Legislator to propose legalizing (low quality) pot growing in SD

From KCCR News:

An industrial crop that is being imported from Canada on a daily basis, effectively denying South Dakota farmers an opportunity to compete and share in the profits of our neighbors to the north, might change if South Dakota Representative Elizabeth May has any say on the matter.

The production and cultivation of hemp may be coming before the full legislature next session.

May, who is a rancher near Kyle, says that farmers across the state have been asking her to allow them another rotational crop to grow…

Read it all here.

I’m thinking that one is destined for the 41st legislative day as soon as it’s introduced.

  1. How much is imported (lbs. and $ value), what are the uses, and who are the importers?

Simple information that I’m sure the sponsor and supporters have easily at hand.

  2. I have no problem with legalizing pot provided that all potheads have zero protections under our laws, no claims to any services or benefits from any government, and no standing in our courts. I would be more than happy to make that deal. Maybe then they would start to understand the totality of their contribution to society. Exactly how is one to notice the illegal pot in the field from the legal pot? That is the point. Isn’t Rep. May?

      1. Legalize it all. Will help economy I’m in to profit off it….,,let the people who need it use it. The tax alone could fix our roads and highways with plenty left over

Spencer says he has no problem with decriminalizing marijuana provided it’s legal to—among other things—murder those who use it. Isn’t Spencer the vice president and assistant treasurer of South Dakota Right to Life?

Please ladies, carry those babies to term so Spencer can determine whether their “contribution to society” justifies their existence.

      1. decriminalizing ? keep laws the same or stronger for pot. potheads will eventually learn.

  3. I agree the legalization of Industrial Hemp is long overdue. I’s environmentally green, has many applications with more being researched and there is money to be made by our farmers both Native and non-Native. You can’t get high off hemp.

  4. Goodness she is a total embarrassment to the “gop” I do not understand her at all.

With people being killed by dogs on reservations, 200 people trying to commit suicide she wants to legalize hemp.

Way to have your priorities straight Liz.

  5. I grew up with it, mom and I had matching espadrilles, and all the canvas sails and ropes were hemp. It held up when exposed to salt water. Heavier than nylon though.

  6. The growing and use of hemp helped us win WWII. Cheers to Liz ! Maybe if the people on the res were given some real economic opportunities they wouldn’t be so desperate and destitute.

  7. Again though the wishes of a State sponsoring a new growing business are throttled by the Federal Government’s archaic rules outlawing the cultivation of Hemp. Baler twine cost us $22 a bundle 8 years ago. Today it is hovering around $50. And South America produces most of that product.

(Hey PorterLansing you helped my first censure to happen here.) keeping it on point from here on out PP!

      1. PP it was 100% deserved and off topic totally. Acting as a Conservative blog Sniper has advantages and some disadvantages. Thank you for allowing me 99.9% advantage here.

  8. Hemp is amazing. Can’t wait to start growing it next spring. Want to build with it too. Check out Original Green Distribution. MTI, get on the cutting edge. Education, education, education. Come on folks this is an ag state. Don’t let our bought off politicians hold you back.

  9. Since Dec. 16, 2014 Marijuana and Hemp is legal on ALL Federal Lands and Indian Reservations.. it is a tribal council decision.. current federal law prohibits interstate transportation of ‘raw produce’.. we, South Dakotans have an opportunity to become involved in the disciplined growth of infrastructure, commerce, education and evolution.. we need to instruct our legislators to invest in production plants, refineries, textile manufactures on a STATE level.. Legality is merely a ‘blind ploy’ to keep dissention active.
