Board of Regents reply to Rep. Qualm on Campus Free Speech

After observing incidents squelching of free speech on South Dakota campuses, South Dakota free speech advocates have been adamant that the violence and suffocation of free speech that has taken place in Berkeley and other places won’t be allowed to happen here.

If you recall, GOP House Majority Leader Lee Qualm sent the Board of Regents a letter with some pretty specific questions.

And now the Regents have responded:

  1. Great! Will the Islamaphobes & Xenophobes bring in more hate speakers? KKK? to the state’s institutions of higher learning?

    1. Will the Democrats continue to be tolerant except to those who don’t hold their viewpoint. Get informed before you start posting talking points from the idiots like Hillary, Holder, Waters, Schumer and the other intolerant leaders of the left.

I don’t support the KKK, Xenophobia, or Islamaphobia, but to label everyone you don’t agree with as a bigot is getting tiresome. If you are too stupid to defend your own viewpoint at least have the graciousness to admit it instead of trying to label others who are smarter and make more sense than you.

      1. Should we be afraid of Democrat men covered with white hoods, riding horses, and rounding people of color up? Thank goodness for the 2nd Amendment so my father can protect us from these evil people.

  2. Here at SDSU there is not one republican professor. Every single prof is a liberal. Hope this legislation helps the problem.

    1. This is demonstrably not true. Minority, yes, especially among the younger profs but there are conservative profs

      1. I don’t know, Rabbit may be correct. Several studies show that there are no registered Republicans on some major college campuses.

        1. I know several republican and/or conservative professors at SDSU. Unfortunately, they are all very close to retirement age and I suspect they will be replaced with professors with more leftist leanings.

          1. Graduated from SDSU in 2015 with a degree in ag business and accounting minor. most of my professors were republican or independent. I’m sure the amount of liberal professors depends on what you choose to study.

  3. Taxpayers are tired of funding liberalism on campus. If colleges don’t reform and let in some conservative voices there will be major consequences. The jig is up.

    1. I’m happy to fund a liberal, free thinking education. God forbid we provide an education that promotes questioning everything you’re taught.

Would love to actually discover the education levels of those posting here and where they went to school-

      1. I’m a college graduate. Received two BA’s from MSU.

I am concerned about what’s happening on college campuses. From young men being falsely accused of rape and/or sexual assault, the attempts to prohibit free speech and students being harassed for their beliefs, we’re hesitant to encourage our children to attend.

      2. I got my JD from the USE school of law, and I didn’t get twisted by the left-wing propaganda.

As anyone can tell, the left is not about tolerance of other viewpoints, so your whining cuts no ice. THEY want safe spaces, but they are more than happy to riot if they don’t like a nominee for the Supreme Court.

  4. Re first anonymous: you didnt really speak to the issue. You don’t agree with those groups, but would you ever oppose letting an avowed member of the KKK, for example, be given any sort of official presence speaking at one of our public universities?

    1. Free speech extends to those that we even disagree agree with- like some of the idiots who incessantly post on here. And what scares me even more- is that these idiots here are able to vote-

But that doesn’t mean I have to participate or watch the event such as a Klan rally take place.

Universities should be allowed to have a say in who or what is allowed on campus. If you don’t like it- go elsewhere or send your kid elsewhere. You have a choice- and I’m assuming most people here represent various spots on the political spectrum- Republicans champion choice unless it’s a woman’s reproductive health issue. So why are the Republicans shoving big government down an institutions throat?

South Dakota’s government has too much free time on their hands and they’re way over paid for the crap work they do. .

      1. Public universities don’t get to have a say in who is allowed to speak on campus, because they are public and the tax payers help fund them. They don’t get to pick and choose what speakers can and cannot come. Where do you get your information?

woman’s reproductive health issue… are you referring to unborn babies being torn limb from limb, their skulls crushed in and then sucked out of the womb? Asking for a friend.

        1. Yes they do- that’s why they have Presidents and administration to you know, run the university.

And yes- I was talking about abortion. If you don’t like abortion, don’t get one. If you don’t like abortion, I hope you’re adopting babies and children left and right. If you don’t like abortion, start teaching local children about safe sex- because heaven forbid we actually talk about condoms with students because abstinence doesn’t work.

Welcome to the 21st century where a middle schooler is likely more tech savvy than most people past 40. The old approaches aren’t working anymore-

      2. So you agree with the universities limiting who may speak on campus. And it figures you pull out the previous “right” to kill babies in the womb as an “example” of Republicans being against individual freedom.

        1. A terribly liberal coworker once asked me if I thought men should be allowed to speak on the issue of abortion.

My response… a woman thinking about abortion should first reflect on how she wants to kill her baby – either soak it in chemicals, burning it from the inside out or have a murderer tear baby’s limbs apart, suck it from the womb and then throw it out like trash.

We haven’t spoken much since then, the truth hurt her feelings, I guess.

          1. And then you know- you offered to adopt any child being possibly aborted right?

Does anyone support abortions in the case of rape, incest, or if the Mother’s life is endangered? If so- you support abortion. Stating that for a friend-

            1. I’m all for adding to a woman’s level of anxiety, depression and thoughts of suicide by supporting her right to dispose of her baby after she’s been raped. How thoughtless of @10:22 to consider an innocent life.

You forgot to ask if they also support sucking the life out of babies who may have down syndrome or another type of medical issue. Why allow a baby to be born when tests guarantee they’d only have a life filled with pain and misery?

              #shoutyourbaby’smurder

    2. Liberals call Trump a Xenophobe, so the liberal ability (or wllingness) to identify true hatred is not there. The true goal of the left is to stifle expression of viewpoints not their own, even if those viewpoints are not any kind of “phobic”.

  5. At least here at SDSU in humanities and social sciences there are no conservatives. Nada. Not sure about other departments

    1. There are a few in other disciplines. Many are afraid to speak out due to the bullying herd mentality. Look to the actual useful professions –engineering, other STEM disciplines, and also look to those with more life experience. Very few new hires in any discipline.

Note: Also me at 12:24 above

    1. Every college campus is a liberal echo chamber. Found this info from a Newsweek article…

The political affiliation of Ph.D.-holding faculty members at 51 of the 66 top-ranked liberal arts colleges according to U.S. News & World Report. Langbert finds that 39 percent of the colleges in his sample are Republican-free—with zero registered Republicans on their faculties.

As for Republicans within academic departments, 78 percent of those departments have no Republican members or so few as to make no difference.

Langbert breaks down the faculty Democrat-to-Republican ratio by academic department, and there are not many surprises.

Engineering departments have 1.6 Democrats for every Republican. Chemistry and economics departments have about 5.5 Democrats for every Republican. The situation is especially bad in anthropology departments, where the Democrat-to-Republican faculty ratio is 133-to-1, and in communications departments, where the ratio is 108-to-zero.

Langbert says, “I could not find a single Republican with an exclusive appointment to fields like gender studies, Africana studies, and peace studies.”

      1. As I said above. There’s a strong correlation between the usefulness of the degree and the number of republicans. I don’t think anybody wonders why that is true, and it is still unfortunate that we only get to 1.6:1 even in engineering.

If you ran the numbers with age and sex you’d probably see the disconnect mentioned above also.

          1. Hahaha, I’m smarter than a Republican because Anonymous 10:06pm says liberals are better educated and I’m a liberal.

        1. Education doesn’t always equate with intelligence, and it certainly doesn’t equate with morality.

  6. Enrollment is down at many SD state schools including the USD Law school. More students for the Minnesota University system and after they get out they can find jobs in their economy. All cool!

  7. Great scoop Pat! These documents are great. So glad legislators are reforming the universities. It’s time

  8. I got reading these documents. Very fun. Spent a couple of hours. The Regents ignore some questions. Hope legislators hold regents feet to the fire. The regents don’t deny there’s massive lack of intellectual diversity. They evade the question. Go Lee!!

  9. I can’t believe it’s taken this long to expose this scandal. 60% of South Dakotans are conservative and 99% of professors in South Dakota are liberal. Makes no sense. We need a purge.

    1. Ok, So South Dakota is one of the most Red states in the Union right now and all the sudden there is a threat at our Universities that they are supposedly liberal factories? What happens in Berkeley is coming to South Dakota University campuses? Seriously? What happened to the old Republican Party? The Republican Party in South Dakota is always focused on imaginary threats. Finding solutions to problems that do not exist.

      1. Wasn’t there a documentary that wasn’t allowed to be shown on USD? I’m not sure the details. During a speech by Anni Cyrus, she mentioned that Northern was the only campus that allowed her to come. The threats are real, you’re just scared to look at them.

        1. Northern did not invite Anni Cyrus and was not an official Northern sponsored event. A room was rented and renter made the advertisement look like NSU was and did not check with NSU for final approval which technically was a violation of the agreement and could of cancelled the event but chose not to.

“The threats are real, you’re just scared to look at them.”

No! If you believe we have Muslims living among us in South Dakota that have a secret agenda to behead us and impose Sharia Law you are in an extremely small minority.

No other public universities have permitted Anni Cyrus to speak on their campuses understandably.

          1. I didn’t say Northern invited her, someone did and Northern allowed her to speak, good on them. Are you afraid of what she has to say? You could go to an event and question her.

Where in the comment does it say anything about Muslims. Do you have a phobia of Muslims? The threat is Islam, not Muslims. Do you remember the Muslim man who had an arsenal in his vehicle sitting outside a Christian event? I do. Should I have been fearful of that Muslim?

There was an Imam who said Christine Ford should be required to follow Sharia Law and provide 3 witnesses to her rape. I understand some people don’t get out of their bubble, but we really can’t help them.

Am I suppose to believe the KKK is coming for me, a POC?

            1. Did you donate to her? She asks for donations constantly. Where is she donating to the causes she supposedly says she is? Where are the public records showing her expenses and administrative costs. A small number of grifters are traveling the country selling fear and scapegoating groups.

              1. Then you must also think David Hogg and his crew are grifters, traveling the country selling fear and scapegoating groups? Do you shame them too?

You get scared when a victim of rape shares their story and gives insight on how other people can protect themselves? I believe all victims, you don’t?

Cyrus lived a horrific life, in a country that gives women little to no rights. I’m happy she’s an Amer. citizen, able to enjoy the freedoms Amer. women, like me, cherish.

Public records are public, search for them. She helps organizations that rescue girls who are experiencing the same horrors she did. Why would you want to discriminate against her, preventing her from liberating women?

                1. We need to see where she is spending the money she is taking in on donations. Where it is spent and an audit by a 3rd party to make sure it is going to where she said it was going. United Way, Salvation Army are all rated with a breakdown of expenses. Let’s see hers. You are the one defending her and the other’s so you should provide the resources showing she is doing what she claims she is doing with the constant asking for money.

                  1. I don’t have to prove anything. It’s you who wants to stop a rape victim from sharing her experiences. You want to destroy her life, you’re on your own.

I want to see the public records showing exactly where David Hogg’s donations are going and you have to provide the evidence.

Wow, stupid is so real with you.

                    1. Don’t distract or deflect. If she says she has her own charity and is helping other victims than show proof as I mentioned above. Any reasonable person would ask that. That is Due Diligence. So evidently you did not take the time to verify before you donated money? If she was legit she would proudly promote exactly what she has done and also promote it has been checked and possibly rated by the appropriate entity.

                    2. She was wearing very expensive clothes and accessories when she was at Northern. It was noticed by a number of people.

        2. Yes there was a documentary called “the Honor Diaries that was banned at USD. I believe the faculty that organized the showing got pressure from the powers that be. Get you facts before you start name calling professors. I believe they put up quite a fight to have it shown. If I recall correctly, some are no longer employed be the University.

          1. Tara- you cant say something like “I believe” and then bitch about people not have facts. You rarely ever have facts and when you do they’re barely credible sources at best. I believe indicates you’re posting an opinion – and my liberal education taught me that facts, which can be proven (dissimilar to Alt-Facts), are not opinions.

Give yourself a break from posting links and scare tactics for awhile.

                1. No, lol…Cactus juice Jerry called a false alarm. They don’t have a problem contaminating the Lake with Copper and aluminum sulfade, but when I throw a non-toxic substance in the Lake…..all hell breaks loose. They would rather spend tens of millions than a few hundred thousand and have a clean lake.

  10. Liberals have a monopoly on thought on campus. If you deviate from it, you are undermined and fired if you are somehow able to sneak in and get hired in the first place. It’s an outrageous situation. Time to bust up the monopoly!!! Go Lee Qualm!!!

  11. Great job Lee! You have my vote. Our campuses are sewers of political correctness and anti-American hatred. Clean em up!!!

  12. A variety of viewpoints on campus? What a novel idea! Break the liberal monopoly people. Sail on brave Qualm. Godspeed.

  13. Congratulations Sir — this looks like a very serious effort at reform that is much needed. I’m going to circulate it among donors to these colleges that I know. They will strongly support these reforms.

  14. Anonymous above said: “Studies show that a more and better educated person tends to be more liberal.”

    Interesting.

So, liberals need to learn things taught to them by others and conservatives are both more intelligent and more motivated themselves to self-educate? I’m sorry to hear there are studies confirming liberals are lazy and like sheep. Besides an inherent intellectual defect, they also have a character defect. Do you think it is nature or nurture?

  15. South Dakota could lead the nation by making these reforms. I’m impressed with this work so far. Liberals sure seem afraid of losing their monopoly on campus.

  16. Liberals have been sucking on the public tit and taxpayers have been subsidizing liberalism for too long! Reform now! Taxpayers want more diverse thought on campus

    1. You know who else has been sucking on that tit and taxpayers fronting the bill? Illegal aliens.

Every year, American taxpayers are billed about $2.4 billion to pay for the births of illegal aliens, according to research by the Center for Immigration Studies Director of Research, Steven Camarotta.

    2. So we can end crop subsidies as well Vern?

Because liberal Californians, New Yorkers, Floridians, Minnesotans, and yes even South Dakotans are chipping in for that as well. Let’s not also forget the conservation programs that both liberals and conservatives alike also chip in for to help the South Dakota’s agricultural community.

  17. Here is the thing…..our public universities are not financial millstones around the neck of South Dakota taxpayers, but rather money machines for the state as a result of the profound imbalance between government support and money from student tuition. Universities are an ATM. That being said, campus numbers are down this year between 4-7% thanks to the perception that the White House is against foreign students (not Hispanics, but much needed Asian students). Now we throw in something like this in which we claim our universities are bastions of intolerance, hatred, and instability, and you have to ask yourself just how much is it worth to push away more students. Too bad Doc Farber isn’t around to offer some much needed advice on politicians leaving campuses alone so that the students can figure things out for themselves.

    1. This will be the perfect recruiting tool for other states such as Minnesota and those graduates will more then likely stay in Minnesota or go to other states where those high paying jobs are at and that does not include South Dakota. It further re-enforces the negative image South Dakota has.

It is interesting that these so called conservatives that complain about this garbage don’t realize the economic costs such as this and what happens with the wacky bills in the legislature. Will they themselves pay for the damage they have cost the state in dollars that they cost the majority of South Dakotans? Heck no!

  18. Your suggest writing regulations because of something that happened in California ? Are you running out of things to be against? How about giving examples of free speech suppression in S.D.? Try writing laws in support of something. That takes planning. Being against things takes no intellect at all.

  19. The BOR had a big problem with weasel liberals like Turman and the head lawyer and the director. They are gone. Reforms are coming. Liberals will no longer completely control what is said and taught on our campuses and that freaks them out. Liberals hate free speech. They want thought control.

  20. Both sides are to blame. It’s eay to blame Liberals, but they aren’t even in charge. Who appoints the Board of Regents?

  21. Here at usd professors are already meeting to plan to block any effort to promote intellectual diversity. That tells you all you need to know. I’d love to have some conservatives around here to keep things interesting. But liberals are in charge at usd and they will never yield power willingly

    1. You think you’re a funny clown, but all you’re doing is helping Republicans come Nov.

Don’t you need to be in class or studying? You should include ‘How to be an effective troll’ to your list of resources, you’re not very good at it.

  22. Conservative intellectual diversity.

You mean like Evolution is a hoax? Anti-Vax advocates? Climate Change is a hoax being manmade?

  23. This is the best idea legislators have had in years. Yes, get some conservative voices on campus! I love it. It would make liberal professors better too if they had someone who wasn’t just an echo of them

    1. It’s a group of students, sitting around in the library, thinking they are helping Democrats.
      I agree, good times.
