RUMOR ALERT: NO RAISES AGAIN FOR STATE EMPLOYEES
This rumor is coming straight out of Pierre today from an extremely reliable source, and it’s not going to be a very welcome message to State Employees.
What I’m hearing is that even with Obama’s bailout, the budget situation at South Dakota State Government is troublesome enough that state employee pay raises are a major items [...]
Hmmm… Higher Taxes or Budget cuts? Where do you think voters are going to weigh in
A good lesson for elected officials to heed as they prepare to go to Pierre this next year. As reported on KELOland.com:
About 78 percent of the voters opposed an opt out Tuesday which would have allowed the county to collect up to $500,000 more in taxes a year for five years. About 21 percent supported [...]
Lt. Governor Daugaard announces campaign tour
After running for Governor for two and a half years, Lt. Governor Dennis Daugaard is announcing that yes, he is running for Governor and has sent out e-mail notices indicating he is doing an announcement tour on Monday and Tuesday:
I’m writing to let you know that I will be officially announcing my candidacy for Governor [...]
While the pro-cap and taxers continue whining – let your representatives in Washington know what you think!
Predictably, those who support cap and tax are continuing their outrageous claims of job creation using gross numbers, and not the net of what would be left over after they start hammering the economy.
Well, while they’re complaining, take a moment to let your Senators know what you think about your utility rates going up, your [...]
Dear National Science Foundation. I never believed those grant applications, until one night, it happened to me!
This one was just too funny to ignore:
Employee misconduct investigations, often involving workers accessing pornography from their government computers, grew sixfold last year inside the taxpayer-funded foundation that doles out billions of dollars of scientific research grants, according to budget documents and other [...]

Obamacare: Failure to buy coverage is punishable by the IRS?
From the Wall Street Journal:
President Obama’s effort to deny that his mandate to buy insurance is a tax has taken another thumping, this time from fellow Democrats in the Senate Finance Committee.
Chairman Max Baucus’s bill includes the so-called individual mandate, along with what he calls a $1,900 “excise tax” if you don’t buy health insurance. [...]
Harsh criticism from the Great White North for Heidepreim over conflict of interest
I was looking at South Dakota entries in ballotpedia for upcoming ballot issues, and I stumbled across this article from back this last February regarding Scott Heidepriem and his actions in promoting a gaming measure in South Dakota.
Too bad I missed it then, as it was utterly scathing in it’s language towards the now Democratic [...]
Stop the presses…… Tim Rounds still might introduce a bill
Remember when I made this observation?
What’s going to happen with this measure next session? Much like past pronouncements from Representative Rounds (famously or infamously), after today and possibly tomorrow’s minor amount of press, you will never ever hear about it again. And session will come and go without any word of it being whispered.
Read that [...]
I think I noted that…
From the Hoghouseblog, Denise posts on Lib-a-palooza’s stop in Rapid City on behalf of Scott Heidepreim:
The wisdom of putting up these two unapologetic liberals to campaign in a South Dakota gubernatorial race is a question that will be debated for the next year. There is the danger that they might overshadow Heidepriem himself, who is [...]
Does absence make the heart grow fonder?
A light chuckle for this morning.
missme
Where is Stephanie on open government? On a short leash.
From the Hill:
Five Democrats have signed a discharge petition to force a vote on a measure changing House rules to require that legislation be posted for 72 hours online before a vote.
Democratic Reps. Walt Minnick (Idaho), Brian Baird (Wash), Dan Boren (Okla.), Parker Griffith (Ala.) and Gene Taylor (Miss.) have all signed the petition, which [...]
Cap & tax will create 5000 SD Jobs? Well, that only leaves us down by nearly 1000.
shenanigan (plural shenanigans)
Trickery, games; skulduggery. To “call”, “claim” or “declare” shenanigans is to rhetorically and ironically label something as officially deceitful, improper, or otherwise incorrect.
“The advertisement said it would cost $50 but they charged me $75 at the register. I declare shenanigans.” The speaker passes off the statement as having some sort of implied official [...]
Cap and Tax will create 5000 jobs, I’ll respect you in the morning, that dress doesn’t make you look fat, and other statements you shouldn’t believe when you hear them.
My grandfather who passed away a couple of years ago had a penchant for his copenhagen, and for telling bawdy tales that sometimes stretched the limits of what you should probably believe. In other words, he was good at telling “a whopper” of a story that you might want to bring a healthy amount of [...]
More signs there is an effort to re-open the closed Bradley bill saga
From the Rapid City Journal, Kevin Woster explores the proposition that the Sioux Tribes are looking for Obama to return a huge chunk if the Black Hills to them:
Sympathetic signs from President Barack Obama have inspired hope among Sioux spiritual and government leaders that some federal land in the Black Hills might one day be [...]
Quick Scoop – NSF to give 29 Million to develop mine
I just heard the gov announced during a dinner at Mt. Rushmore that SD has received a 29 Million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop the mine science lab to the 7000 foot level.
This comes at the Buffalo Roundup event where donors, out of state media, staffers, and others gather at the tourism [...]
Back from Pierre..
I made a back and forth run to Pierre today, and I’m finally back and at the computer.
I spent time meeting up with old friends, setting up a booth for the campaign, and cleaning out the ancestral home in Pierre as we prepare to put it a six bedroom, poured concrete home on the market. [...]
There’s no more sincere form of flattery than imitation
Despite her political affiliation, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin apparently would like nothing more than to enjoy John Thune’s popularity.
Why do I say this?
Well, she’s taking his positions and ideas, and parroting them as her own.
Case in point:
June 11th, 2009 – U.S. Senator John Thune today introduced the Government Ownership Exit Plan Act (S.1242), a bill that [...]
And people wonder why everyone got their undies in a twist over the Obama school speech…
I don’t seem to recall teachers indoctrinating kids to presidential idolatry during any recent Republican administrations…
Knudson promises secret ballot legislation in ‘10
Fresh off the wire this noon hour, Dave Knudson has come out saying that he will be introducing legislation which would send to the voters a possible constitutional amendment to protect South Dakotans right to a secret ballot while unionizing when the Legislature comes back in to session in January.
Knudson, during the news conference, states that the notion [...]
