Governor-elect Noem Seeks Public Input for District 9 House Nomination

PIERRE, S.D. – Governor-elect Kristi Noem is seeking public input as she looks to appoint a service-first South Dakotan to fill the District 9 House vacancy. The opening was created after current Rep. Deb Peters announced she would not be taking the oath of office in January. Peters will continue serving until January 4, 2019. Governor-elect Noem will appoint a legislator to serve during the 2019 and 2020 legislative sessions.

“State legislators are ambassadors for their hometowns, so it’s critical District 9 has a service-first representative who is willing to tackle big things for their community,” said Governor-elect Noem. “I look forward to collaborating with folks in District 9 as I appoint a qualified, dedicated public servant to represent this district.”

Those wishing to be considered for the appointment, or to offer nominations, should email Rachel Graves at [email protected]. Nominations should include the candidate’s name, current physical address, telephone number, and relevant background information. All nomination materials must be submitted by December 12, 2018.

District 9 includes northwestern Minnehaha County, including the Hartford, Humboldt, Crooks and the Wall Lake area. The district also includes an area in north and northwestern Sioux Falls, encompassing Southeast Technical Institute, Hayward Elementary School and the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. A map of the district is available here.

  1. Hey maybe the Minnehaha county party can get together and tell the governor what to do here also! NOT

    1. Rest assured that will not happen. We know the law.

The law is pretty clear that the Governor appoints the replacement of an empty legislative seat.

        1. Dave is correct as usual. District 9 needs a strong, conservative voice; I’m confident the legislator Kristi appoints will be superb.

  2. Oh yeah winning is having some proud pond scum Anon write a mean note anonymously about you Schoenbeck. LOL

  3. 1) Rave and Noem are close friends.

    2) Rave offered Deb the job thereby creating a vacancy in the house.

    3) Noem gets to handpick Deb’s replacement.

    =

    4) Cronyism

    1. Wow. That is hardly a theory but it is certainly a conspiracy.

Plus, Rave is friends with a lot of people. Noem is friends with a lot of people. It would be odd they weren’t friends considering they served together.

Second, it is ludicrous he’d offer such a mission critical job for the purpose of removing a Noem supporter to create an opportunity for Noem to appoint another one.

Third, yep. It is in the Constitution that the Governor gets to fill legislative vacancies. You are sure a smart one.

Fourth, I know life is more fun to you to have a conspiracy but 99% of the time Occam’s Razor applies- Rave hired who he thought was best. Peters decided this was a good move for her and/or her family. Noem would prefer having her friend Peters in the Legislature but will do her job and appoint a replacement as required by the Constitution.

      1. Tara… I’m not sure how anyone can take a statement like that seriously. That’s like asking her to pick bigfoot.

        1. Pat, I really don’t know what your problem with Lora Hubbel is. Now don’t start the name calling. She fought against common core and Obama Care. She would mix it up and fight for conservative legislation. Remember, this isn’t a personality contest.

          1. Tara, I read Lora’s Facebook page today. She’s got a long post in which she accuses Bush 41 of having engaged in “Masonic ritualistic child abuse and sacrifice.”

            1. Well. another missed opportunity. Ross Perot would have gone done as one of the greatest Presidents of all time. But the Rebloodlicans and Democrits are to co-dependent to their parties to vote for a real candidate for the people.

              1. All they do is go camping and pee in the woods, Steve.

I think they roast hot dogs and marshmallows too.

    2. The bigger story is that Rave and Peters are close friends, and now they get to work closely together again. She is pulling a Richter since she isn’t getting her way with committee assignments in the conservative-led House, and her long-time friend Rave comes to bail her out !

      1. I thought you said it was capitalism, Steve.
Any arrangement involving people who know each other is suspect. If you don’t know each other before you start working together, you get to know each other, and once you are well acquainted you start conspiring together in sinister plots targeting other people you don’t know yet.
But everybody Steve knows is conspiring against him. Nobody is conspiring with him. It’s like he’s in The Twilight Zone.

        1. Fascism, capitalism…the same thing. Just another version of the ruling elite obtaining more control over the resources that create and enlarge their wealth. Another misconception is that capitalism is conservative as it is mistaken to be “free market”.

          1. and this ladies and gentleman is why Steve will never be part of the mainstream….he knows more than 1000s of scholars throughout history

            1. Your are right, I will never be part of the mainstream. That is because most believe the deceptions of so-called scholars.

  4. Representatives of the people who leave office under such circumstances ought to have to pay a fine for willful failure to serve out their term.

    1. Fine them? Our legislature is made up of part time servants. They are good, hard working people whether you agree with them or not. Life changes; elections change the make up of those serving; families change. If you’d like to fine them for making decisions “under such circumstances” then make them full time year-round legislators and pay them accordingly. Bet you don’t like that idea!

      1. We just finished an election cycle. She ran for office and hasn’t served a day of the term her constituents trusted her to serve out. That is a serious breach of trust. There should be repercussions.

          1. What happens if a member of the National Guard, a citizen soldier who volunteered to serve part time, refuses to show up for their period of service?

Why should elected officials who have volunteered to serve not be required to live up to their responsibilities?

      2. I agree, Betty. The too often expectation of our legislators to put being a part-time legislator above family and career is a form of ingratitude.

        I thank all

  5. If retention of legislators is a goal, the solution is to eliminate the term limits and make the positions full-time with six-figure salaries and state employee benefits. This would ensure that they would give the taxpayers their undivided attention and loyalty.

If we aren’t willing to make those changes, we will have to live with the fact our legislators have other responsibilities.
