PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard issued the following statement today in response to the charges filed against individuals involved with Mid-Central Cooperative:

“Today’s announcement shows that Secretary Schopp was right to cancel Mid Central’s management contract and that there was misconduct that went beyond incompetence to actively attempting to deceive the Department and to undermine audits and oversight. I appreciate the work of the Attorney General and the Auditor General in getting to the bottom of this.”

  1. It only took her 3 years of financial incompetence to make such a decision. Such foresight…../s

If Daugaard wants to restore any integrity to the department, he needs to let her go. End of story.

  2. There’s so much more to SD GEAR UP and MCEC that has already been reported on by KELO and in public documents available through Internet searches. The SD Dept. of Ed. had ethical (and possibly legal) problems itself in administering its GEAR UP grants from the time the first grant was submitted in 2005. Schopp inherited a bad situation and failed to fix it, but it was there when – and long before – she arrived in the Secretary’s office.
