Are we going to get fooled again?

One thought struck me this afternoon as I contemplated the flap over Herseth avoiding any open forums where *gasp* the unwashed masses public might be able to ask questions.

Tim Johnson failed to debate his opponent this past election. And we allowed it to happen. Now, Herseth Sandlin is fleeing events where she might be forced to dialogue with her constituents.

Is this the new democrat modus operandi? Are we going to allow it to happen in this upcoming election?  Fool us once, shame on you…. Fool us twice….

We need to decide if we’re going to allow it to continue to happen.

Ducking debates the last few elections was bad enough. Are we going to allow her to duck US?

How do we not allow them to duck us? Do we put folks up against them (as in running against them) this early in the game to force them (Sandlin and Johnson) to engage?

Although, Senator Johnson will probably continue to get a pass because of his physical disability.

What this says is they don’t want any ‘trouble’ from their constituents. The sale of HR3200 would be more effective if THEY knew what was in it. But, not even Obama, is going o say that.

So Pat, in answer to your important and timely question, let me ask your patriotic readers another series of questions, as motivational food for thought:

If we try to force her to stop ducking and run somebody “great” against her…ask yourselves, ye political analysts steeped in SD lore: Is this what the people of “KELOLAND” will want? Whoever he or she is, could any conservative running against Queen Stephanie be able to get any traction in the face of the fawning media profiles of this courageous, inspirational, “working mom from Brookings” – who votes 97% of the time with Nancy Pelosi and endorsed Obama early right after abandoning John Edwards – “moderate blue dog democrat”?

Will all those people who have in the past been chiefly concerned with “what’s in it for me from Washington, D.C.” ever support someone who even in the slightest way suggests that maybe, just maybe, the Washington D.C. gravy train paradigm is unsustainable if we as a Republic are to survive?

Will a majority ever wake up to the fact that while our Federal wish list certainly sounds like a great deal for us, no longer can we simply send up the KELOLAND candidate in order to get us a better spot at the trough – because the trough has now been mortgaged to the Chinese during the last treasury bond auction?

And will those glued to the couch shouting about the Twins and the Vikings ever care enough to put even a fraction of that same passion towards those who are incrementally destroying the future of their nation?

Oh I love to dream about a day when such a candidate could have a real shot; when enough folks would tire of being spoon-fed by the TV personalities and hacks to actually start reading and thinking for themselves. However, I hesitate to believe that even at this late hour we are there yet. No, instead I hear there’s going to be somebody new this year replacing Paula on American Idol, that “Cash for Clunkers” has really been a hot deal for folks, and that what people really want to know when they hear we borrow $75 billion a week to run the Federal Government is: So why haven’t I seen any of that money yet?

Will somebody prove me wrong? Will enough say “enough”? Let’s hope so, because I think we’re running out of time.

Scott, let me answer your questions:

1) I think the ground hasn’t been so ripe for a resurgence of Republican ideas and candidates since 1994.

2) See #1. People know that we can’t spend our way out of personal debt problems and we can’t do the same as a government.

3) See #1. When we have debt, the banker controls our destiny. When we have cash, we control our destiny. The people understand this.

4) People will defend the interests of their family and its future like a tigress defends her cubs.

5) We have plenty of time to find candidates, have a good primary, and win in the fall of 2010. In this world of the internet, 24 hours news cycles, and blogs, much can change in a week much less 15 months. Don’t despair.

Troy I hope you’re right. I’ve started to hope that this year will be like 1980 and 1994.
