As for the main point of PP’s original post, is it at all surprising that he “is hopeful the ban goes into effect.” He voted for the ban. This really isn’t news. Moreover, I would again take issue with PP’s view that the ban is a form of nanny statism. I still believe there is a rational argument that the case for the smoking ban in enclosed spaces of public accommodation can be made through conservative principles. On this fourth of July, let us not forget the difference between simple license (ability to smoke wherever/whenever we want) and true liberty (the freedom from assault on our persons).

While questioning his Republican bona fides, let’s remember that Knudson was elected by his GOP colleagues in the Senate to be the leader of their caucus. It’s not as though he is a Lincoln Chaffee/Susan Collins/Olympia Snowe. He is the leader of the party in the state senate. He may differ from the orthodoxy on some views, but he has done the job of keeping the majority in the right hands and away from Heidepreim and Nesselhuf.

When the South Dakota Mainstream Coalition was initially formed in June 2005, many people, especially Republicans, had lots of questions. Since then, few of those questions have been answered.

The Coalition was founded by seven South Dakota Republican senators: Ed Olson of Mitchell, Tom Dempster of Sioux Falls, Dave Knudson of Sioux Falls, Stan Adelstein of Rapid City, Royal ?Mac? McCracken of Rapid City, J.P. Duniphan of Rapid City, and Duane Sutton of Aberdeen.

The group of so-called moderates formed the Coalition because they felt their disagreement with the Republican base on a number of issues was not welcome.

The voting records of the founding members of the coalition may also provide insight into what positions the coalition is likely to take:

* HB 1166 to provide information to women seeking abortions: all founding members voted against the bill
* HB 1233 to form a task force to study the impact of abortion: Knudson voted against
* HB 1249 to automatically ban abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned: only Duniphan voted for
* HJR 1001 to amend SD constitution to protect marriage: all voted against.
* SB 193 dealing with abortions on minors: Knudson voted against
* HB 1191 abortion restriction which almost passed in 2004: opposed by Duniphan, Dempster, Knudson, McCracken, Sutton, Ed Olson and Mel Olson
* HCR 1001 to abolish death tax: opposed by Ed and Mel Olson, and Dempster
* SB 180 to repeal video lottery: opposed by Duniphan, McCracken, Ed Olson
* SB 182 prohibiting capital punishment of juvenile murderers: Dempster, Knudson, Ed Olson, Duane Sutton supported the prohibition
* SCR 3 in support of gun shows: Knudson voted against
