Rounds co-sponsoring act to build the wall on southern border

From Facebook, US Senator Mike Rounds is noting that he’s co-sponsoring an act to help build a southern border wall by closing loopholes that allow illegal immigrants to receive federal benefits:

What are your thoughts?

  1. Why build a wall when a majority of illegals don’t even jump the border? More come here on work and student visas. I believe Trump requested for even more cheap laborers this year since it was booming at the resort.

      1. Are you suggesting that if you built a wall around Chicago, their gun control laws would work?

      2. True, Dave, but I am also against people simply walking across our border to work and/or receive government assistance. They don’t have a right to come into MY country without following the laws in place. The Democrat party, generally speaking, seems to not value citizenship very highly as they seem to want to give it away. To them being an American isn’t that great or important.

  2. Sad to see that Sen. Rounds has caved to Trump when he could actually stand up to the takeover of the GOP by this crook. Rounds has come a very long way. When Trump was the presumptive nominee, he and other SD GOP leaders could barely bring themselves to utter Trump’s name because he was such an embarrassment to the party. Now, even though there is likely no threat to Rounds from the Trumpsters, Rounds discards any semblance of intellectual objective thought.

Most experts agree better border security can be accomplished in any number of ways other than a physical wall, which is a disaster on so many levels. Of course, why wouldn’t a real estate developer, turned brand marketer see it any other way than a physical wall to which he can attach his brand. If this wall is ever built, it will be nothing more than an albatross. Sure, we elected him with all of his faults, but still, Mexico was going to pay for this monstrosity. What’s different now?

Do we really think there is any real savings that come with this? How much in federal benefits go to the illegal immigrants working in South Dakota’s ag sector? (Who do you think milks all those cows?)

    1. Many in the GOP could not bring themselves to utter Trump’s name because they thought he was toxic and would lose bigly. Turns out he won and won in a pretty large electoral win. Also, many in the GOP are finding his policies are working. Personally, I like most of the things happening under President Trump’s leadership. I did not think I was going to like him, but the more he does in office, the more I like the results. I believe I read that where the wall is in place, there has not been anyone able to climb over it.

    2. Which experts are those? Please cite some links or something; I’d be interested to read them.

I think a physical barrier would help immensely. I’m not sure why a physical barrier is such an alarming thought to the left; is it offensive to those who are not citizens?

  3. Unless one likes the chaotic status quo with regard to immigration (legal and illegal), the only way we will ever get comprehensive immigration reform begins with border security (which includes a southern border wall). Pretending otherwise is a delusion. I can’t glean from Dave Z.’s comments whether he likes the current status quo or he is delusional. But it is one of those.

And Senator Rounds, who is at the center of immigration reform discussions, understands this. Politics is the art of the possible plus the hard work to find and develop common ground. It is not spouting out delusions from your basement.

    1. Delusional? Sure. My point is that an actual physical structure is not necessary and that increased border security can be accomplished by other means. Nowhere did I indicate a support for the status quo. We shall see what “common ground” really means to this president and his enablers. Compromise and the “art of the possible” has been elusive to our very stable genius. Spouting delusions from my basement? Really.

      1. Okay, we can tell you hate Trump, so we know where you stand. Why not a border wall? The building thereof would create jobs, and I thought the Dems were always into infrastructure; anything to spend taxpayer money and look like they support the middle class.

I think you need to ask the Democrats what common ground means to them. They are so blinded by hatred that Hillary lost that they can’t find common ground on much of anything.

        1. Build a wall simply for the sake of building a wall? Whatever happened to the notion of reducing wasteful spending? I’m actually a Republican, but as I stand on the sidelines and watch, there is actually more vitriol coming out of Trump regarding Hilary, Obama, and just about everyone with a “D” attached to their name. Have you not seen the clips of numerous rallies (“Lock Her Up”) or endless tweets that describe his enemies list (the jail theme)?

This is not normal by any measure at all, and no way the federal government should be run.

  4. I think this positions him really well for 2020. Great move. Anybody have an idea who will challenge him?

  5. Thank you for your support of sovereignty, Senator Rounds; now try to convince the loony left in DC that this is a sovereign nation and deserves protecting.

  6. FROM THE LIAR IN CHIEF: — ON THE BORDER WALL … at 11:22 a.m.: “Could somebody please explain to the Democrats (we need their votes) that our Country losses 250 Billion Dollars a year on illegal immigration, not including the terrible drug flow. Top Border Security, including a Wall, is $25 Billion. Pays for itself in two months. Get it done!”

THE TRUTH: The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy released a report in February 2016, stating that 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States are paying annually an estimated amount of $11.64 billion in state and local taxes, “on average an estimated 8 percent of their incomes, including nearly $7 billion in sales and excise taxes and $3.6 billion in property taxes.” They are, in economic terms, productive citizens, and pay a higher effective tax rate than the top 1 percent income bracket. That alone is NOT the primary reason they should be embraced as neighbors and coworkers. But it dissolves the myth that immigrants do nothing but drain public coffers.

    1. Truth-teller… now tell us the truth about information the Center for Immigration Studies put out showing in 2014, 63% of non-citizen households accessed welfare programs? Imagine the data for 2018.

Does this show a drain for public coffers?
I wonder what our homeless vets think?

      1. Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for government assistance. The study you refer to looked only at “households headed by undocumented immigrants”, and used that to throw shade on their US-born CITIZEN children. Don’t like birthright citizenship? Change the Constitution… good luck!

        1. The study states that “of non-citizens in Census Bureau data, roughly half are in the country illegally. Non-citizens also include long-term temporary visitors (e.g. guestworkers and foreign students) and permanent residents who have not naturalized (green card holders).”

          Did you read the study?

I don’t like that our vets are being pushed out on to the streets while tax dollars go to give illegal aliens free everything.

    1. Everybody right of center is recognized as a right wing hate group just ask the ADL, SPLC and ACLU.
