Lake & Gosch in D23 House

This has been an incredibly tight race, which you might chalk up to support from the Home in areas. John Lake had a strong showing in Potter and Faulk counties, Gosch in Walworth & McPherson, Werner had Campbell, Edmunds & Faulk, and so on.

All things being equal, with all candidates putting forth a good effort, I think this more with the counties that identified with their most local candidate, and simply some of those counties had far more population than others.

OK. Fess up. Who did you vote for?

I cast my ballot in Brookings early this AM for myself for Precinct Committeeman, and for Larry Tidemann for State Senate. Primarily because I want to retain the seat for the GOP in the fall, since Brookings is the biggest swing county in the state.

How about you all? Upon whom did your electoral favors fall today?

Governor Names Mike Jaspers Secretary Of Agriculture

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today that he has appointed Mike Jaspers of rural Minnehaha County to serve as South Dakota’s Secretary of Agriculture. Jaspers will begin July 5, 2016.

“I am very excited to have Mike serve as ag secretary,” Gov. Daugaard said. “His background in agriculture production, policy and administration makes him a great fit to lead the department.”

“I am honored that Gov. Daugaard has given me this opportunity,” Jaspers said. “I look forward to working with the men and women who make agriculture our state’s No. 1 industry.”

A native of northeast South Dakota, Jaspers operates a diversified crop and livestock farm in McCook, Hutchinson and Marshall counties. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanized Agriculture from South Dakota State University in 1993.

In addition to operating his farm and holding management positions in several agricultural businesses, Jaspers served in the South Dakota State Legislature from 1997-2005. In 2007, President George W. Bush appointed him state director of USDA-Rural Development, where he served until June 2008.

Jaspers currently serves as vice chairman of the board for Sioux Falls Catholic Schools and is a graduate of the South Dakota Agriculture and Rural Leadership (SDARL) program. He and his wife, Robin, have two children.

Editor’s note – Unexpected, but not unwelcome at all. Mike’s a good guy. -pp

A new telephone message that’s going out in District 19 from Governor Daugaard.

And my requests for an update on the things that were coming are answered. This is what is coming in D19, and I’d bet Stace Nelson doesn’t have one of these.

Governor Dennis Daugaard is sending this message out on his own dime, and encouraging people to go out and vote in District 19 for Caleb Finck, as he evokes memories of the positive leadership the District had under Ed and Bill Van Gerpen as well as Jim Putnam.

As I understand, while the Governor has general spots encouraging people to vote, this is the only one that he’s specifically doing for a Legislative candidate.

It’s a nice spot, for a deserving candidate.
