Dem’s talking points on the Ethanol Blended pump issue

Just in case you were wondering, here’s the talking points the dems are shipping to their operatives and candidates around the state on the Ethanol Blended Pump Issue:
CAMPAIGN 2008 UPDATE - From South Dakota Democratic Party
Rounds violates separation of power with double tax
At the bottom of this email is the press release issued Monday by [...]

Press Conference on Ethanol Today?

One of my sources tell me that Senate Minority Leader Heidepriem will hold a news conference today to criticize Governor Rounds for how taxes are collected on gas and ethanol. Word is it’s on the blended pump issue, which he could have addressed during session.
So what is bringing it to the forefront for him now?
UPDATE [...]

Political will and will not?

The Argus has an article this morning where State Senator Scott Heidepriem discusses how the state could be doing much better for education if we had the political will:
“It clearly shows that the local folks are shouldering their fair share,” state Sen. Scott Heidepriem, D-Sioux Falls, said. “Where we are falling behind is in the [...]

Who’s in the hunt as we run up to the finish line?

I’ll clean this up a bit, and do some armchair quarterbacking & analysis after about Thursday, when most of the mailed petitions will have been received.  But until that time, here’s who is filling up the political parties’ respective dance cards.  Primaries in bold.
State Senate:
District 01 Democratic Gary D. Hanson
District 02 Democratic Jim Hundstad
District 03 Democratic Alan C. Hoerth
District [...]

Not quite “Kumbaya” on the day before session, is it?

This isn’t exactly a warm fuzzy between legislators and the Governor on the day before the final day of session. As reported in the Rapid City Journal, State Senator Gene Abdallah didn’t have much love for the Governor over the Gov’s 2 million dollar cut of law enforcement in South Dakota.
And Scott Heidepriem was all [...]

HB 1233: When it was time to stand and be counted on the topic of government openness…..

The Associated Press is writing tonight on the passage of HB 1233, the little government openness measure that could. It passed out of the house 47-22. It got killed in Senate State affairs.
Like a revenant rising from the grave to avenge itself on those who don’t like the light of day shining on government, it [...]

A rough scorecard off of the top of my head at midnight before my head hits the pillow.

It’s far from complete, and I know there’s a ton that I’ve written about. And I know I’m missing most all of of the incumbents from this tally.
Here’s your chance to help fill in the gaps. I’ll keep tabs on, and update the list here. So, let me know - who’s in, who’s out, and [...]

Why was this bad 4 years ago for state government, but good for everyone now?

2004 - SB146:
Sponsored by Senators Kloucek, Koetzle, Nachtigal, and Sutton (Dan) and Representatives Valandra, Engels, Gillespie, Miles, and Nesselhuf :
FOR AN ACT ENTITLED, An Act to require state agencies to adopt certain energy-saving measures. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA:
Section 1. Each agency and department [...]

Code of Conduct voted on in the legislature. Why?? Because they wouldn’t know how to behave otherwise.

The code of conduct has officially been adopted by the legislature. Because apparently some legislators don’t know they shouldn’t share a bed with legislative employees, nor not to sexually molest their foster kids. So, we needed a rule for it. According to KELOland news, here’s the story:
South Dakota lawmakers have passed a code of conduct [...]

It’s not a Republican versus Democrat issue. It’s Chamber versus Chamber.

Leading up to the legislative session being held this next month, the Argus Leader Editorial board spoke with Dave Knudson and Scott Heidepreim regarding their similarities, and how the parties differed. Quizzically, I’m getting the distinct impression that they’re inferring that there is less difference between the Senate caucuses, than there is between the two [...]

So, does this mean he’d fight pipelines and other forms of energy development as Governor?

The Coming Storm in the South Dakota Republican Party: I’d like another helping of the abortion issue. Please?

When I started writing this series, I figured one of the issues I’d focus on was one of the most divisive issues that Republicans have faced over the years - the legality of abortion.
There’s been much written about the issue dividing the party, and how it’s caused much of our electoral troubles. Or has [...]

Glory Days

Brown County’s presence in the Legislature might get stronger in the years ahead. Julie Johnson’s move back to the Hub City is the reason. She knows the ways of the Legislature and lobbied when she was a cabinet member.
Twenty years ago Brown County had one of the most powerful legislative delegations ever. Joe Barnett, Bud [...]

Roll Call on the Democratic and GOP Bench

I wish I could just reprint the whole darned thing, as Roll Call has a huge article on the potentials in South Dakota’s federal campaigns. But that’s bad form, so here’s just a snippet from the democratic side of things:
If and when Herseth Sandlin ever vacates her House seat, look for Brendan Johnson (D), a [...]

Stealth Choice(s) for Chief of Staff?

Why not Jim Soyer? He was c-o-s during Janklow’s last term as governor after Jim Hagen’s resignation. Jim Soyer has been around so long and keeps such a low profile that he gets overlooked by the rumor mills.
Rob Skjonsberg told Cabinet members about his resignation plans before the announcement went out. According to some of those in the [...]

Kranz on the Herseth Factor

This morning at the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Dave Kranz relates the point of view by the current 2010 hopefuls on the possibility that Herseth might get into the 2010 gubernatorial race. Neverminding she has to get past 2008 first:
Knudson: “My attitude would be simply be to welcome her to the 2010 race. The fact [...]

South Dakota GOP goes after Heidepreim for his comments as well

From the South Dakota Republican Party:
Heidepriem needs to apologize for ‘hate’ comment
PIERRE – Democratic leader Scott Heidepriem owes an apology to a large majority of South Dakotans for calling the Republican Party the party of “hate.”
“It is comments like that that show how out of touch with reality that Scott Heidepriem and the Democratic Party [...]

Minnehaha County GOP Chair Blasts Scott Heidepriem

From a release issued today:

Republican Chair Blasts Democrat Leader
(Sioux Falls) Dick Kelly, Minnehaha County Republican Chair and former State Senator, blasted comments Democratic Senator Scott Heidepriem made last weekend at a Mc Govern Day rally in Mitchell, as reported by The [...]

Heidepreim: Republicans are the party of hate

In a comment reminiscent of Tim Johnson’s taliban comment that got him into trouble a while back, Scott Heidepreim does him one better, and at the McGovern Day library event this past weekend flat out calls Republicans the party of hate as related by new website Badlands Blue:
Heidepriem said it was a thrill to serve [...]

A brief synopsis of what’s going on out in South Dakota

It’s 6AM, and I couldn’t sleep.
Why? None of my kids had to be hauled anywhere last night, so I treated myself to an icy cold beverage in a frosty mug. The downside of that, is any intake of alcohol causes me to wake up ridiculously early. So, at about 5am this fine Saturday morning, my [...]
