Should congress be looking in the mirror when they point fingers

Nationally syndicated columnist Cal Thomas points out a few things that people keep forgetting when people such as Nancy Pelosi try to lay the blame for the nation’s fiscal crisis at president Bush’s feet:
Democrats would love to blame the Bush administration for a disaster they mostly helped to create. But, according to the White House, [...]

A connection between 2006’s Jail-4-Judges and Yes on 10?

Remember last election’s Amendment E? The JAIL-4-Judges act? How could you forget my favorite electoral whipping boy last year? It had such a cast of characters, including Bonnie “From California” Russell, Elvis “Jake” Hanes who is now wanted by Law enforcement authorities, Bill Stegmeier, South Dakota’s 4-star Jailer in Chief, and Ron Branson who talked [...]

Yes on 10 intimates that SDGOP is corrupt?

I saw an e-mail in the last day from the Yes on 10 crew. In it, they noted that one of their promoters, Susan Pisani, was elected to a position with SD Republican Women. Which was certainly nice that someone would be recognized for all their hard work within the GOP organization.
I don’t think there’s [...]

How Pelosi and Herseth blew the bailout. According to Karl Rove.

Watertown campaign signage

nancyturbakcrunchberry

I spent some time in Watertown this afternoon, and the yardsigns are out!
In my travels, just in the areas I drove by, Al Koistenen was about dead even with Turbak on the 4×8 signs. But when you factor the yard signs in, watch out. Al’s yard signs outnumber his opponent’s by about a factor of [...]

Not seen as a Financial Rescue Package, Bailout Fails

When the S&L crisis of a quarter century ago became evident, the Congressional leader of the S&L changes (U.S. Rep. St. Germain) was run out of Congress by his own party.  Today, the primary advocates of lightening of credit standards and acceptable risk parameters of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the leaders in designing [...]

Herseth recognized as “hot” politician. Behind Palin, of course.

What can I say about this except “MAXIM” men’s magazine, and the world’s 10 hottest politicians. You can figure out where it goes from there:
2. Sarah Palin, U.S.A.
Position: Governor of Alaska, GOP VP nominee
Party: Republican
After being crowned Miss Wasilla in 1984, Sarah Barracuda snatched up the mayoral seat 12 years later, garnering a groundswell of [...]

Happy Birthday to Mrs. PP

Happy Birthday wishes from myself and the SDWC to my long suffering wife, Micki.
I’d tell you how old she’s going to be, but even I know enough not to bring that kind of grief down on my head.
Best always, dear.

Argus on Dist. 12: Jerstad waffles on Abortion, Wick pins hopes on Lab

The Argus Leader is featuring the State Senate candidates in one of the hottest fall races as they profile district 12. As typical, Sandy Jerstad offers nominally coherent answers, and Hal Wick hits on what’s truly important:
Jerstad:
8. Do you approve or disapprove of Initiated Measure 11, which would ban all abortions with exceptions for the [...]

That’s not a good thing. Judge and former legislator arrested for DUI.

From a KSFY report:
Judge Sean Michael O’Brien was arrested Wednesday night after a Subway restaurant employee saw a man passed out behind the wheel of a pickup.
Read it all here.
That’s not a good thing. Especially from a person placed in such a high position of trust. I sincerely hope that he’s able to move past [...]

From one Superintendent to another.

Harrisburg School Superintendent Jim Holbeck was a Republican legislator for a brief moment. But you’d never know it as he howls about the state’s witness in the school lawsuit in an e-mail which was widely distributed among schools in the past few days. (You notice that he addresses this to the midsize schools):

Some thoughts on education in South Dakota

I took this while returning to Brookings from Pierre late this afternoon. I missed taking a photo of the sign that said “Vote for Joel Dykstra – Tim Johnson will retire with $1 Million” done in a similar manner, but I did catch this one talking about how the school lawsuit is all the Democrat’s [...]

So who won?

But he also sought to turn his age into an advantage. “There are some advantages to experience and knowledge and judgment,” he said. “And I honestly don’t believe that Sen. Obama has the knowledge or experience” to serve as commander in chief.
Okay, that pretty much sums up what I’ve thought all along. (read it here). [...]

Even the more liberal websites find Heidepriem disingenuous

From South DaCola:
I was quite amused last night when I saw the first ad by District 13 Senate candidate Scott Heidepriem. He slips on his Italian loafers, pulls up his designer jeans, loads up his man-purse with brochures and walks out of his McKennan Park three-story mansion to talk to the Common folk in his [...]

All the money is from inside South Dakota? Potential retribution? Prove it.

The ethically challenged proponents of Initiated Measure 10 kicked off their campaign today with enough propaganda to choke a horse. What am I talking about?
Butler said Measure 10 would prohibit politicians, lobbyists and government contractors from spending tax dollars on lobbying or political campaigns.
and..
Kephart said with the exception of a $10,000 donation from out of [...]

The Jerstad Salary Standards of Competency

Check out this survey response from State Senate Candidate Sandy Jerstad. In it, it seems as if she’s taking a good hard swipe against those in the teaching profession in South Dakota:
5. According to the latest school finance data from the US Census Bureau, the State of South Dakota’s share of K-12 public school funding [...]
