Noem, Oglala Sioux Tribe Sign Fuel Tax Agreement

PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Kristi Noem and Oglala Sioux Tribe President Julian R. Bear Runner, along with the Department of Revenue and Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg, last week signed a five-year fuel tax excise agreement between the State of South Dakota and the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

“It is in the public interest that the Tribe and the State seek to develop a fair and workable administration of certain tribal taxes and state taxes,” the agreement states. “The Tribe and the State have engaged in good faith negotiations in a spirit of cooperation and have voluntarily reached this agreement.”

The agreement renews a prior contract with the Oglala Sioux Tribe authorizing the State to collect all fuel taxes on behalf of the Tribe. The State then remits back to the Tribe the fuel excise tax collected on tribal members who purchase gas within their reservation boundary.
