NRCC to Herseth Sandlin – Where’s the Stimulus BEEF?
Looks like the NRCC is asking Herseth Sandlin the eternal question – WHERE’S THE BEEF? Or at least, where’s a tangible end result from the plan dubbed “porkulous” which was supposed to create all those jobs:
Question to Stephanie Herseth Sandlin:
Where Are The Jobs?
As Obama Predicts 10% Unemployment, How Many Jobs Will Be Lost Before Herseth Sandlin Admits The Stimulus Has Failed?
Washington- President Obama said yesterday that contrary to his promise to “create or save” 150,000 American jobs, he believes the U.S. unemployment rate will reach double digits this year (Julianna Goldman and Rich Miller, “Obama Sees 10% Unemployment Rate, Chides Wall Street Critics,” Bloomberg, 6/16/09). In January, Obama’s economic advisors sounded cries that Congress had to pass the so-called “stimulus” bill if they wanted to contain unemployment rates to eight percent. So now that Obama is admitting that the stimulus doesn’t work, why is Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) still remaining silent on the harmful effects from the trillion dollar spending bill she supported?
“In January, the incoming administration predicted in a white paper study that without a huge stimulus package, unemployment would reach just over 8%, and would be contained at under 8% with a stimulus package.” (Jake Tapper, “President Obama Predicts Unemployment Will Hit 10% This Year,” ABC News‘ Political Punch Blog, 6/16/09)
“Since Stephanie Herseth Sandlin backed this massive trillion dollar so-called ‘stimulus’ bill, more than a million jobs have been lost and Americans will be stuck with the bill for years to come,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “It’s time for Stephanie Herseth Sandlin to finally admit that the stimulus has failed and explain to her constituents where the jobs she promised have gone.”
“Obama faces souring public opinion over his handling of the economy, which has shed 1.6 million jobs since the stimulus was signed in February. That total has far overshadowed White House announcements estimating the effort has saved 150,000 jobs, a figure that is so murky it can never be verified.” (Brett J. Blackledge & Matt Apuzzo, “Spin Meter: Obama’s New ‘Accelerated’ Recovery Plan Is Neither New Nor Accelerated,” The Associated Press, 6/9/09)
Americans realize the stimulus isn’t creating jobs. Even Obama is finally admitting what Americans already knew. If Obama and the American people are both able to see that the stimulus bill has not produced the results that Democrats promised it would, then why can’t Herseth Sandlin admit that she made a mistake in supporting this wasteful spending bill?
“[O]nly 31% of Americans believe the new government spending in the stimulus package creates new jobs. Forty-eight percent (48%) say the stimulus spending does not create jobs, and 21% are not sure.” (Rasmussen Reports, “45% Say Cancel Rest of Stimulus Spending,” 6/10/09)
“President Obama billed it as an adrenaline jolt — a $787-billion stimulus package that not only would put people back to work, but also underwrite construction and energy projects the country had long neglected. But with the economy still sputtering and some experts doubting the program was meeting its goals, Obama vowed Monday to accelerate stimulus spending with the goal of creating or saving 600,000 job s by summer’s end.” (Peter Nicholas, “Obama Confronts Doubts On Stimulus, Vows Faster Spending,” The Los Angeles Times, 6/9/09)

Braden: Three words for you: Kool-Aid cultist. Another liberal talking-point purveyor.
Much of this “stimulus” (not all, I will readily admit) is nothing more than the biggest political bribe in the history of the planet, because it is timed to start spending money in time for the 2010 elections. Obama has been setting the dates for the “effectiveness” of his massive spending (which he still, in a crybaby-like way, blames Bush for, even though Obama has outrageously amplified what Bush started) later and later from the very beginning.
Braden,
I would say that “delusional” would more accurately descibe a president that believes he can return nation to prosperity through massive deficit spending and dramatic government regulations.
“Much of this “stimulus” (not all, I will readily admit) is nothing more than the biggest political bribe in the history of the planet”
Well that’s your opinion, but it doesn’t change the fact you can’t judge the stimulus until the money is being spent.
“I would say that “delusional” would more accurately descibe a president that believes he can return nation to prosperity through massive deficit spending and dramatic government regulations.”
See the New Deal. And don’t come at me with revisionist history. By every economic indicator, the massive government spending in New Deal worked, followed by massive government spending in WWII. In fact, their budget deficits were higher as a percentage of GDP than this stimulus. Much higher.
O and his ilk said to sign the stimulus bill without reading it as it was oh so vital to be implemented immediately. What a joke. It is a conglomeration of all the pet projects of the Dems and many hidden items that are just now coming to light, and if it was so vital, why only the very miniscule amount already spent? O is planning to completely destroy this country, while still blaming it on Bush (O has never had to take responsibility for anything in his life, why start now!) and then rebuild it in his kumbaya, I am King, fashion. What other reason can there be for his reckless spending, actions, constantly downplaying America’s greatness, etc.
People are starting to wake up. Short of a recall election for him and most of Congress, espeically those already proven to be crooks, what are we supposed to do though?
Springer, call or write our reps and tell them you are not happy. Help recruit good, honest, people to run for office. Grassroots works! Watch the next election, the big spenders will be gone.
“O is planning to completely destroy this country”
It really is dangerous to be living in a delusional fantasy world. You’ve reached a whole new level of crazy when you’ve managed to convince yourself that the President of the United States is actually an enemy of the United States.
“People are starting to wake up. Short of a recall election for him”
Yeah you’d probably think that by watching Fox ‘News’ all day and listening to El Rushbo that people are starting to turn on him. In the real world, he’s got a 61% approval rating. Good luck.
Hey Braden…More people watch Fox than the milquetoasts at CNN or the shrill haters at MSNBC, yet you cite the 61 percent approval for Obama (not for long, though). Must mean that Fox isn’t as bad as you think, or that Fox viewers don’t have the tunnel vision you think they have.
And Obama may not be an enemy of America, but he is not a friend of America, with the way he keeps denigrating this country when speaking before adoring crowds overseas.
Remember when his chip-on-her-shoulder-the-size-of-Gibralter-wife made that famous remark, “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country?” Well, for the first time EVER in my life, I am AFRAID for our country.
Braden the new deal worked because, you saw it work? At a youthful 22 I don’t believe you have any idea of how well it worked other than from a mix of truth and fiction written. Apparently you run with a crowd that chants give it to me because I deserve it. Those of us who have worked long hours in our lives and not given up to failures don’t see things in the same light because we see you pulling dollars from our labors to make life somehow more adequate to the standards you desire. I appreciate all young people interested and involved in the politics of our nation and believe that your ideas and thoughts are just fine as long as they do not involve coming into my pocket book to further your agenda without the same contributions by you. By your standards I am probably more capable of paying more than a college age student of your genre so it appears to be a fair shake to you. Remember, when you age and the national debt still has you in chains, it will be your reward through sowing and reaping to be paying the price for the burden you helped cast on millions in the good ol USA.
“Braden the new deal worked because, you saw it work?”
You didn’t see the moon landings firsthand. Does that mean they didn’t happen?
The New Deal worked because every economic indicator we had back then got better. And if by ‘worked’ we mean that the economy got better, then I don’t see how you could argue it didn’t work. Or wait, are you telling me that the massive government spending of the New Deal didn’t help the economy, but that the massive government spending of WWII did? Ha. Open a history book.
“Remember, when you age and the national debt still has you in chains, it will be your reward through sowing and reaping to be paying the price for the burden you helped cast on millions”
Republican presidents have contributed to the national debt 15 times the amount that Democratic presidents have. So no, the national debt is not my fault.
Braden,
Compare the debt in dollars adjusted for inflation, you can’t compare historical debt in non-adjusted dollars.
William-
That figure is obtained by looking at spending as a percent of GDP. An adjustment for inflation would yield the same result, as it would adjust both the spending and the GDP. Sorry for the confusion.
Over the next decade, Obama’s plan will produce annual deficits averaging 5.3% of the economy — compared with a post-war average of 2%. Even Obama’s own budget director says that’s unsustainable. Meanwhile, the national debt will hit 82.4% of GDP in 2019 under Obama’s plan, according to the CBO, more than double the post-war average.

Braden, First of all you are arguing with yourself on Dem vs Rep, they have all driven us further into socialism. Your numbers don’t mean S**T. Take all the economist’s of the time and you will get roughly a 50/50 split on what the new deal accomplished. Tell the millions of hungry, broke, Americans throughout the 30’s and early 40’s how great the economy and GDP numbers were with the New Deal and I will stand back and watch them tear you to pieces not because of some interpreted statistic but because of the reality of hard times on hard working people who did nothing to create the problem in the first place. If I tell you that I throw money to the wind to change something and sooner or later a change comes, am I responsible for the change. Honest growth has always come off the back’s of an industrialized nation which earned it’s way into prosperity. Unfortunately WWII had more to do with the great depresion ending than the new deal. War has historically been used to stir the fire of industries. BTW go back 75 years and eat sweet horse feed for a few years if your lucky and then come tell me how the lunar landing went.
wow. the New Deal worked?? someone needs to look at the dow jones chart year by year from the start of the new deal and they may see how “things got better”. Find the chart and educate yourself on unemployment and the dow during the New Deal. When was unemployment at its highest? Also, a good predictor of our “New” New Deal’s future.

They also said that the state of the economy was worse than originally expected.
Keep in mind that 1% of the stimulus money has entered into the economy. One percent. The full effects weren’t supposed to be seen until 12-16 months after its passage. Last time I checked, June isn’t 12-16 months after February. Unemployment has been climbing, put the rate at which it has been climbing has slowed every month. Republicans look at all that, and conclude that the stimulus hasn’t worked.
One word: delusional.
