And Americans for Prosperity is run by Tim Phillips, Ralph Reed’s former partner over at Century Strategies – they’re a firm that lobbies for Fortune 500 companies. And Americans for Prosperity is funded by the Koch Brothers! They are the richest family in America! They are big oil boys. They’re even richer than the Walton’s – you know – the people that own Wal-Mart? Yeah – these guys are even richer than them! WOW! Who better to finance a “grass-roots” protest, hunh?
And let’s not forget Fox News. I watch Fox News every day. They are the only TV channel that tells the truth. Just watch FNC for any length of time and THEY’LL tell you to get out there and support these anti-Obama teabag parties. And I listen to them! And you should too!
See you there! (I’ll be the one dressed like a tea-bag!)
The Custer County Republicans are encouraging any political parties of good will, and civil demeanor, to send as many people as possible to Rapid City, at noon, April 15th.
I wish I could be there to lend support. Unfortunately I can’t get off work. I wish luck to everyone going out today. Lets hope it makes a difference.

PP, tell me you’re not involved with these idiotic tea parties. You’re smarter than that.
