More debate postscript. Johnson pointed out Krebs votes to raise taxes & fees over 200 times.

In reviewing last night’s debate where congressional hopeful Shantel Krebs took a sharp turn at the end and attacked her opponent Dusty Johnson, I did catch that Krebs’ last minute attack wasn’t the only jab thrown.

As part of the debate, Johnson did get in the point that Krebs’ legislative record included over 200 tax and fee increases.  I managed to get the source document they’re relying on for that information, and it’s quite the list:

SHANTEL KREBS
Tax and Fee Increase Summary

Secretary Shantel Krebs served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2005-2010 and the South Dakota Senate from 2011-2014.  Secretary Krebs supported multiple tax or fee increases every single year she was in the legislature.  In fact, during that time, Secretary Krebs supported more than 200 Tax and Fee increases on the people of South Dakota.

28 thoughts on “More debate postscript. Johnson pointed out Krebs votes to raise taxes & fees over 200 times.”

  1. I’m no fan of Shantel but I wonder how many fee and tax increases Dusty supported while he was Chief via the legislative task force. A bunch I would say but he won’t claim any.

    1. I’m no fan of Shantel either, but she mentioned he raised our utilities several times while in Pierre. If I recall, he said some of these 200 taxes were necessary. He was trying to be nice, the nice guys don’t win, they get walked on.

I’m not on the fence with my vote, but many people our and what Shantel said about Dusty doesn’t help him and what Dusty said about Shantel doesn’t help her.

    2. Daugaard had a “no new taxes” pledge that he kept during his first term while Dusty was there. He explicitly rejected the pledge when he ran again because he said we needed to raise the gas tax.

  2. Most of these are user fee increases. If the cost to deliver the services goes up over time, there are three choices:

    1) Raise the fee and have the user pay the additional cost (many times the users are advocating the increase because they want the service).

    2) Have the general taxpayer (not the user) pay the additional cost.

    3) Reduce the scope of the program even if the users want the service.

Whether it be Tapio’s rant before the debate, Shantel’s rant during the debate (and supporting ad), or this, I don’t like any of them because they don’t move the ball forward on legitimate discussion of issues.

    1. Yes, many are fees. Some are flat out taxes, though. She can’t explain away all of these.

    2. You lie, you like the good guy;) Well, we all thought he was a good guy turns out we were wrong:(

  3. She’s such a phoney. Her ridiculous trump campaign is not even close to her liberal voting history.

    1. Tapio knows there is nothing better than Krebs on Johnson and Johnson on Krebs crime.

The worst kind of crime is Krebs or Johnson on Tapio crime.

    2. What about Kristi? You should ask Tapio if he was ever able to get Kristi to support Trump before the election.

Now she is the biggest fan.

  4. This is so good for Tapio. The mask is off. She is the biggest liberal in this race.

    1. The calculation must be that Johnson and Krebs are in a tight battle for the undecideds and Tapio is irrelevant or has pulled Krebs down enough that Johnson is willing to take the nice guy image and set it aside in order to win.

If Krebs hurts Johnson and Johnson hurts Krebs and tapio is out of contention it tells me this will only escalate.

It also tells me Tapio miscalculated and should have campaigned on a nice guy business person image and been Mike Rounds. The undecideds are more likely to not vote than vote for tapio because of his nuttiness. But if he was reasonable he could have taken undecideds, and dusty and Krebs voters.

  5. I think if these 3 continue in this manner, then Bjorkman will not have a tough time getting elected. Most of these increases seem to be filing fee/licensure increases. And if memory serves me – some of these increases were the first increases in years. Mr. Jones is correct in his assessment, in my opinion.

    1. Yes he will. Do you guys remember a real negative campaign? No punches thrown this year until 12 days out.

  6. Do you have some information you have about Dusty using the state plane or is that just a statement?

    1. Watch the SDPB debate from last night. There’s some jabs throughout, but right at the end Shantel lays him out.

      1. Yeah she’s really courageous. Hitting him when he can’t reapond. What a coward.

  7. These 3 are about to take it to the streets.

2 of the 3 will have to find a new goal in life.

  8. The legislature and the governor including Dusty approved these increases so don’t blame her.
If you support the sales tax then you support a tax increase every year that inflation occurs. These static taxes and fees don’t move with inflation.

  9. Shantel and Dusty both have big war chests to battle it out. Let the truth be told!

  10. Republicans are the first group to complain about higher taxes but are the first ones to complain about potholes and praising a president that starts a war. You can not have smooth roads and war unless you pay your taxes.

    1. Yes you can. We do it all the time. That’s why Booker Noem’s debt is $23k higher than when his mom went to DC 8 years ago. We spend and borrow.

At least in SD we raise taxes to pay for what we want. We dont go to China and borrow for a new teacher raise.

People will say no if they have to pay for things. Why say no when you can borrow without raising taxes?

It’s just like credit cards and why 60% of this nation doesnt have $500 in an emergency fund.
