Board to make final call on Harney Peak renaming today

After an earlier bout of political correctness, the Board of Geographic Names is making the final decision on renaming Harney Peak today according to KELOLAND:

The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names is making its final recommendation on a proposed name change for Harney Peak in the Black Hills National Forest.
The board is expected to make its final recommendation on Monday at a meeting in Pierre at 1:30 p.m.
The board made a preliminary recommendation in May to change the name to name “Hinhan Kaga.” It’s believed that the phrase translates to “Making of Owls” in English.

Read it all here.

Anyone taking bets after the outrage over their preliminary recommendation?

  1. yes, it will be something ridiculous that few can pronounce and even fewer will know or comprehend the meaning.

  2. PC run amok once again. It is and will always be Harney Peak. Can you imagine saying, “We are going to climb Hinhan Kaga”??! But then again, common sense seems to be sadly misplaced these days.

  3. When will the Sioux undersand that they lost the “Indian Wars”..

All vestiges of their slave-owning, innocents killing, repressive Sioux culture should be scrubbed from public places.

Take their “prayer flags” and pow wows and war banners and other repressive symbols to a museum where they belong.

Rename Harney peak with a Lakota name? Huh? We need to be moving FORWARD not backwards!

Get over it my Sioux brothers & sisters–the war is over! They LOST!! MOVE ON! It’s 2015!

  4. If we have to change it, can we at least keep it in English or Spanish? Posterity is not likely to even know what it means since only 5% of Lakota children speak their native tongue. It is highly questionable that Lakota will ever be spoken in the 22nd century by anyone.

  5. All of the time & money spent on feel good , symbolic issues like Shannon County , Reynolds Prairie & Harney Peak seems to be such a waste of effort & resources that could be directed towards youth suicide & economic development . Maybe they do not want to break the poverty cycle ,the oppressive reservation system or meet the drug & abuse issues head on . Perhaps those in power want to keep their people under their thumb . The elders & true warriors need to step up & create change .

  6. Personally, I think Black Elk would be a great name for the highest point in SD. He is a person who is respected in both white and Indian cultures. The peak is part of or near the Black Elk Wilderness area. And, Harney has negligible if any connection to South Dakota.

  7. Greece is imploding financially, Puerto Rico is ready to go bottoms up (well they have already), the Middle East is Hell on Earth, the U.S. is hemorraging debt and some of our Native Americans are worried about what we call a mountain peak causing it to somehow be of importance.
Mike Verchio with all due respect to those who do care about the big picture you nailed it Sir.
