Thune could be unopposed?
The Mitchell Daily Republic Blog is Speculating…..
…That means Thune has a $5.1-million-to-zero head start and nobody on the radar to challenge him. I feel a little silly about suggesting this, because it’s highly unlikely, but do we need to start thinking about the possibility that Thune will be unopposed in 2010?

Yahoo! I agree!
Sarah Palin/John Thune or John Thune/Sarah Palin in 2012! Either way works for me! You betcha!
I like the ad for JT on the right side of the page but stop the farm subsidies & disaster relief also.
Thune will not run unopposed. I would suggest Heideprim skip the governor’s race and consider running for US Senate where he can be of some real value. In any case, there will be some cannon fodder for Thune, just as there was fodder for Johnson and Herseth.
No Thune will not be unopposed. Us Dems will find someboody to run, and then Thune will crush them.
By the way I love the Thune advertisement here: John Thune, working to stop the bailouts….
….even though he voted for one.
I think somebody will run. Almost have to. You give him a walk, you are basically saying one of two things: 1) we don’t have anyone better, or 2) we’re happy with him too. I doubt the Dems want to send that message…
I don’t like unopposed elections, no matter if it’s a Democrat or Republican running unopposed. I’d rather see us voters get to have our say. And I want to register my vote against Senator Thune, even though he’s likely to win.
Why doesn’t Joel Dykstra challenge him in the primary? Joel did JT support you in anyway during the 2008 campaign? Did he endorse you or help you fundraise? Did he show up at any campaign stops to introduce you?
Chris Lien why don’t you run against him in 2010. After your family supported him financialy through the years and you served on Ellsworths Task force He didn’t lift a finger when you ran for congress did he?
Bruce Whalen weren’t you influential in helping him reach voters and gather support on the reservations and in indian country? Did he do anything to help you after you supported him with so much effort? I even read about your contributions in Daschle vs Thune.
What about the state party who poored recources into 2004. Has he held a fundraiser lately to support you? How many dinners has he been to this year in support of the SD GOP or party enthusiasm?
I can’t lay the sole blame at JT’s feet since Rounds is doing the same. I guess in my book I held John to a higher standard and expected more from him. I expected him to help build the party up rather than forget about them until 2010.
I thought John was a party builder.
Thankfully he votes right most of the time but John I’m discouraged while you sat in DC in 2006 and 2008 we were being slaughter in South Dakota. While you campaigned for Senators around the country you forgot that we had a competitive senate seat here. Why weren’t you here to make that a race the republicans of South Dakota love you and will do anything for you but you don’t seem willing to do anything for the ones who step forward like you once did.
I don’t think any of us who met you in the early 90’s knew you would go this far but we always expect the best from you and knew you had great potential.
You have my vote in 2010 but I hope we have your support after that for the 2012 and 2014 elections.
ouch! upset – I’ve also heard a lot of people talk like that around the state. It is very frustrating to believe in something and see the people you believe in sitting on their hands while we work hard for the causes we all supposedly share.
I look for a party builder in my next governor! That is the place to start. I believe Munsterman and Daugaard are the two people who will do that. I would like to hear them stress that point more.
So over the past two years when Daugaard was sucking up all the campaign cash that should have gone to Dykstra and Lien, he was actually party building?
Okay, starting to drop comments and still trying to steer it back on whether Thune will actually be opposed or not….
PP if you don’t mind I’d like to ad that Munsterman as a former County Chair understands the role of party building and will do a great job. Got to meet him at the state convention before he decided to run and he was great on the platform committee!
I hope JT runs unnopposed! I would like to see him get 100%.
Before the rescue bill I wouldn’t have cared for an opponent. What he did there was very stupid! He needs to show he’s not going to play RINO, and stick to at least constitutional principles and then he should get support. But right now, heck, I’d run against him if it wasn’t a waste of money!
Thank God we have loyal Republicans here in South Dakota! Senator Thune is going to be “the Man” until he decides he doesn’t want to be! But what the heck is wrong with our next door neighbors?
New survey in Minnesota shows that Gov. Tim Pawlenty is trailing Obama in his home state! The survey showed Obama 51%, Pawlenty 40%
And then that stupid survey says Pawlenty does better than Sarah Palin. Obama leads her in this state by 56%-35%. But that will all change after Sarah decides to spend some time in that State. Everyone in Minnesota always says “you betcha” so they understand and support Sarah Palin!
I know Pawlenty and Palin are our “great white hopes” for the Presidency in 2012, but by golly they need the support of Minnesotans!
First those Minnesotans elect Franken and now they won’t support Gov. Pawlenty or Sarah Palin over that guy obama! What the heck!
I tell you, I still think it is going to be Sarah Palin/John Thune 2012!
You betcha!
Well, I was for sure going to run against Thune that one day,
but then I had this really long talk with my cat, and then the hail came.
And right after that I saw this really huge picture of Mickey Mouse
in the clouds with a rainbow over it and so I…
Ok, never mind.
Get a clue. The senator votes the right way on 99 percent of the issues and you still have a h-on over one vote, a loan, that was being sold by Bush-Obama-McCain-Chamber of Commerce-Farmers Union-etc. as a dire-needs fix. Then the money wasn’t used as it was supposed to. So he didn’t support any more. Makes sense to me. I give the man credit for seeing that. He’s opposed every bailout and stimulus since. He’s fighting card check and cap n trade. All things I vehemently oppose as well. Kudos to him.
Also, who supported him when he ran as a nobody in his first House race? Janklow? Not. Sometimes you gotta earn some chits, not just show up and say: “Thune, gimme money.” He is the best thing this state party has going for it. Now that we’ll be rid of the person who is supposed to be leading the state party, Rounds, I’m guessing it’ll even be more Thune’s party – because he earned it and because it needs him.
Why would anyone want to run for higher office in SD when they know Rounds and Thune probably won’t even endorse them? Let alone want to be seen in public with them.
Thune gets 72%^ of the vote against an opponent.
Maybe rounds and thune saw the same thing the voters saw.
Ask D Johnson, J Johnson and many of the state legislators and they’ll tell you they were pleased to have the Thune machine behind them. They deserved it.
You have to earn support from the voters and from your party leaders. You can’t just show up because nobody else will run and expect everyone to go gaga over you.
I am glad that personality, leadership ability and knowledge on issues means something to some people. That they don’t just throw their support behind any old Joe or Joel that shows up.
I also don’t just throw anybody’s election sign in my lawn just because they are an R.
addict dude, you’re right except you’re wrong when it comes to statewide constitutional offices (those do-nothing see-nothing suck-up-taxpayer-money-career-polititician offices).
They get elected because they have an “R” or go unopposed. Then they bleed my money.
With the exception of Deitrich, Republicans have yet to find a viable candidate to challenge Representative Herseth-Sandlin. They don’t waste their time throwing good money at a race they know they’ll lose, and in the past two elections she’s won twice as many votes as her challengers.
I’m sure the Democrats will find SOMEONE, but don’t blame them when they use the same strategy against Senator Thune that the Republicans use against Representative Herseth-Sandlin.
to adict
I guess we just have a different mindset. I think Republicans especially those involved have a responsibility to the party and help get others elected. We should all do what we can.
The SDGOP really needs to get its act together in order to be effective as an organization. I hope it will and believe that it needs to NOW to make a difference in the 2010 elections.
While I’ve chosen to support candidates and local party efforts during elections, the past few election cycles most of my efforts have spent in behalf of specific candidates, not the SDGOP.

I have to admit it is looking good for John Thune! 2010 Senate, 2012 President!
