A bold prediction, or setting up his opponent for a fail?

from the Associated Press:

Noem campaign consultant Justin Brasell said he’s pleased with the fundraising pace for the quarter and that the congresswoman’s cash on hand total “puts her far and away in the best position she’s ever been in to start a new election cycle.”

and…

Minnehaha County Commissioner Jeff Barth, a Democrat and veteran South Dakota political observer, said Noem is “absolutely” an easier target for Democrats than Thune. He said the party should announce its candidates for both races at Saturday’s McGovern Day 2015, which is the largest annual gathering for South Dakota Democrats and this year features an appearance from Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Read it here.

So, is Jeff Barth intimating they will announce opponents…. Or is he saying the Democrats should have opponents, and setting up Ann Tornberg for failure?

We’ll see.

  1. Barth said the Democrats “should announce its candidates for both races at Saturday’s McGovern Day 2015.”

Is he saying this is going to happen, or that he thinks it should happen? You can read it either way.

  2. Barth is right. Noem’s 99.9% chance or reelection is “absolutely” smaller than Thune’s 100% chance of reelection. I am not sure why Barth feels the need to inflate these mathematical realities with his quote. I also agree that both should have opponents. The Democrats need to find their best and brightest up and comers and dispatch them into the breach as quickly as possible.

    1. I disagree. Noem is a good candidate but she is polarizing to the SD electorate. Democrats should be able to get 43-45% against her automatically with a weak Varilek type.

      1. she’s only polarizing in that the state’s democrats hate any officeholder who isn’t a democrat. so let’s qualify that.

        1. Not true. She is polarizing because she defeated the democrats darling SHS. Some people will never get over that but it makes it so some are not on your side.

          1. So, she stirs up “bitterness” among Dems, that the Dems prefer to describe as “polarizing”?

            Got it.

    1. Go ahead and primary her. She will win big time. And then in the general she will win big time. So she will not be any more conservative than she is now. She is really not that bad, but if you think you can do better, why don’t you run or convince someone to run? If it is a two way race with Stace Nelson, he will come in third. He has already burned his bridges in the SD Republican party.

      1. That’s not what I hear. The longer nothing is done about “getting rid of the Department of Education” or Obamacare, or actually opposing Obama? The more Republicans mutter about the lack of action by a lot of big talkers.

Nelson backed his talk up with actual action. I was told there was no one that worked harder on conservative bills drafted a sponsored then Nelson. You always knew where he stood whether you agreed with him or not.

        1. That’s interesting. I was told there was nobody who spent more time in the bathroom avoiding tough votes that Stace Nelson. He has alienated just about everyone except for Cory. Regardless of what you think should be done about Obamacare and the Department of Education, the House has done some positive things on those fronts. It is in the Senate that the backbone seems to be missing. Perhaps Stace should primary John Thune?

          1. Nelson did more to hurt conservatives than help them. He’s toxic. Conservatives are making less noise but getting more done in Pierre without him.

    2. She is SOOOOOO bad, I would actually welcome carpetbagger Herseth-Sandlin back in that seat. Aside from caving on every campaign promise– from stopping Obama Care to giving her vote to approve Amnesty for illegals– her only accomplishment has been to get suckers and chumps to make campaign contributions. She is the Hillary Clinton of South Dakotaville…..

    1. I’ve heard libertarians are trying to recruit Aaron Heidelberger to run against her in the general.

  3. So it looks like whoever told Ellis that there was going to be an announcement was delusional? Or the Dems are so pathetic that they told Ellis that in an attempt to pressure someone to pull the trigger and it failed

  4. Barth is like a fart – makes a little noise, sometimes stinks, but in the end there’s no substance to anything he says. The D’s “should” have and do a lot. They don’t because they’re in shambles.

  5. Barth is the kind of dem who wins in SD. He’s a populist guy and a working mans dem. He’s never going to win but he’s got a better message than Tornberg and the lefties pushing for extremist Obama policies.
