State Government

Knudson cites “Rounds/Daugaard administration”

I was browsing each respective candidates campaign Facebook pages this morning and came across an article that Dave Knudson had to linked to from the Mitchell Daily Republic. In the article, Knudson joined the fray in criticizing the Governor’s plan to close 17 drivers license exam stations throughout the state, and essentially transfer those duties from [...]

Where does the responsibility for the unemployment fund shortfall rest? One former legislator weighs in.

The Unemployment fund crisis in South Dakota is leaving only a few options. Double the surcharge, borrow from the federal government, expand benefits to get one-time Obama money, or a combination of all three:
What Labor’s forecast shows is the UI system will go broke this winter and need at least $6.6 million to get through [...]

A show of hands as to anyone who thinks State Government can do it better, with less expense for taxpayers?

Anyone? We’re still waiting….
That’s because there’s no reason under the sun to pass off the administration of South Dakota’s Technical institutes to the State Board of Education. Unless taxpayers WANT to have our tech schools become top heavy with highly paid administrators, as well as ever increasing student fees:
A special subcommittee was appointed [...]

In case you’re looking for a place to shave a few shekels off the budget…

In case you’re looking for a place to shave a few shekels off the budget, the Department of Health might be one place that legislators could peel some bucks off from, since they clearly have money to burn.
From the Pierre Capitol Journal:
Sign up is underway now at www.HealthySD.gov and from March 1-31, participants can long [...]

Argus Story hits on Exec Branch/Legislator information

Remember the story I had mentioned a week or so ago about how the executive branch was digging in a bit is response to a legislative request for information?:
The LRC had a list of aircraft, but to get details about those planes – their conditions and estimated values – a researcher had to ask officials [...]

Oops. Spoke too soon. Rounds refuses to rule out new taxes, citing that legislature must live “within their means.”

At the same press conference that KELO (among others) quoted the Governor as saying that “we’re not going to be asking for any new funds,” another media souce has the Governor also refusing to say “no new taxes.”
Among the factors Rounds refused to rule out were lowering or eliminating the proposed 1.5 percent across-the-board raises [...]

Are they paying for playing? Rapid City Journal doing series on it, but does that make it so?

So, are they paying for playing?
Are donors getting special favors from state government because of what they gave to whom?
Lee Breard seems to think so, as he’s continued his vendetta against state government after an election which found his ridiculous initiated measure 10 discarded at the ballot box. The Rapid City Journal seems to infer [...]

Maybe not a job freeze, but we’ll consider that jobs be lightly chilled

From today’s Brookings Register (Dead Tree Edition):
University takes hard look at hiring – No Job freeze, but SDSU officials will take a second look at open positions in light of job restrictions.
South Dakota State University Administrators will further scrutinize upcoming budget decisions – including hiring and travel requests – in reaction to the recent restrictions [...]

Come back to the Brand Board, Lyndell Petersen, Lyndell Petersen

Governor Mike Rounds was in a summit meeting with the Stockgrowers on Saturday. Mainly because they’re all mad at him over the Brand Board. Before, it was over replacing several members of the brand board. (I was around then, and trust me, there were problems) But lately, they’ve got a new reason to be mad [...]

Is that just a little too much power in the hands of an agency?

From KELOland:
The Game, Fish and Parks Department has a building project in the works at Rapid City.
and..
The $12 million it will cost comes from money saved up the past several years from license sales and taxes on sporting goods.
Read it all here. And there’s more on it at the Rapid City Journal:
GF&P has changed directions [...]
