Thune names Josh Shields as manager for his 2016 re-election bid

From Jon Ellis at the Argus Leader, US Senator John Thune has announced that he’s picked his next campaign manager, and it’s someone well known in Republican circles here in South Dakota – Josh Shields.

Sen. John Thune has taken a major step toward running for a third term by hiring a veteran campaign operative to manage his 2016 campaign.

Joshua Shields has taken the top job, which he started Monday. Thune has yet to officially announce a third term, but it’s really only a matter of time before that happens.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to have Joshua back on my team to manage the re-election campaign,” Thune said in a statement. “Joshua knows South Dakota, he knows how to organize and he knows how to win.”

and…

His crowning victory came in 2010, when he managed Kristi Noem’s campaign to victory over incumbent Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin. He then joined Noem’s staff for a brief period before leaving politics to return to Rapid City, where he worked with Black Hills Corp.

Big congratulations to Josh in his new position running the Thune campaign effort.

(Of course, that’s assuming Democrats manage to find an opponent.)

  1. I can’t imagine Josh would leave Black Hills Corporation to run John Thune’s campaign against no one.

    1. Why not? He gets to add successful Senate campaign to his resume to go along with successful House Campaign.

  2. You still find anything the Arduous – Leader publishes worthy of a story? Really?

  3. Congratulations to Josh! Glad to see Thune is taking 2016 seriously and nabbing a manager that not only knows him but knows what it takes to beat legitimate democrat candidates in SD.

    1. “Legitimate Democrat candidates in SD,” And that would be?
I don’t claim to be all knowing concerning the political landscape in our great state; but, I don’t see a legitimate Democrat candidate even swinging a bat in the on deck circle. I don’t want to sound over confident, but other than SHS who is there?

  4. Whatever happened to all the chatter on this blog of Thune “surely” going to hire Glodt and Rollins to manage race?

    1. Who ever said that? They’re good guys, but they’ve always been associated with Rounds and Daugaard.

    1. Glodt and Rollins are obviously good enough to make the armchair quarterbacks envious.

  5. Of all mentioned above, Shields was hands down the best choice. Good for him and for Thune.

  6. Definitely a great choice. Josh is one of the top political talents in the state.

Speaking of which, has DWC considered doing another 40 under 40 list of SD GOP politicos? With the next big race being the 2018 Governor’s race we’re likely to see a new generation of people running those campaigns. Would be great to see who some of those folks are. Shields would obviously be high on that list, along with Rollins, Kelsey Webb, Andrew Christianson, Tony V, etc.
