CONTACT: Lucas LentschThe Phoniest Man in South Dakota
to Run for GovernorPIERRE – Scott Heidepriem’s plan to run for Governor should not surprise anyone. He has been angling for statewide office for decades. Now, after switching to a new party to advance his long-running plan to seize higher office and after Stephanie Herseth Sandlin declined to run, Heidepriem’s plan is back on track.
Heidepriem, a millionaire trial lawyer in Sioux Falls best known for suing South Dakota taxpayers to force a tax increase, has been busy implementing his plan to look like a man-of-the-people:
. canceling his country club membership;
. selling his BMW;
. selling his mansion in Sioux Falls;
. hiring man-of-the-people image guru Steve Jarding.“Heidepriem’s phony image-building scheme should not fool anyone,” said South Dakota Republican Party Executive Director Lucas Lentsch. “After decades of being a Republican Party spokesman and running for Congress as a Republican, voters should ask if Heidepriem was being more phony then or more phony now. Voters should know that this fast-talking trial lawyer will do or say anything to get elected,” Lentsch added.

OUCH!
I think my jaw is still a little slack after reading this. The SDGOP didn’t pull any punches. At all.

I was a Republican from 1992 to 2004. I was much more phony back then. Fortunately, I discovered I could actually justify my policies when I became a Democrat.
People change parties. It’s not phoniness. Sometimes you think about your beliefs and realize they’ve changed. Or you realize the party you thought held certain beliefs doesn’t.
Keep the propaganda coming, Lucas. PP apparently is running out of original material.
So will Heidepriem and Knudson resign their Senate seats?
If so that will give the Senate two more..errr..one more Republican.
It’s not phoniness. It’s shedding your principles so often you don’t have anything left to cover you anymore.
I’ve never been able to understand it when the GOP goes after people for being successful – as if being a “millionaire” or having a “mansion” or a BMW, etc. etc. etc. is automatically a bad thing. In the long term, that just plays into the dems’ class-warfare game plan. Nail him for his stands on the issues, not for working hard and being successful.
Boy, you guys sound pretty scared. I haven’t heard this much chest thumping out of you since John McCain took on Obama.
This is the party of Steve Kirby? Slamming a guy for making money? What a bunch of hypocrites.
Speaking of Steve Kirby, I haven’t seen garbage like this in a campaign piece since Kirby-Barnett.
LOL. Because none of the GOP candidates have any money whatsoever, and none of them have ever set foot in a country club. Ever!!
I agree with 4:53. The SDGOP sounds like a bunch of liberals, chastizing people for being successful.
Hey Forehead better leave the manbag at home. What was it again Kristi Noem called out Heidepriem on?
I hope this isn’t the GOP angle on a Heidepriem candidacy. It will tire very quickly with voters. It’s red meat for the base but will do nothing to sway other voters. Might actually be a turn off.
I have to say I am schocked at the tone of the press release. If the tone of the press release is going to be the tone for election hang on people. I wonder if the reps are going to do Scott what the dems did to Kirby? I can’t say I like Scott as a person as I do find him very fakey but so are the reps. It is going to be interesting to see how this all plays out and am open to voting for him. I for one would like to see a dem in the Castle in Pierre. I have always belived our system works best when you truely have two parties in power state or federal.
An entertaining article, I’ll admit. Unfortunately, I find myself unsurprised to find an article with such ignorant hypocrisy and scathing misinformation(from an evidently uninformed republican). –Phony: false or deceiving; untruthful; concocted. Sounds like Lucas Lentsch and his specious claims.
So… Are there any republicans that frequent War College? It doesnt appear so. Its about time the GOP pulled their frilly panties out of their crack and quit sugar coating every statement for fear some leftist may take offense.
Kudos to Lucas… Maybe there is still one man in the party!
I can see all of Heidepriem’s whiny trial lawyer buddies are posting tonight. I guess they are taking a break from bilking taxpayers and suing companies into bankruptcy to line their pockets. If Heidepriem is all they have, i’m very unimpressed.
as a registered republican, i think the press release stinks. i agree with odenbach. forget about the guy’s house and his bmw.
I don’t think the SDGOP is attacking Heidepriem’s wealth- they are just pointing out his hypocrisy and phoniness. Heidepriem is trying to rebrand himself (again) as a common man. I can’t wait to see him dressed up as a hunter.
oooohhhh there are plenty of issues to come. For starters- how about pro-abortion, anti-gun, anti-business…. oh, and don’t forget about conflicts of interest and suing taxpayers to take even more of their money.
7:05, i agree with the ends — i.e., his phoniness. but that doesn’t justify the means. the commenters in 4:55 and 5:04 get it all wrong. the release isn’t attacking his success.
but in attacking his phoniness, the sdgop just sounds like it’s class-baiting. it’s in bad form.
this does raise a good question: was Heidepriem a bigger phony when he ran for Congress in 1986 as a conservative Republican or now that he’s running for governor as a liberal Democrat?
I think the press release was a little over the top.
Kristi Noem would make one teriffic Lt. Gov! For Daugaard!
I hear a lot of Dems and repubs in my area complimenting Daugaard and being unsure about Heidepriem.
Maybe I don’t know what press releases are suppose to look like but are they always this harsh? I can’t imagine anyone but hard core party liners taking the SD GOP seriously if they go off like this everytime they speak of a Dem.
I want to know what the GOP Gov candidates think.
Am I wrong?
Is Lucas Lentsch fresh out of middle school? Another outstanding “press release” from the SD Grand ol’ Phonies. I mean Party, sorry, Party.
The people who are suing over the Smoking Ban Repeal petitions are also “suing the taxpayers” and most of you anti-Heidepriemers are applauding them for it. So which is it? Ate you saying it’s ok to sue the State over smoking but not over education? You can’t have it both ways, boys.
The smoking ban people aren’t asking for more taxpayer money. Just their day in court to argue intent.
Oh really? The money that goes into video lottery and slot machines isn’t tax payer money? Interesting perspective, PP.
trial lawyer… a millionaire trial lawyer…best known for suing South Dakota taxpayers …country club membership…fast-talking trial lawyer ..suing companies into bankruptcy to line their pockets….none of the GOP candidates have any money whatsoever, and none of them have ever set foot in a country club…trial lawyer… a millionaire trial lawyer….suing companies into bankruptcy to line their pockets! We Republicans just have to keep on repeating this over and over again and make sure every South Dakota voter hears it.
I am so happy that we don’t have any of those “trial lawyers” in our Republican Party! That would be disgusting!
So, for the pro-Heidepriem people, can you tell me about this lawsuit against the state for more money for teachers? I have to admit, it sounds really bad, but I don’t know the full story. Please explain.
Odd. This press release looks as if it was written by Steve Jarding. I wonder if the GOP will next start stalking Heidepriem the way Jarding stalked Kirby and his family.
Releases like this are not helpful to the Republican cause. What ever happend to “my distinguished opponent….”? Republicans will gain nothing by pointing to a Democrat’s wealth and bellering “vote against him, he’s rich.”
Sheese!
Interesting emphasis for a release from the party that may witness a primary involving a candidate who is also a turncoat–the other direction. What will the press release look like when Knutson announces–equal treatment of similar situation or a little ignorance of irrelevant history? Or complete silence since he’s not the Governor’s man? Are they testing out a theme for Daugaurd’s campaign?
Yes, we beat those nasty democrats to the punch! We got the first shot in now let’s see if they can take it!
It’s on every news channel and newspapers: “mudslinging has already begun in the race for South Dakota Governor.” and all of the media is referring to “The Phoniest Man in South Dakota to Run for Governor”!
Good job there Lentsch. We Republicans are going to show those democrats just what mudslinging is all about! Those of you that thought the Kirby vs. Barnett campaign was so low-down and dirty haven’t seen anything yet! Stay tuned. The fun has just begun!
Lucas = Trailer trash. Is this the kind of legislator you thought you’d be if people were stupid enough to elect you?
You will preside over the worst disaster to hit the SDGOP because you are so low.
“Heidepriem’s phony image-building scheme should not fool anyone,” said South Dakota Republican Party Executive Director Lucas Lentsch. “After decades of being a Republican Party spokesman and running for Congress as a Republican, voters should ask if Heidepriem was being more phony then or more phony now. Voters should know that this fast-talking trial lawyer will do or say anything to get elected,” Lentsch added.
I don’t like this. Mostly because of the pickle it puts Knudson in. What if we replaced Scott’s name with Daves?
Aw, why bother!
…OK, You don’t sell stuff to be ‘one of the people’, because then you’ve got the money instead of the stuff. ‘the people’ get it.
This isn’t ‘bad form’ it’s good planning. The SDGOP knows that the gop primary could get bloody. They need to start carving up Heidepriem now cause he’s gonna have nothing but target practice for Rounds/Daugaard for months.
Otherwise, there’s no reason to blast a guy that hard (if he didn’t have a shot).
Just got real interesting.
The press release is certainly a far cry from the tone of the legislative campaign Lentsch ran last year up in Democratic District One–cherubic picture on expensive billboards and big signs, paid for by millionaire law–er, businesssmen, plastered all over, feel good messages about the wisdom of having both parties represented in Pierre and how issues shouldn’t be framed in terms of GOP vs Dem. Whatever it takes, I guess. I hope he likes what he’s doing.
The GOP drew blood from the liberal Sioux Falls lawsuit happy whiner. This was a bold stroke and very effective. Hedepriem is already on defense.
before all the crying from Democrats, what about Heideprem’s smear-meister campaign manager Steve Jarding. He evented the nasty attack. Shows you what kind of campaign Heideprem is planning.
“what about Heideprem’s smear-meister campaign manager Steve Jarding. He evented the nasty attack. Shows you what kind of campaign Heideprem is planning.”
Who do you think you’re kidding??
Scott Heidepriem announces he’s running for governor, and the SDGOP attacks him for selling his car & not playing golf anymore.
43 posts later I’m still waiting for SOMEONE to actually criticize his POSITION on some reasonably important issue.
“So, for the pro-Heidepriem people, can you tell me about this lawsuit against the state for more money for teachers? I have to admit, it sounds really bad, but I don’t know the full story. Please explain.”
South Dakota teachers rank 51st out of 50 states + DC in teachers pay.
Heidepriem & his law firm are fighting to do something to change that situation.
And to add to Tommy Paine’s comment, the law firm representing the school districts that Scott Heidepriem is a partner in is doing the legal work “pro bono publico”. Their firm isn’t going to make a dime on the work they are doing for the schools.
I am late to see this, but would like to echo Scott Odenbach’s comments and add a few. This attack si wrong on so many levels:
1- class warfare – I hope every South Dakotan encourages their kids to be succesful, like my “grease monkey” (his words) father of mine encouraged me and I encourage my kids.
2- party switching – that would be like the thousands of Catholics in South Dakota that left their family’s traditional home in the Democrat party to be Republcians, like most of my wife and my family have done (not all – but most).
3 – trial lawyer – that would be like GOP former Speaker of the House Rex Hagg, or myself, or the trial lawyers that put the Second Amendment case (Heller) together to establish a personal right under the Second Amendment, or the attorneys that wrote the Constitution like John Adams (a trial lawyer)
The problem with these types of attacks is that they LOWER the level of the debate, and they distract voters from talking about issues like controlling spending, increasing personal freedom, educating our kids, and reducing the level of government. Let’s get back on track here.
Wonderful. Keep pounding in the fact that he’s from Sioux Falls. Nothing gets the rest of the state riled up like a big city slicker.
Never mind that the leading republican candidate has essentially the same background.
For the first time I agree with Lee Shoenbeck….man its really cold here in hell today….j/k
Very well said Lee.
The state party is doing a great job! It sounds like some can’t handle the truth.
Scott is truly going to be a real threat. The state gop needs to keep his liberal record before the voters. He is going to run as a fiscal conservative, but he is a limosine liberal. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pointing out hypocracy, no matter if it is personal or on the issues. Remember Al Gore and his jet!
As a lawyer, I have no problem with the criticisms of his chocies to sue the state of south dakota for higher spending and taxes, at the same time he claims that the GOP is fiscally irresponsible and spending too much.
What! Lee Shoenbeck is a trial lawyer! What! Am I reading that right? I didn’t know that! I’m……I’m….I guess I am in shock! I, along with my fellow Republicans, have spent the last 10 years hating trial lawyers. I mean, that’s what I have been told over and over again by our National and State Republican Party Leadership. Trial Lawyers are bad….they are the cancer of our country….these terrible trial lawyers are all democrats and they hate America as we know it!
I…..I just don’t know what to say now. I really don’t. One day we Republicans are supposed to hate all trial lawyers and then the next day we are supposed to like them? It sort of makes me feel that I am a traitor to the Republican Party or something like that! I like Lee Shoenbeck! I wanted him to run for Governor. I would have supported him every step of the way. And now I find out, if it’s true, that he is really one of those terrible “TRIAL LAWYERS”!
My God! I am still having a difficult time believing that Lee Shoenbeck is one of those fast-talking trial lawyers! I guess it might be a good thing then that he didn’t run for Governor…..and that he is now completely out of South Dakota politics.
But you know, I still want to support Mr. Shoenbeck. In fact I honestly want him to be Lt. Governor under Munsterman. But I just don’t know anymore……I just don’t know!
I mean a “Trial Lawyer”, for God’s sakes Lee is a fast-talking Trial Lawyer! Why in the heck couldn’t Lee of been a banker or insurance company executive or something like that instead of being a darn Trial Lawyer?
Good job, Lee, lets get back on track. Do something good for South Dakota. No wonder good people shy away from running for office, who wants to take this abuse.
Well said Lee. This is just such bush-league tactics, I can’t believe it comes from the state party. Sad, sad, sad. Way to make us look small, mean and amateurish while legitimizing Scott’s campaign at the same time.
Tom Paine I will give you one. Forehead proposed legislation that would allow a casino near Sioux Falls, oh his firm’s client is the Tribe that wanted it.

(Bill, you’re post pimping again…. -PP)
If it had been on another blog would you say that, PP?
It’s right on topic. Isn’t that the point?
Do you have a problem with people reading
the Decorum Forum for some reason?
If so, what’s up with that?
You send people to other blogs all the time.
Bill, what’s with the chip on your shoulder?
Yes, I would say that if it was done by a different blog.
And yes, I direct people to other sites as part of the main post. It’s also appropriate here in the comment section when its being used as supportive material as part of a discussion.
But the way you’re doing it, it’s as if you were advertising Viagra or something.
My wife just told me that I need to go back and read “Comment by Lee Schoenbeck on July 28, 2009 @ 8:27 am”.
She said his post was the only one that made any sense on this blog topic!
Your topic is an attack on Heidepriem, my link is a direct rebuttal of the attack BY THE PERSON BEING ATTACKED. It couldn’t possibly be more relevant. Chip on my shoulder? Hardly. I’m just questioning your integrity, as in do you have any?
Bill,
(Aside from the part where I reference the article in another post..) Then post the part that you feel rebuts it, offer original commentary, and provide a link back to the main article for the rest.
If you do that, then it’s not just “Click here for viagra.”
What possible good would that do, PP? I’m not a mouthpiece for Scott, just a supporter. If he’s spoken on his own behalf, why not link to it?
Not all here read every thread, or haven’t you noticed? It’s in your stat counter. You do look at more than just the # of page views, right?
Bill, again, I linked to it in a different post. And it’s in the feeds on the right. I’m not sure how much more attention to your post I can provide.
I’ve stated the rules – the same ones I place on everyone. If you don’t want to follow the rules, don’t be shocked if I exercise editorial control.
Feel free to use your post as the basis for an argument, but don’t just say “click here to read my post on my website,” because I consider it the same vein of spam as “click here to go to my website for cheap viagra.”
Shocked? Ok. I won’t be. What I think is interesting is your continuous mantra about “pimps” and “viagra.” I’m thinking about politics here PP. What the heck are you thinkin’ about, dood? Havin’ some “issues” down south? If so, sorry, really, but I’m just not in a position to help ya, pardner.

Kudos to the state GOP for standing up and being counted. I can’t believe Hediepriem is running. He should stick to suing the government
