Democrat proposes solving health insurance issue by penalizing free will
“Change” we can believe in? If a person chooses not to buy a product, then the government wants to fine them. Amazing.
A top senator is calling for fines of up to $3,800 on families who fail to get medical insurance after a health care overhaul goes into effect.
and…
But those who still don’t sign up would face hefty fines, starting at $750 a year for individuals and $1,500 for families. The maximum penalty on individuals would be $950.
Wow! Did the color of the sky change all of a sudden and now government can magically make people responsible through legislation?
Look. You can’t mandate responsibility. If we could mandate responsibility, most of the world’s problems would go away. This is just another bad proposal in a long string of them on solving the health care issues that this country has.

Tax the peasants into submission! Where are these morons from? I think they came from Nazi Germany and have resurfaced here.
My question is how can you get “blood from a turnip” as the old saying goes? If people can’t afford insurance and can’t afford the fine, then what? Throw them in a debtor’s prison?
CA, If you can’t afford a car you take the bus!
If you can drag someone to the hospital, force them to recieve the care; are you a good person for doing so?
Who’s life are you saving?
Some people want to live, some people want to die, some people want to enjoy eating a funnel cake…when is that a crime? When YOUR government makes it law!
first caheidelberger, those are state mandates on auto insurance, not federal.
second, even in those 40+ states that have mandates, there are still drivers who don’t have insurance.
third, uncompensated care is a small fraction of overall health spending. health insurance mandates would make only a small dent in health care costs.
fourth, these kind of mandates have already proven a failure in massachusetts, under romneycare. it just results in more cost-shifting, a shuffling of the deck chairs.
fifth, the plan proposes tax credits for those who can’t afford it. so, either way, the insured are paying for the uninsured, either through higher premiums or funding their tax credits.
sixth, the plan further politicizes health care. what health care coverage is going to be mandated? will erectile dysfunction treatment be covered? contraception? chiropractic? obesity?
we don’t need more insurance mandates, we need fewer.
Cory –
Yes, I do oppose mandatory car insurance. Why?
BECAUSE IT DOES NOT WORK. GOVERNMENT CANNOT MANDATE RESPONSIBILITY.
caheidelberger: Last I looked, 91 percent of South Dakotans have health insurance, which isn’t mandated, and 90 percent have car insurance, which is. Go figure.
The party of no does not believe in personal responsibility. They do not believe in mandating health coverage, are against mandatory vehicle insurance, are against seat belt laws, are against smoking restrictions – but they are all for socializing the costs when behaviors of following those socially deviant practices result in harm.
Jon, you need more sleep or a better breakfast. The Republicans DO believe in personal responsibility. It’s the libs who believe that the state can better take care of us than we ourselves.

I don’t know. Would abortion bans force people to be more responsible in their decision making? Some here certainly think so.

Godwinned. Thread over.

I assume you oppose the auto insurance mandate as well?
