Governor Rounds

Wait a minute. IM 10 doesn’t just affect my loved ones. It would directly affect *me*

I just had a realization.
In recent weeks, I’ve been talking about scenarios regarding “what if’s” when it comes to my relations and Initiated Measure 10.  I was thinking that I might be damned for my wife’s employment with a school district.
As I was getting in my vehicle this morning, I had a troubling epiphany. It’s [...]

What does one look for in Lt. Governor?

I’m currently attempting to type this with a bandaged hand, caused by misadventure in getting my auction ready on the 26th. I think I sprained a couple of fingers, or did something to mess up my hand enough where an ace bandage was called for.
Otherwise, the quick post below intrigued me enough to write on [...]

Gov’s Fiscal Chief to Legislators on Laptops: Snooze, and you lose.

According to today’s Argus Leader Governor Rounds fiscal chief Jason Dilges told the legislature’s Government Operations and Audit Committee that they should have spoken up earlier on laptops in schools. And because they didn’t… it makes everything alright?:
Legislators who question Gov. Mike Rounds’ school laptop initiative are two years late, the governor’s budget officer said [...]

Lyndell Peterson on quitting the SD Brand Board

Former State Senator Lyndell Petersen recently quit the South Dakota Brand Board. Coming on the hells of that “Ratlesnake Pete” as he was known by some of his colleagues has a letter to the editor that’s been sent out to some of the state’s newspaper which provides an explanation of sorts as to why he [...]

SDCAC/Open and Clean Government Shot down at the GOP Convention. And they’re not very happy about it.

From my e-mail box:

SOUTH DAKOTA REPUBLICAN PARTY SAYS THEY SUPPORTOPEN AND CLEAN GOVERNMENT BUT VOTE THE OPPOSITE
SD GOP WENT ON RECORD TODAY DEFENDING GOVERNMENT SECRECY, TAXPAYER FUNDS BEING USED IN POLITICAL PROCESS, AND WASTEFUL GOVERNMENT SPENDING BY OPPOSING INITIATIVE #10
Oacoma, SD - In a traditional establishment move the SD GOP opposed the common sense [...]

I resolve to form a platform.

The 2006 GOP Convention platform was more memorable for what delegates decided to point out their mission statement was, as opposed to any candidate that came out of the race. Jarrod Johnson went unchallenged for School and Lands. And by the time the dust had settled, John Koskan was the candidate for Public Utilities Commission.
However, [...]

New employee at the SDGOP

Since he’s down there now, I think we can go official with this…
Jason Glodt, an aide to Governor Rounds, is back with the SDGOP (at least for the election) as director of the 2008 GOP Victory Campaign effort.  Jason is the new “go to” person for candidates as they seek to put a structure in [...]

Report from my spies… Melmer to USD? Who missed the mark for Stanley County?

I just got a hot tip that Rick Melmer, Secretary of Education for Governor Rounds is one of the finalists for the position of Dean of the School of Education at U.S.D.
Aside from having to live in Vermillion, as opposed to a nice community like Brookings (Okay, I’m kidding…) this is a huge move for [...]

The Governor’s Gripe with 1233

In case you don’t get the Rapid City Journal, here’s a couple of exerpts why Governor Rounds had a problem with HB 1233:
It was written in a vacuum by people who don’t fully understand the structure and operation of the state of South Dakota’s finances. It conflicted with the state’s chart of accounts and classifications [...]

More on the Ethanol Blender Fuel Tax

This issue continues to burn up the blogosphere - here’s a copy of what the American Coalition of Ethanol sent out to their members on the topic of the recent memo:
Dear South Dakota ACE Members:
Last week, Governor Rounds instructed the SD Department of Revenue & Regulation to issue a memo to all SD fuel [...]

Press Conference on Ethanol Today?

One of my sources tell me that Senate Minority Leader Heidepriem will hold a news conference today to criticize Governor Rounds for how taxes are collected on gas and ethanol. Word is it’s on the blended pump issue, which he could have addressed during session.
So what is bringing it to the forefront for him now?
UPDATE [...]

Making a Difference One Person at a Time

Today was the annual “Good Shepherd Luncheon” which is the largest fundraiser for this ecumenical ministry serving the needs of the homeless, poor and needy in the Sioux Falls community and “created to encourage and empower people to live with dignity and achieve self-sufficiency.”
Attendees included Bishop Paul Swain, Governor Rounds, and Mayor Munson.  Paster Heidi Binstock of [...]

State Government versus the tribe. Just a little too reminiscent of bygone days.

From KELOland News tonight is a story about State Government versus the tribe. For those of you who have been kicking around a few years, to me, this seems just a little too reminiscent of the bygone and forgotten days of the AIM movement:
The Governor and the US Attorney are now getting involved in that [...]

KELO: Former Trooper reacts to Highway Patrol Cuts

KELOland news has an interesting story on a former Highway Patrol Trooper as he reacts to the $2 million in cuts to the Highway patrol that Governor Rounds made:
A former trooper says the cuts are affecting the patrol and the public.
and…
Although every job has its drawbacks, the $2 million cut is one he couldn’t [...]

HB 1233: When it came time for a final stand, someone rolled over and went “woof.”

When it came time for legislators to make a final stand in the Senate today on House Bill 1233, apparently there was some serious withering going on in the face of Governor Rounds appearing at the caucus. As noted in a release from the South Dakota Conservative Action Council:
The South Dakota House of Representatives, [...]

Thanks. I appreciate it.
What I learned at the Convention Slate Selection today in Pierre

YEAH!!!
After trying to solve the problems of the world until 3am last night, I attended the State GOP Presidential delegate selection which began this morning in Pierre. And, I managed to get through the regional and statewide delegate selection process.
As of tonight, I am part of the delegate slate for Senator John McCain. It was [...]

Governor approves new abortion regulations.

As reported tonight on KELOland news. Governor Rounds has signed a new measure on abortion that requires the doctors to ask the patients if they’d care to see a picture of their fetus before it is ripped from their womb:
The new law will require doctors to ask women seeking abortions if they want to see [...]

An example of openness?

Wondering what South Dakota’s website of spending could look like if the measure is not vetoed by Governor Rounds? Check out what Kansas has:

Rounds: I’m with Huckabee until the end.
Huckabee: The end.

Looks like this statement by Governor Rounds couldn’t have come at a worse time. From Tony Mangan at KCCR Radio:
Governor Mike Rounds says he will continue to support Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee as long as the former Arkansas Governor is in the race.
and…
Rounds was among Huckabee’s first supporters. He says Huckabee understands the situation [...]

Governor Judged by someone other than his maker.

Governor Rounds has been judged unworthy. At least, his commenting on the education lawsuit was deemed unnecessary according to Tony Mangan at KCCR News:
Judge Lori Wilbur , in her written ruling filed Friday in Hughes County Circuit Court, says the plaintiffs “did not demonstrate” that the Governor’s testimony was absolutely necessary. Wilbur says [...]
