John Thune rises in senate leadership

John Thune has entered new territory for a Republican from South Dakota.

When Sen. John Thune assumes his position this week as the third-ranked Republican in the Senate, he will solidify his position as the highest-ranking Republican senator in South Dakota history.

In fact, no Republican senator from South Dakota has reached similar heights since Yankton?s very own Sen. Chan Gurney served as Senate Republican Conference vice-chair in the 1940s. That is the fifth-ranked position in Senate leadership. Gurney was a senator from 1939-1951.

In contrast to Senator Daschle’s time in leadership, South Dakotans can take comfort in the fact that Senator Thune provides leadership while also voting for South Dakota values. How nice to have both.

Why? Because you said so, “Bill”? How nice indeed. Just make sure you bring a check with you when you request a meeting.
