Drinkin’ on the rez’ with the Frugal Traveler?

The New York Times has a bizarre article from their contributor “the Frugal Traveler” where he tries to romanticize his sneaking liquor on to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
But stop I did, for there was one place I had to see: the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This is the home of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, [...]

Was that the only comment made that day?

The Argus Leader is noting on-line tonight that Dan Scott might be preparing to make some mea culpas on the comments he made about the need for lawmakers to get out of Sioux Falls’ way:
The comments made by Dan Scott at an event hosted by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce on June 15 [...]

Save the date 9/14/07 – Is this the first big go around for the 2008 candidates?

I was in a Brookings Republican meeting this morning as we were planning our Lincoln Day Dinner (which we anticipate doing with Grant, Moody and Deuel Counties), and it looks like it could shape up to be one of the major political events of the fall.
The plan is to base the event around the people [...]

Just like other Democrats, Cathy Piersol shows her disdain for the first amendment.

I mentioned in a prior post that I couldn’t find this article, which one observant reader pointed out to me.
Apparently it wasn’t in the letters to the editor. It was in the Argus’s Rants and Raves column where Judge Larry Piersol’s wife and fellow Democratic attorney complained that *gasp* bloggers were exercising free speech and [...]

Regents have agreed to be on the Hunt. Did they choose the right field, or should they have stayed in the camper on this one?

The Board of Regents has given the Government Research Bureau at USD the go ahead to participate in the effort against Roger Hunt as part of the dispute over whether or not he has to reveal the donor of $750,000 to the Yes on 6 campaign. According to KELO-land news:
The state Board of Regents will [...]

Missed that one…. Anyone catch the Piersol letter?

“When do you plan on getting that junk out of my basement…?”  Now, that’s a phrase I’ve heard a few time over the last three or four weeks since I got back to Brookings and ended the commute.
I finally got back to Pierre today, cleaning out the remainder of the Pierre campus of the SDWC [...]

You can shoot horses, but you can’t eat them. Or can you? Congresswoman Herseth Sandlin can’t make up her mind.

I keep hearing in my e-mail box that there is some growing flak out west river against our Congresswoman for the position she’s taken on the slaughter of Horses. Or should I say, her position(s).
Apparently she’s been wavering in the saddle a bit:
Herseth Horse Slaughter History -2005-2007
2005 (109th Congress)
H. Amdt 184 to H.R. 2361 (Interior [...]

Sins of omission….

Oops.
When I mentioned that Shantel Krebs and Pat Costello were attending the upcoming National Republican Congressional Committee Campaign School, I omitted the fact that Larry Russell was registered to attend as well.

Your opinion on the happenings in Rapid City

Since the whole flap over the Hanks/Adelstein negative flyer in the Rapid City Mayoral Race continues to grow in the Rapid City Journal and other media, here’s a poll to take the pulse of your opinion in the matter:

What was your opinion of the Hanks’ Wing-nut mailer?

Alan had to do it to defend himself from [...]

Napoli to Adelstein: Get some counseling.

The war of words between Bill Napoli and Stan Adelstein heated up in the Rapid City Journal this morning when Adelstein once again confirmed that he’s going to get Napoli. And his little dog too.
It detailed how Adelstein supported Democrat Theresa Spry, and would likely be involved in recruiting a Republican  opponent for Napoli. Which [...]

Badland Blue: Congratulations Senator Johnson for trailers for the reservations.
Native American Times: Why are you sending us those poison trailers?

I recalled tonight that last Saturday, the Democratic website Badlands Blue was congratulating Senator Johnson over the legislation which was passed providing that the unused FEMA trailers from the Katrina disaster could be sent to Indian reservations for housing.
Why did I recall that? Because there’s an article on-line today at the Native American Times raising [...]

From the Desk of Tom Daschle….

Just in case you needed to spend some money on a Democrat today, because Tom Daschle told you to do so…

Dear XXXX,

Senator Tim Johnson needs our help today. Karl Rove is looking for weakness, and it’s up to us to show Tim’s support is strong and deep. Can you make a contribution today?

I am writing [...]

Check out Powerline – Thune noted as champion of blocking the immigration measure

Go check out the powerline blog, and their comment on  how US Senator John Thune helped to derail the immigration measure this morning:
 Bridge on the River Why
Thanks to a new generation of Republican heroes arriving on the scene to fill the shoes of Colonel Warden and Commander Shears and blow up that damn bridge, the [...]

Time for School
Krebs and Costello going to Washington

I heard today that Representative Shantel Krebs and Sioux Falls City Councilman Pat Costello are signed up for the NRCC Congressional Candidate School on July 23rd, 24th and 25th in Washington DC.
This probably is a good indicator that they’re exploring possibilities to make a grab for the congressional seat.
On the other side of things, I’m [...]

Herseth’s Blue Dogs want to have their cake and eat it too on energy policy

From Congress Daily:
The Blue Dog Coalition of moderate-to-conservative Democrats outlined its own package of energy measures Wednesday, including a call for the United States to address climate change with a bottom line that any policy should not result in a net loss of domestic energy.
The coalition, hoping to influence the upcoming House debate [...]

Miscellaneous of the day.

I got a phone call from Mrs. PP.
“I can’t even go to a Board of Regents meeting without people talking about your stupid website.”  My wife was at the Board of Regents meeting held in Brookings today with regard to some discussion on certifications in her area of education. Apparently a few well wishers were noting [...]

Oh where, oh where have my PAC Statements of Organization gone…

I think we’re about 3 days out from the time the new laws take effect, and there seems to have been an incredible lack of forms being filed with the Secretary of State’s office to bring groups’ filings up to date.
Looking on-line this morning, I counted exactly TEN statements of organization from political committees which [...]

Tim Johnson supports the president on Immigration. Too bad South Dakotans don’t

According to Badlands Blue, Senator Tim Johnson supports the president’s bill of allowing illegal aliens a track for citizenship. Showing that America is the land of opportunity for people who break the rules that the rest of us are supposed to follow. Darn my immigrant ancestors for entering the country according to the rules.
Washington, [...]

I think I mentioned that this was going to happen. Alan Hanks tries to explain. The operative word being “tries.”

I think I mentioned earlier that after the Rapid City election, Alan Hanks was going to have a lot of explaining to do about his negative campaign tactics. And it shouldn’t come as a shock that we’re hearing a lot of “well they did this……” as a justification. But there’s problems with that.
To start with, [...]

Dakota Voice: GBLT Community Elected Hanks? (Updated – Message Fake?!?)

Bob Ellis has an interesting post over at Dakota Voice where Rapid City’s GBLT community is apparently sending out press releases and taking credit for the Hanks win:
I just received an interesting email through the Dakota Voice press release email account. It was from timdrew@veryspeedy.net (is this the same Tim Drew that took issue with [...]
