The shadow campaign for Gov 2018 keeps bubbling under the surface.

As I poke at the Democrats for having absolutely nothing in 2016, because yhey offer the real possibility of no  contested statewide races; I keep hearing more and more on a couple of the players in 2018 as they attempt to move the chess pieces around on the table to try to start the game in their own favor.

From the reports I’m getting, Marty Jackley and Mark Mickelson are the most active, as they’re going around talking to people & asking for their support.  I had the second or third recent report of them making the rounds.

And as I’m told in a case or two they’re also trying to draw people away from the other guy.

While they’re doing this, Kristi Noem has her nose to the grindstone, and is worrying about her upcoming 2016 Congressional race.

With all this early jockeying, what I think would be really interesting is to find out where people are today on their commitments.  Are they a firm yes, and they’re willing to put their name on the dotted line and say “yes, I’m on team ____.” Or is the support of those elected officials that the candidates seem to covet far more elusive at this point?

Anyone care to make their declaration?

  1. I firmly commit to vote Republican in the 2018 Gubernatorial General Election! Is that enough, Pat? I know it’s early…

    1. Uncontested elections are very bad things, and SB 69 is an underhanded effort to make them even more commonplace in South Dakota than they already are.

  2. Will Lora Hubbel run again? If so, which party will she represent or be an Independent?

  3. Huether is the worst (and by worst I mean we know he is running and a pretty decent candidate) the Democrats will do in 2018. Stephanie is the best (and by best I mean she could actually be the favorite in a general election).

Mickelson would be the hardest for Stephanie to defeat. All of the Republicans would defeat Huether but he would probably make the race 55-45 in a neutral year.

  4. I could not support Jackley foir anything. He is no different than Holder at the national level. He is supposed to be the chief law enforcement officer for the entire state. Instead, he is only the chief defense lawyer for the administration, even the cesspool at DSS. All he does is rubber stamp the administration and party no matter how crooked, dishonest, brazen, or lawless they are.

    1. Lora Hubbel spent the last election doing suicide re-enactments as part of her campaign for Lt. Governor..

  5. i’ll wait to see who the democrats put up, then decide whether to vote republican early that tuesday or later in the day.

  6. The Benda suicide scandal was under-investigated and is a black eye to South Dakota. Raising nat’l awareness to the issue seems appropriate.

    1. ” Raising nat’l awareness to the issue seems appropriate.”

Raising awareness about comments arising from ignorance also seems appropriate.

Re-enacting suicide for political again seems highly inappropriate, but that would require some background knowledge of Hubbel, and the more Porter types the more odd he seems..

    2. I agree with Porter. The Benda “suicide” was about as clear-cut as Vince Foster’s. Too many inconsistencies. I don’t believe the BS about family concerns. H’s dead for Pete’s sake, and he was divorced. If you’ve got nothing to hide, release the findings !

  7. It’s pretty well known that this was a cover up. Look at the roadblocks thrown in front of Bob Mercer who is trying to get more legitimate information regarding this. If there is nothing to hide and release the information. Otherwise they are trying to blame it all and bury it all with a dead guy. How convenient.

  8. Attorney General Jackley would have been a shoo-in 3-4 years ago, but I agree with those above.. the appearances of his covering for current and past administration as well as the Aberdeen Mette case is dooming him.

Mark Mickelson is a sharp man but he is a flaming moderate. I bet Lynn DiSanto would make an interesting and compelling candidate.

      1. I’m just afraid the crazies like Bill Napoli are going to challenge Noem and Thune in 16. Stace for congress and Napoli for senate? CrAzY!
