Legislature sets summer studies

From KCCR News:

Legislators had the opportunity to vote on topics for the board to consider for study. The subjects they brought forward ranged from workforce development to the expansion of Medicaid.

The board ended up selecting the two most popular topics: a study of the functions, spending and financing of county government and a review of different aspects of the High School Activities Association such as its oversight, history and authority.

  1. Seriously ? Those are the 2 most important issues to the majority of our legislators .

    1. As an incumbant legislator, perhaps you could explain the process as to how topics are determined for summer study. Those of us not affiliated with the process may not know the answer.

  2. Any legislator or legislative committee can suggest topics for study. LRC then sends us a list of the suggestions submitted. We then get to prioritize our 5 favorites listing them 1 -5. We can also indicate if we want to volunteer to serve on any of the studies on our priority list. The results are then given to the executive board to make the final decision.

  3. Strike three! I’m out.

My third attempt to get the legislature to think through some contingencies to better ready SD from and economic collapse has failed.

Last year it got bumped so we could study wine distribution in SD. This year it is more important that we drag on this tired transgender-in-school-sports issue some more.

We are walking on egg shells right now with our spring and summer trips to Greece because the economy there is collapsing. But those things would never happen here. I’m not bitter, just shaking my head at what is more important to my colleagues. It is hard to sound an alarm without being an alarmist.
