NOOOOOOO!!!!! Disney taking over Marvel Comics.

Sorry to depart from politics for a moment, but this seems like too much of a travesty to ignore:

The Walt Disney Co. said Monday it is buying Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing such characters as Iron Man and Spider-Man into the family of Mickey Mouse and WALL-E.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters. Many of them, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, were co-created by the comic book legend Stan Lee.

Read it here. Oh my god. They’re going to “Disney-fy” Spider-man. And give “The Punisher” a talking animal sidekick.

Nooooo!

It really was a good buy considering Spiderman’s Franchis alone will probably pay for 1/4th of the cost and Iron Man will certainly help!

As a DC Comics fan, I don’t have a dog in the fight, but this is not a positive development. Goofy vs. the Hulk. Nope, can’t see a happy ending here.

This has got to be the only time I have seen such agreement on one issue in the political blogs – both SDWC and South DaCola are upset on this – wow. I guess we all know how politicians can reach across to each other!

Disney has gone from a mark of quality to a candy coating on a dog biscuit.
I think ‘Milk Money’ explains it all.

From the Book of Revelations, in the King Jim version of the bible (NOT to be confused with the King James version):

And when he opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say “Come and See.” And there went out a Mouse that was squeeky voiced: And power was given those that sat on the Mouses’ board of directors to stinkith up the joint. And they were given totally awsome superheros to mess with, and yeah Wolverene went into anger managment classes and the Care Bears fought Dr. Doom to a standstill.

For you DC comics fans – this is what would happen if DC was taken over by Disney:

How will this change what Marvel does? I guess we will see.

If Disney can stay as hands-off as they are with Pixar, then this might not be a bad thing. The biggest potential impact could be on Marvel movies. For example, DC Comics is owned by Time Warner and they are constantly screwing up DC’s efforts to put out quality non-Batman movies. Luckily, Marvel has farmed out most of their popular characters to other movie studios, so hopefully Disney won’t get their mouse paws on them for awhile.

John,

We agree. I think this will be good for Marvel fans. Disney has, in addition to traditional vehicles, Pixar and Dreamworks vehicles for delivering innovative and creative the Marvel characters.
