Congrats to candidate Daugaard in his election. No, not that one.

No, it’s not 2010 yet. There was a Daugaard just elected to office, but not the one you think. The winner in the SDSU Student Body presidential contest was just announced, and it just happened to be the Lt Governor’s son, Chris:
Chris Daugaard, son of Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and Eric Hanson of Sioux Falls [...]

Highway Patrol Funding fight causing a rift in the GOP?

The Mitchell Daily Republic Blog is intimating that the pointed comments during conference committee negotiations between Senator Gene Abdallah and Representative Shantel Krebs might be indicative of a rift in the GOP between the Governor and the Legislature.
What did they have to say about it?:
Ever since Gov. Rounds announced his plan to slash the Highway [...]

Tough Crowd at the Lobbyist party

Answer: Performance Enhancing Drugs
Question: (No sign of these in the Governor’s Office)
Ouch.
Nobody was spared at the lobbyist party last night during their “karnak” bit as liberally lifted from Johnny Carson:

Click on the image to enlarge and read the jokes which mercilessly roasted members of the legislature the administration, and political figures in general.

Johnson campaign endorses hatchet job against Steve Kirby? No, Now they’re doing it themselves.

What, did that even take 24 hours before the campaign said screw it, and decided to start slogging in the mud themselves?:
Johnson campaign attacks Steve Kirby
Email comes one day after Web site launched
One day after national Democrats attacked Steve Kirby, Johnson’s own campaign attacked the Sioux Falls businessman, saying in an email this afternoon [...]

Breaking news as SD123: Curt Bernard running for Yankton City Council after being thrown out of office

From South Dakota 123:
Just months after a resounding defeat in the recall election, former mayor Curt Bernard is circulating petitions to run for city commission again
Read it all here.

Dems release poll on Johnson V. Kirby. But take a look at those Johnson job approval numbers.

The DSCC (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee) continues it’s obsession with Steve Kirby and has issued a press release with poll numbers on a potential Johnson v. Kirby race. And that’s nice, except for the fact he hasn’t entered the race.
But what I think it might unintentionally show is a crack in the wall that [...]

First it was Rounds v Jerstad. Now, it’s Rounds v. Apa.
Boxers, Shake hands. Now let’s get it ON!

After a bruising war of words between Senator Sandy Jerstad and Governor Mike Rounds, a battle has begun on another front. The Governor and the Chair of Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Jerry Apa have a new war of words being played out in the press.
As Bill Harlan relates in the Rapid City Journal, after the [...]

You’d better watch out for far-left, ultra liberal me?

Sibby must be off his meds again, as he decides to take a poke at me:
Typical of the Judas of the South Dakota conservative movement to push the far-left talking points after gaining information at a conservative gathering.
I’m not sure if he’s taking a shot because he doesn’t like my site redesign, because I actually [...]

Johnson campaign endorses hatchet job against Steve Kirby?

The Argus Leader has an article today on the campaign website going after non-candidate Steve Kirby.
And curiously, the Johnson campaign certainly doesn’t disavow it at a time that Republicans have actually backed off concerns about Tim Johnson’s ability to do his job because of his medical condition:
State GOP Chairman Karl Adam called it “a new [...]

National Democratic Party targeting South Dakota to try to save Johnson’s Seat

About the same time the Dems launch an all out assault on a person who hasn’t entered a campaign yet, The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee kicked this press release out today to put the world on notice that it’s dumping money into South Dakota in an attempt to try to retain a US Senate seat [...]

I think the dems aren’t so sure how safe that seat is.

Good gosh. Just a little overreaction to Kirby contemplating a run at Johnson’s seat. Check out what Seth Tupper at the Mitchell Daily Republic Blog has to write on it.

SDCAC versus Napoli on term limits

After the recent press release by the SDCAC, one of the legislators sponsoring the measure isn’t taking it laying down. In fact, I’d say instead of laying down, he’s throwing down.
From Bill Napoli to the other legislators who got the SDCAC’s press release:
From: sen.napoli@state.sd.us
Sent: Wed 2/27/2008
To: (redacted)
Subject: Breard’s Term Limits Letter
This [...]

Governor reacts to Legislature’s spending 11M more than he asked for

KCCR News has an interview with the Governor on their website where the Governor comments on the spending bill that came out of appropriations:
Governor Mike Rounds says he is surprised that legislative appropriation committee members think there will be $11 million more in state revenues during the next fiscal year.
The committee decided Monday that there [...]

State Forecast: The construction drought is going to continue.

The Pierre Capitol Journal has a story in the paper today about the number of local bridges rated the same as the one in Minneapolis that fell down. Including the one that runs between Pierre/Ft. Pierre.
And that’s just the frosting on an article discussing the dire state of highway funding in South Dakota:
The Missouri River [...]

A video statement from the voteyesforlife campaign on the reason the Abortion ban is returning to South Dakota in 2008.

The Vote Yes for Life campaign has posted this video on-line noting why the issue has been brought back to South Dakota for the 2008 election season. What do you think?

Not your Daddy’s Catholic Church. But it just might be your granddaddy’s.

Kevin Woster has a story at rapidcityjournal.com on the Catholic diocese in Rapid City allowing petitions for the new abortion issue in west river Catholic Churches, and possible tax implications of pressing the matter.
Don’t worry. The Catholic Church knows exactly how far it can push it.
The Catholic Church has been a prominent leader in the [...]

The die is cast for District 13: Heidepreim versus Heineman is ON.

Just got the word from one of my spies tonight that Phyllis Heineman has petitions out for the District 13 State Senate Race against Senate Minority Leader Scott Heidepreim. She was circulating them last weekend, and as I’m told, got many words of encouragement.
Let me be the first on-line to add to them. You [...]

Vote Yes on 6 is back with a new campaign, and a new name.

Planned Parenthood is moaning in anguish, because the Yote Yes campaign from 2006 is back with a new name, and a new attitude - From today’s Argus Leader:
The Vote Yes campaign is continuing efforts made in 2006 to ban abortion. The 2006 measure that passed the South Dakota Legislature, but was rejected by voters, would [...]

Stephanie hearts Obama bestest.

In various reports around South Dakota, Congresswoman Herseth Sandlin has apparently endorsed Barack Obama for president, following her original guy, John Edwards in forsaking Hillary Clinton:
Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin has decided to endorse Barack Obama for president.
and…Herseth Sandlin says her decision was based primarily on Obama’s interest in promoting renewable energies and his interest in [...]

Welcome to the Fray, School of Thought

School-of-Thought is a new blog on the South Dakota scene that should be worth your time checking out.
Written by Fred Deutsch, a Watertown School Board member, he’s delving into issues from a side of things that many of us don’t see (yes, even myself who might grumble about school boards on occasion). For instance, [...]
