Campus Reform: SDBOR concedes point on intellectual diversity

Campus Reform is reporting thatthe South Dakota State Board of Regents adopting policies surrounding free speech and intellectual diversity following a year of pressure from conservative lawmakers, before lawmakers took it upon themselves to handle the problem:

The Board of Regents passed a policy encouraging freedom of expression on campus and “intellectual diversity in faculty,” referring to faculty’s political views.

“Freedom of expression includes the right to discuss and present scholarly opinions and conclusions on all matters both in and outside the classroom without Board or institutional discipline or restraint,” states a portion of the policy.

and..

According to documents obtained by Campus Reform, South Dakota state Sen. Jim Stalzer and state Rep. Sue Peterson, both Republicans, wrote that they “are also concerned with reports that university faculties are already organizing against any attempts to promote intellectual diversity.”

The two also asked the Board of Regents why colleges cannot make “intellectual diversity hires,” as they currently make “diversity hires,” referring to the lack of political diversity on college campuses.

  1. Legislators better not stop now. They need to pass laws to force the colleges to implement this. Otherwise the college libs will ignore it.

    1. Why do you turn liberal into a naughty word? Can you give me an example of your wacko prof!

      1. The liberals themselves turned it into a derogatory term by being Socialist, anti-American people. They have also co-opted the name “Progressive”. As C.S. Lewis said, progressive is to move forward to better ideas and backtracking if you inadvertently go down the wrong road. The liberals today are moving forward down a terrible path. I don’t know that V4 needs to give names; he/she attends a public university, so naturally the vast majority of profs are going to be left-wingers.

    2. Have you considered transferring to a private institution to get an education from similarly minded professors?

I heard Liberty University might suffice-

  2. You would be shocked at all the crazy liberal things my professors at USD say. And everyone is afraid to say anything because they just want their “B” and want to get out of there. Hope these people can fix this.

      1. I wish it were crazy, but we will all get to experience the downfall of mankind soon enough. Earth will survive but humans will not.

      2. Yeah, no agenda there; I’m sure it’s all pure fact and no theories whatsoever. Boy, talk about gullible.

  3. there should be as many conservative professors on campus as liberals. more, in fact, because south dakota is very conservative

      1. If you are basing that solely on levels of Degrees attained then sure you would be correct. But to suggest that someone with a PhD in Inter-sectional Women’s Studies is some how “more educated” than a tech school graduate (or high school graduate for that matter) is laughable.

      2. Liberals tend to have lower moral standards and are bigger hypocrites than conservatives. They also tend to be less responsible for themselves, hence the call for the government to expand to take care of them.

      1. Uh, no; it is because of a corrupt system designed to push the liberal (oh, that naughty word again!) agenda. University profs are not any more special than anyone else, and if they stink at their jobs they should be fired.

        1. Fire all the IVEY League professors……and don’t send your kids there because heaven forbid, the are liberal.

  4. This exposes the intellectual dishonesty of liberals.

They extolled racial and cultural diversity under the guise of getting diverse perspectives. When faced with the evidence there is uniform perspective (their liberal perspective) they cry foul.

Scrap all concept of diversity and hire on merit.

    1. It also exposes the hypocrisy of conservatives who now support not hiring based on merit to make faculty fit their political ideology.

      1. I don’t think that’s the conservative viewpoint.

The conservative demand is for “intellectual DIVERSITY”, not one-sided.

  5. A conservative purity test for academics is a must, and a panel must be established that oversees curriculum and ensures that core American values are taught. Colleges should be a factory for future Patriots, not a bunch of wacko liberals.

    1. I have no idea what you guys are talking about. It was 2 college faculty that fought to show the “Honor Diaries”. Who was the person that said no. Get to the point instead of name calling.

    1. The increasing need for the fulfillment of trade jobs and the stagnant pay for college education grads is the driving force….not this. Why pay 150k+ for an education to work for 40k a year when you can learn on the job and make 6 figures within 10 years?

  6. The colleges are funded by taxpayer dollars. It’s time for colleges to be responsive to taxpayers and taxpayers want a variety of viewpoints on campus. Colleges aren’t funded to be the playground of liberals and controlled by liberals.

    1. How are the colleges the playground for liberals…..you don’t solve problems by blaming the minorities who hold zero power. I thought the Republicans have been in power for over 40 years. You maybe should be pointing the fingure of the people who are in charge. Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me.

  7. So now Republicans support hiring people just because they lean a certain political way? Funny how their position changes from hiring the best person to hiring someone who may be less qualified but holds conservative beliefs. I guess they do support affirmative action now. Falling enrollment has nothing to do with the beliefs of faculty. That may be the dumbest thing I read all year.

    1. If you need a neuro surgen, would you want the world renoun Mayo liberal or the Conservative rookie operating on you. Since when does political affilation have anything to do with top notch professors?

    1. CX……..you make no sense at all. The cream of the crop top professors are probably 90% liberal.
