“The American people deserve to have their voices heard on the nomination of the next Supreme Court justice, who could fundamentally alter the direction of the Supreme Court for a generation.”

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) issued the following statement after President Obama nominated Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court:

“For the last seven years, President Obama has attempted to circumvent Congress and the will of the American people with unconstitutional, overreaching regulations. The Senate Republican majority was elected to be a check and balance to President Obama.

“The American people deserve to have their voices heard on the nomination of the next Supreme Court justice, who could fundamentally alter the direction of the Supreme Court for a generation. Since the next presidential election is already underway, the next president should make this lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.”

    1. My God, the hostility. With your attitude, it will be a joy to clog up this procedure exactly the same way rabid democrats (Biden, Kennedy, Reid) refused an up/down vote for several of Bush’s appellate court picks last decade. Idiot.

      Thank you, John Thune!

    2. Yes, those voices were heard–unfortunately, Obama has not heard them.

Obama’s deafness has lost more US house seats, US senate seats, governorships, state legislatures, state legislative seats, and municipal officeholders than any president of any party…EVER.

And so, he nominates some poor schlub to try again to further his lifeless agenda.

Obama will trample any law, and constitution, and any person (like this nominee) to further divide this country.

  1. Senator, this is NOT what the people want. It is your CONSTITUTIONAL duty to allow an up or down vote on President Obama’s pick. You have such hostility on the issue. I believe that the Senate will regret that they have taken this attitude.

    1. What short memories you libs have! Biden and Obama both said that no votes should be taken on SCOTUS nominees when Bush was president. Now that the shoe is on the other foot—not so much! Hypocrites!

        1. The job of the senate is to be a check on a president’s actions.

Thune & Rounds and the rest of the Reps. are doing just that.

          And thank GOD.

            1. –Where was GOD when Obama was elected?

God was distracted watching & listening to Obama’s personal “Christian” pastor, Jeremiah Wright:

“The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

              1. Well then, since God is so easily distracted, I guess it’s up to us to look to the next highest power – the Constitution. What does that say? Oh, yeah. The President shall nominate the justices of the SCOTUS with the advice and consent of the Senate. The President just did his job, now the Senate needs to do theirs.

    2. How amusing. Such hostility? Your drama is underwhelming! Checks and balances also include rules. If you don’t like the rules you should pursue changing them. I for one just watch it play out…join the crowd. This Tit for Tat process is as old as the constitution. It’s the way it’s supposed to be. The guy in the big white house is not a dictator as much as he portends to be one.

  2. We who live in South Dakota appreciate that you are speaking for US, your constituants! It is not a popularity contest when you are representing our State, you are there because we sent you to tell Washington what our State believes in. Thank you for keeping your South Dakota VALUES!

    1. *Constituents. South Dakota values? Embezzling money? Men abusing women? Hateful legislation from state legislators? Yep, those are some great values. Are you living in the 1950s?

          1. Nice comeback;) We’ve tried other states even a couple countries in Europe. We prefer the values, morals and principles So.Dak. stays true to. Just as Holmes & Zikmund have consistently displayed.
            God bless America.

            1. Hahahah, values, morals and principles of SoDak. So funny I blew coffee out of my mouth so I could laugh. Is inflating the cost of a car repair just to rip off a customer a SD value? Is robbing or stealing from your fellow S. Dakotans good morals? Do you live in a van down by the Missouri River?

        1. I was born and raised in South Dakota. I’m not going anywhere. You, however, are free to leave. I’ll be happy to help you round up boxes. If you want to live in the 1950s, you have a LONG journey ahead of you.

  3. John, how about the convention ? Will the people deserve to have their voices heard ?

    1. I can feel the desparation in your statement. I know you think the ‘country is at stake’. But your party is in peril.

  4. You suck, John. That’s why it’s always so damned windy in South Dakota. Please be quiet.

  5. Please quit fighting! Nothing good ever comes from FIGHTING! Just do what the constitution says and forget about it being an election year! Please and thank you!

  6. Dear Senator Thune… Correct me if I’m wrong, but “the people” voted Obama in for a second term. They have spoken. Stop the obstruction. It’s taking you all down. The citizens of our country are angry.

  7. John Thune is correct.
He is assuring us that our grand children have a voice in Our government. He is NOT GOING TO DO ANY THING till 2024 because He believes that we should not do any thing till they have a chance speak!

In the interim Mitch will get taller as he sits on Bro Johns shoulders . Guess why you can’t see Bro Johns head? Bro Mike is close behind as he begs to take Bro Johns place.
It is so nice to see So Dakotans willing to carry the problems of OUR government on their shoulders.
